Just wondering as i was asked a question the other night. If you do not use your vote, does it go to the party currently in government??:confuse d:

No.
It just means that the turnout will be lower.
You should always use your vote though. But if you don't, it just means that it remains unused, and your opinion isn't taken into account.

Thanking you sir, oh i will be using it. Was more curious than anything.
In all political circles in Ireland, it lowers the electorate. There are some occasions where in companies or sports clubs where if a member doesn't vote the chairman decided how to use it, but not in public elections.
In some countries in referenda, not voting is taken as voting against a proposal, but again that doesn't apply in Ireland.
I've never heard of any country where not voting implies a vote for the government.

In theory the answer is No but personation has happened in the past - where somone working for a candidate or party votes in someone else's name - they usually pick places where there is a traditionally low vote or use the votes of people who died recently and are still on the register or who are away on holiday. If you want to punish the present government not voting is not an option. They thrive on it because Fianna Fáil'ers always come out to vote.
