cork's face of greed 2009/2010
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Newly elected Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Dara Murphy is now Cork's official face of Greed for 2009/2010.
Whilst the City Council has been letting go of temporary workers, cllr Murphy will be drawing his € 103,000 salary plus car and driver and expenses allowance of €50,000 +. This is for a position which is mainly ceremonial.
To go with his exagerated sense of self -importance, Cllr Murphy says that amongst his priorities will be a debt free Cork Airport and the development of a Municipal stadium.
Now Cllr Murphy hasn't said who exactly is going to be paying for the airport's debts, but in view of the current recession, we can be fairly sure the governement wont be offering to pay and we can be equally sure that if Enda Kenny succeeded to government that he wont be in a hurry to assume the debt either.
However the important thing here is that the powerless Lord Mayor needs to feed his ego and how better to do this can implying that he can wipe out over €100 million of debt.
Similiarly the talk of a Municipal stadium is an example of a deluded politican tilting at windmills. The GAA, rugby and soccer all have their own stadiums all fine grounds, so who is it that will be using and more importantly paying for this municipal stadium ?
Well Cllr Murphy will only be in office for 12 months and so from his point of view, paying for it is not his problem.
How is the behavior of narcissitic politicians like Cllr Murphy going to convince the public that FG is anyway different than FF ?

That salary is a joke, I read before its more than the Spanish President/PM cant remember which.
The title alone is a joke, "Lord" may as well fly the Union Jack on City Hall while we're at it!

I brought it up with Fine Gael when they knocked on my door and how the lord mayor got a 4 grand raise last year and how it rotates between Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Labour.......the answer I got is that it is how it is done in England.......well then fuck off there ye muppets!

what do you expect look getting into the City Hall is a goldmine, ask KATHLEEN LYNCH, LORRAINE KINGSTON, CATHERINE CLANCY AND KIERAN LYNCH. All these people are related through marriage. Its a mafia in the making. Two are now in the Dail and mark my words the other two will follow. And how many of their family have they employed.

The serious question for FG is why should anyone believe that they are going to be any different than FF if they do not start to address abuses such as this one ?

Have you ever been to Pairc Ui Chaoimh? That is a death trap. Fine ground me arse!!
Not defending the Lord Mayor here (or his salary) but I think the point he is making with regard to a municipal stadium is that the GAA are trying to get hold of council land to re-develop PUC and build a modern stadium.
However, there wish is that it will be used exclusively for GAA and other sports will be excluded.
If that were to happen it would be a clamity for the city. We would then have a 50 or 60 thousand seater stadium fill once every 2 years for a home Munster Final.
Sure, the soccer and rugby heads have there own grounds but these are small stadiums and incapable of holding internationals. Why shouldn't the city of Cork have a municiple stadium that could hold rugby and soccer internationals as well as International rules match along with big GAA games.
I am no supporter of Fine Gael but I certainly back the Lord Mayor in his effort to prevent Frank Murphy building a 60,000 seater folly to his own vanity.

If the GAA want to finance the development of thier own ground, then from my point of view, they are entitled to.
To be honest the people who support the league games for soccer and rugby are fairly small, I have attend local games in both games often. I dont see the point of taking on huge financing projects to facilitate sunshine followers who want To go to Internationals.
The last time I saw an Irish under 21 or 19(cant remember which) international at Turners Cross, the size of the crowd was pitiful.

If I were Chris, do you suppose I would be able to divide 4,200,000 by 8 and come up with the right answer ?
Or like the good Boyler himself, would I screw it up ?

the announcement of the clousure of Odlums mills, just over the road from the City hall and the job losses in Smurfitt Kappa, just underline the greed of FG's Lord mayor.
has this man and his colleagues any sense of shame at all ?
The count down is on for FG tio begin cutting out his type of greed or they will face a revolt from the electorate at the general election.
If they are not like FF/Greens, they actually need to prove it !

I am like the Israelites of old wandering around in the dessert looking for the promised land.
I thought I had found it in the Greens but it turned out to be just a golden fatted calf !
I guess unless FG start some decent reforms then I will have to keep wandering.

The publication of the Bord Snip Report makes FG's position on this salary package even more unacceptable.
To use Lucinda Creighton's words " This is outrageous !"
