elsoms back of to Oz

Rocky Elsom, Leinster's back-row forward Heineken Cup winning hero, has decided to return to Australia to resume his career with the Wallabies.

Leinster were desperate to keep Elsom but the lure of adding to his 58 Wallaby caps persuaded him to conclude his one-year stay in Europe.

"I already liked Dublin before playing for Leinster and obviously I enjoyed the rugby," said the 26-year-old.

"But ultimately I'm Australian and want to play for Australia," he added.

"You don't always have the opportunity to do that but I do now so I want to take advantage of it.

"My contract with Leinster is over so I'm going to try and head back to Australia.

"I want to play for a Super 14 team because my first priority has always been the Wallabies. That's what I want to do."

Elsom's bulldozing runs and ferocious tackling proved instrumental in the Irish province's Heineken Cup success but he has remained in regular contact with the Australian Rugby Union.

"I've really enjoyed this season and I didn't expect to like it as much.

"I've spoken at length with the Australian management about moving back, it's not something I've only just decided to do.

"It's just about finalising things now."

Leinster skipper Brian O'Driscoll went as far as to state that the province would not have won the competition without Elsom.

Such a formidable presence will be impossible to replace and his decision to decline taking a one-year option on his contract is a huge blow to the European champions.

Elsom is being tipped to join the ACT Brumbies although Queensland and his former club New South Wales also want his services

Yeah, what a player and what loss to Leinster. Don't think ever genuinely planned on staying more than a year though.

Looking forward to seeing him play for the Barbarians on Saturday. Though it is clashing with the Super 14 final ... Decisions ...

Not saying he's anywhere near the player Elsom is, but Sean O'Brien does look like a tasty prospect.

Thing bout Sean O'Brien now is that people will be looking for him to fill Elsom's boots when he's a totally different player. He is an awesome talent and this season it could be said that he possibly warranted more game time.

Sexton isnt the real deal yet so cover at out half along with a number 8 is a priority, Reddan should get the most out of the backline alot more that 3 step Whitaker did.

Aye, what an absolute gem of a signing for Leinster when you consider some of the guys who will have been before him, Whitaker, Easterby... I'm actually surprised they didn't go in for Boss.

I know, it's the best Barbarians team I've seen in a long time. If they click they'll absolutely murder England.

Must check the handicap betting actually...

Big, big loss to Leinster. He was the biggest factor in winning the cup, they certainly wouldn't have beaten Harlequins without him and Sexton would have had a far bumpier ride against Munster if he had not been hammering Munster at the breakdown.

I think Sexton is close to being the real deal. The series of matches over the summer will make or break him, IMO. Hope they make him, O'Gara has another 3-4 years left, at most. Thankfully, O'Gara plays in a way that means he'll still be as effective in his mid-30s, but who wants to risk it?

He made the most of his time in Ireland, wish him well for the future. Leinster aren't completely fawked, they still have a good pack that will stand up to most teams.

Ulster are far more fawked, having lost Solomons. They're going to struggle to get another coach of the same standard and there isn't much by way of Irish coaching talent out there. Bradley definitely isn't the answer, Galway is a novice, as is Davidson. Willie Anderson, while a good option has "issues".

Might be a silly suggestion, but Clive Woodward can't be up to much, following his experience at Southampton. He'd certainly get them organised and at least stop stupid shit like redeveloping Ulster's small ground to reduce its capacity...

You got that right, what happens when wallace and quinlan are not around to hold his hand

Is that a fitz?

Probably not.

My mind is in 2003. My body is in 2015.

He had a disaster in the Churchill Cup last summer so should be interesting to see this tournment now.

Theres some serious talent coming through for Ireland. A championship in the next 2 years is the only measure of success.

Cave
Earls. Lions tour could be too soon. Still don't rate him under a high ball.
Healy
Sean O'Brien. Awful hands though
Ronan
Sexton. Really only 2 good games after a lot of average enough performances the last 2 years but he has talent and hopefully will develop.

And then the guys who've broke through in the last year
Fitzgearld
Heaslip
Kearney
