Absolutely not. Do you know what they think of us "Free Staters" down here.
Besides, Poland are only 3 points behind with a game in hand, with that lot to play at home. The second placed tram are only a point behind with two games in hand.
Hopefully they won't be polluting South Africa with their own special brand of loathing and bigotry.

And a few years ago:
Driven out by hate
http://news.bbc.co.uk/media/images/38211000/jpg/_38211563_lennonin.j pg Lennon bows out of international football
Why the Celtic footballer Neil Lennon failed to turn out to captain Northern Ireland, his national side, against Cyprus last night, and why he says he will never play for his country again, seems as much about perception as reality.
He's a Catholic playing for a club team traditionally supported by Catholics. A call threatening he would be killed if he played for Northern Ireland -- traditionally supported by Protestants -- was received by the switchboard at BBC Belfast from someone purporting to come from the Loyalist paramilitary group, the LVF.
But such threats are usually only taken seriously when they are accompanied by a recognised code word. This call wasn't like that, but police nevertheless decided to advise Mr. Lennon to consider his safety. The LVF this morning said the threat was a hoax.
Neil Lennon has had plenty of experience facing up to sectarian football crowds. When he joined Celtic eighteen-months ago he was booed by the Northern Ireland crowd. In a newspaper interview then he called for an end to religious divisiveness in football and what in the context of Ulster politics was a brave suggestion -- the creation of an all-Ireland team. After Wednesday's death threat, he told reporters he decided enough was enough.
Neil Lennon's decision is immensely important to Northern Ireland's political future - the Northern Ireland minister Jane Kennedy told us that it was shameful that such a fine player was driven out of the game by "sectarian bigots"

Is it even possible that FIFA would allow it anyway even if the will to do it was strong? I mean they are a completely different nation. I couldn't see Haiti and the Dominican Rebuplic being allowed to do it for instance. Wouldn't the island have to be politically unified as one country before FIFA could recognise it?

I just put down the AIL bit, and it occurred and AI team would surely have to follow- in terms of FIFA, at least.
Neither domestic league look viable at present, so a union will have to come about there at any rate.

British isles are a special entity within FIFA though.I would have thought that E, S, W & NI would fall under that and could amalgamate as a British team at the drop of a hat. Not us though, we are a Republic afterall.

Heh heh heh... just that, as the home of the football, the Yookay has historically been allowed a fair degree of latitude within FIFA on its perverse course of having 4 home associations.
It's hardly a leap of logic, and might well be foisted upon us should our leagues amalgamate.

Getting back to the original question ...no i hope they dont qualify.
I remember in 1990 when an RTE reporter went into the IFA social club on the shankill road and asked a guy sitting there if he hoped Ireland would beat Holland that night . His bitterness was there for all to see and he couldnt let politics out of it...he said
" being this 1990 ..the 300th anniversary of the battle of the Boyne it would be nice to see the team in Orange win "
I mean how fucking retarded is that .

I think its unfair of FIFA to ask Ireland to field two sides. Granted, the regional representative side did well at the weekend and again last night, but some of those lads deserve a call up to the senior squad who travelled to play against Italy.

Going on this:
The nine group-winners will qualify directly, while the best eight of the nine second-placed teams will contest home and away play-off matches for the remaining four places.[5] In determining the best eight second-placed teams, the results against teams finishing last in the six-team groups will not be counted for consistency between the five- and six-team groups.
if there anybody out there bored enough to work out how those 8 second place teams are working out at the moment?
1 Hungary 13
8 Republic of Ireland 12
7 France 10
5 Bosnia and Herzegovina 9
4 Russia 9
3 Slovakia 9
2 Switzerland 7
9 Scotland 7
6 Croatia 4

Success generally means that the scumbag element gets diluted, so that's reason enough to wish them well. Even if it is a byproduct of bandwagoneering.
Anyway, from what I've seen (and, granted, there are probably people here with more direct experience than me), the IFA do seem to be genuinely trying to combat sectarianism.

Yeah, it's worth remembering that the worst runner-up won't even get a play-off spot. I'd say some Scottish fans in particular could get a land when they figure that one out.

Yeah, wasn't there some controversy over that? Purely in order to join the more successful side, like. I remember the IFA not being happy.

Why? The Provos at least matched their loyalist counterparts killing for killing during the troubles (you can say a lot of things about Paisley, but he didn't actually kill people.) And it is their ilk who are causing all the current violence and murders (with a bit more popular support than some would like to admit, I think).

I always found the loyalist cause more Noble. It was republicans that started the problems in the north and it is republicans trying to stir things up there now.At least instead of mass bombings the uda/uvf would just go into nationalist areas and pick a select target. As the sign on the shankill road said we welcome the surrender of the ira.

I don't like lads who start things they can't finish, like Roy Keane. Look at them now, taking the queens shilling like Keane took Quinns shiling

Nice try lads but anyone with any knowledge of the conflict knows that it was the bombing of financial targets in London that brought the British to the negotiating table.
Must try harder to rattle folks....
Rugby is a game for Irish Patriots.

Johnny Adair's C company alone had the shinners hiding under the bed, scuttering themselves, the secret war of MI5 and M16 had destroyed the scum, sure McGuiness was onto John Major every 10 minutes looking for a way out, without being seen to lose face, thats how the ceasefire (surrender) came about, read a few of Peter Taylors books instead of An Publicht

Peter Taylor is a protestant writer for a protestant people:wink:
Major would not talk to SF direct before decom, that is one of the reasons why the first ceasfire collapsed.
Must try harder Pol
PIRA conducted a heroic campaign of resistance.
Operations like Warrenpoint were masterstrokes in terms of strategy.

I suppose the likes Martin Dillon is a loyalist as well, keep your Provo version of history for the Sinn fein ard fheis, if you want to see brilliant strategic military action, study the Loughall operation by the SAS, boys against men :lol!:

Read some more books POl. The PIRA campaign in south Armagh was one helicopter away from victory. Had PIRA used it's SAm 7 missiles to down helicopters in S. Armagh then essentially the British army would have lost control of the area. They already had to fly in and out and were mostly confined to base. The sniper campaign was another masterstroke in strategy.
I'm sure in years to come it'll be tuaght at military academies on how a smaller less well equipped force can keep superior numbers penned in.
Wonderful heroic resistance.
Heroes to a man. I hope I see a few of them at the next AF.
And as for the SAS, Robert Nairac ....Pedigree Chum:D

Also pol how did the PRIA ''surrender''? They in the first place took up arms as a last resort and when the opportunity came to achieve things through peaceful means they went that way. All they did was put down there arms not quit.

All they did was put down there arms not quit.what the fuck did they achieve? by 93 they were well beaten, they surrendered albeit in a roundabout manner facilitated by the British propaganda machine in order to save face, and look at them now, taking their money and the Brits still there, darkie Hughes and martin meehan must be spinning in their graves, McGuinness should plugged for treachery

or maybe both sides realised that they could never defeat the other. so, after 30 years of bloodshed and heartache for all concerned they decided to negotiate so that all sides could live like human beings.
just a thought.

Bosnia and Herzegovina 9 beatable
The groups are only half way completed so that picture will change.
What about the Spain and Turkey group, Group 5 I think. One of them will be in the playoffs and would preferably avoided.Bosnia are in that group along with Belgium, Spain and Turkey.
I have my eye on Bosnia, they have some very capable players playing at a decent standard with Blazevic as coach. I really do not want Ireland to play whoever comes second in that group if Ireland have to play off.

How often does it happen though, a team has a great tournament ( Turkey in the Euros) and they struggle or fail to qualify for the next tournament.
oh no
