View Full Version : Foreign nationals account for 20% claiming dole
FOREIGN nationals account for one in five of the people claiming the dole, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office.
In May 2009, there were 396,871 on the unadjusted live register, up 96.7% from the 195,115 recording in the same month last year. As reported earlier in the week, the adjusted Live Register figure taking into account seasonal working was more than 402,000.
Every corner of the country has seen massive increases over the year to the end of May. In Dublin, the number on the register has risen from 47,859 to 95,184, an increase of 99%. There has been the same percentage increase in Limerick where the number claiming the dole has risen from 9,911 to 19,810.
In Cork, the increase is 104% from 19,552 to 39,941. In Waterford, the increase is slightly less marked, from 7,979 to 13,661, or 71%.
Foreign nationals on the live register increased by 45,798 to 79,077 over the course of the year. The majority are from the EU accession states.
Yesterday staffing agency Manpower released the results of a survey which found 13% of Irish employers expect to reduce staff numbers between July and September this year. It had asked 634 Irish employers whether they intended to increase or decrease their workforces over the next three months. It said the country’s Net Employment Outlook for the period was -11%, the weakest hiring forecast globally.
Krissie Davies, managing director of Manpower Ireland, said: "The pace of workforce reductions appears to have peaked in Q1 and Q2 of this year. While the Irish labour market is predicted to continue to weaken with 13% of Irish employers envisaging letting staff go, there is finally some evidence, albeit tentative, to suggest that the rate of deterioration may be easing.

And they are all dead right, Pole.
They were BEGGED to come to Ireland to serve you drink and to clean your piss off the toilet bowl.
They are entitled to claim the dole as much as any Irish person - and in some cases more so.
Fire in the hole, big boy!!
fuck them all out and we'll save 4 billion a year

You seem to be rattled here, pole.
You voted for FF who invited all of the foreign nationals to come to work in Ireland - the government actively recruited people from the ascension states- to keep the celtic tiger alive and bobbing and weaving from reality.
And you continue to be a FF man.
Do you see the irony, pole?
No?
I didn't think so.
Irish nationals only make up 80% of unemployed.
POL thinks this isn't enough!

Most foreign nationals were here working for minimun wage and as a result never paid any tax on that wage. Most of the money that they made was sent home or saved for when they went home.
Now those jobs are gone and they can all clame dole for as long as they want, as long as they have been working here for 2 years.
So 2 years working here on minimun wage entitles a foreign national to remain here on the dole for life.
Their net contribution to the economy is a negative.
The dole here is better that the weekly wage in their home countries.
They took our jobs, they took our women, and now they take our dole, why should I be paying for keeping these scroungers?

They can have the dole even if only for the trauma of taking the women.
They have suffered enough.
Most foreign nationals were here working for minimun wage and as a result never paid any tax on that wage. Most of the money that they made was sent home or saved for when they went home.
But they paid social insurance, which is where dole comes from.
As for tax, they probably paid plenty of VAT.
So 2 years working here on minimun wage entitles a foreign national to remain here on the dole for life.
No
They still have to obey the rules about applying for jobs while they're on the dole.
In the meantime, you may want to consider that the number of accession state nationals claiming the dole went down from 44,727 to 44,640. Seeing that they accounted for about a thousand of last month's job losses, that means a good portion of those laid off have decided to return home. The others are more than likely looking for work here. They came here to get jobs and are unlikely to be happy just sitting around doing nothing.
obey the rules about applying for jobs while they're on the dole.
.what fucking jobs?????

and the cost of living here is also way higher than their home countries, so it kind of cancels out...
of course the idea that they might actually want to make a living from anything other than the dole is ridiculous right? God forbid that ireland would find itself a poor country and have mass emigration... oh wait, that has been the case for most of our history as a state, and seems to be quickly becoming the case again now...
I wonder what Canada and Australia think of all these Irish immigrants arriving?...

Its the Romanian Gypsies bother me, they claim the dole in Ireland and in England. They get massive childrens allowance, their rent is paid. I know of one young girl who is 14 and expecting a child, they shout and roar to get their own way, they never seem to understand the English language( this suits them). They are cleaning up with every scheme in the book.

I think I might go claim the dole in Ireland then.
I wonder what percentage of those are from the UK? If I was living in the North, I'd seriously consider having a go off claiming the dole in the republic, the difference is huge.

The Dept of Social Welfare have launched a huge campaign in the border counties against people crossing the border claiming our dole, when it is 80£ and the Irish equivalent is E204.

He put fact in capitals after his statement. Surely this is good enough?
Tis far from verifiable sources you were reared.
17,315 UK citizens on the dole.
However, that doesn't prove much about cross-border claiming as I'd say people who do that are more likely to say they're Irish (and they're entitled to do so).
What's noticeable with UK claimants is that they've always formed pretty much the same percentage of all claimants (between 4% and 5%). This implies that many are long-term residents who had long-term jobs and who are as likely as native Irish to be affected by unemployment.
EU-15 has remained fairly constant at 1%
Accession States have gone from 4% to 11%
Non-EU has gone down from 4% to 3%
(All figures compared to May 2007, the earliest figures given)

Being able to say you're Irish isn't enough though, you have to prove you're a resident. British are the largest immigrant group in this country and, unlike those from accession states, can claim dole the minute they step off the boat.

My point is about people from Armagh who are claiming in Monaghan etc.
They would undoubtedly register as Irish because they are Irish. Mostly they'd give the address of some relative who lived just across the border too. The practice is quite common and wouldn't be picked up by just looking at the raw numbers of UK citizens.
I can't find the article, but I remember reading about one town in Monaghan that had more people claiming the dole that there were in the 18-65 age group at the last census.

Because Fianna Fail like to do things backwards, increase spending and lower taxation to unsustainable levels during a boom period (causing a mini-recession in 2003 in the process), and cut cut cut and tax tax tax when the economy's deflating.

Does this mean crime in Cork went up 400% in the last few years? Or did crime by Cork people go down by 80% and Eastern Europeans then comit a huge amount of crime per head to make up the difference .
People seem to forget that the majority of the Eastern Europens aren't lazy knacker Irish. They won't be happy sitting on their fat arses for the rest of their lives after quitting school early cause they were too dumb. Sitting around hoping their daughters will get pregnant soon so they can also get a house off the council. Instead of cutting off the dole for people who actually worked here why don't we cut the dole off anyone who spend more than a year on the dole during the tiger years. Thieving scum living off handouts and will never contribute anything to society bar another generation of scummy criminals.
