Ronaldo blames tactics for Rome reversal
Cristiano Ronaldo felt Manchester United's tactics were 'not good' during the club's 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in the final of the Champions League.
United set out at the Stadio Olimpico with the same formation which overcame Arsenal in the semi-finals, with Ryan Giggs replacing the suspended Darren Fletcher.
However, after a positive start, the Premier League champions failed to recover from conceding a 10th minute Samuel Eto'o goal and were outplayed for the remainder of the game.
Alex Ferguson altered his tactics at half-time by bringing on Carlos Tevez for Anderson, but the change failed to improve United's performance.
Ronaldo started the match up front before moving out to the wing and the Portuguese ace felt 'everything went wrong'.
"I cannot explain. We, the players, were not well, the tactics were not good... everything went wrong.
"We have to give credit to Barcelona, but they were a bit lucky to be here because Chelsea did not deserve to lose and no-one has mentioned that.
"I have to congratulate Barcelona, they were better, but football is just like this: only the winners get talked about."
The former Sporting Lisbon man also refused to comment on his future amid fresh reports linking Real Madrid with a renewed interest in his services.
He added: "My future now is the national squad, so that we can win, so that we can be in a good position in our qualifying group.
"About clubs, I do not want to talk about that, I want to rest, go on holiday, I am very tired, I have played a lot of games, a lot of pressure.

Man Utd fan kills four in Nigeria
A Manchester United fan in Nigeria killed four people when he drove his minibus into a crowd of Barcelona supporters after his team lost the Champions League final, police said today.
The crowd in the town of Ogbo were celebrating Barcelona's victory after last night's match when the bus drove into them. A police spokeswoman said 10 people were injured and the driver was arrested.
"The driver had passed the crowd then made a U-turn and ran into them," she said.
Barcelona beat Manchester United 2-0 in what was hailed as a "dream final" between two of Europe's best clubs. Both teams have large fan bases in Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.

To be fair, setting aside the hype, retaining the CL would be a hell of an achievement. A lot of very fine teams have failed to do so, which suggests that it's harder to retain it then back in the Champion's Cup days.

Which is why I don't mind sentences such as "the first to retain the Cup in the Champions League era". There's a subtle difference. The far more prevalent former makes it sound like it's never been done, ever.

Anyone who says first team to retain the Champions Cup or European Cup is basically a bit slow
everyone knows loads of teams have retained it many times when it was the trophy that only Champions could enter
I haven't heard this phrase once
Most who have mentioned it will have supplemented it with a phrase such as "in the modern era"
It is a credit to the modern day version that no team has retained it though

No? "First team to retain the Champions League" has been pretty much a constant on the BBC news channels and ITV over the past few days. I even heard "first team to retain the trophy" a few times.
Anyway, I realise all this "football began in 1992" stuff has been done to death on here, so I'll say no more about it.

Anyone who says (first to retain) Champions Cup or European Cup is pretty stupid though
But it is the same thing ultimately and it all counts as the one trophy
That's why teams like Barca and United have to catch up on the top tier

"The first team to retain the Champions league" phrase is a fact
It's a misnomer, though. "First team to retain the trophy in the Champions League era" would be far more accurate, but isn't said as often.
(If I wanted to stir, I'd compare it to a hypothetical situation where the GAA rebranded the All-Irelands after the back door was introduced, leading to claims that teams like Limerick had never won the 'Special Irelandy Hurling Trophy'. It'd be technically accurate, like. I don't want to stir, though, so I won't.)

Well he is no Liam Brady, that's for sure
But there is a begrudgery of "fancy-dan" players such as Ronaldo and Ronaldinho
These are players, who like it or not, bring entertainment and the likes of Giles often refers to the amount of cash they make, which in my opinion is irrelevant as long as they do it on the pitch (in his era, Garrincha, Best and more were like that)
When they don't fair enough (last night for example)
The whole "people think football began in 1992" argument is out of order too (or i must be reading the wrong papers)
any cursory look at the papers or tv recently will have told people that Man United finally equalled Liverpools amazing title haul of 18
They are still behind (well behind in European Cups) and anyone who argues otherwise is deluded

His Leeds teams were dirty hackers and as good as he was he never won much, despite playing in good teams
The likes of Dunphy worship at his altar but his playing career (and indeed management career) could have been much better
It is much easier to sit in the studio and criticise players who he claims are over-rated
But was he a little over-rated himself?
PS-he is still a good enough pundit, far superior to anyone on Sky or BBC
