Sounds like the extreme altitude and dodgy pitch undid the Argentinians.
Altitude shouldn't be a major factor in international football but it's all part of football's rich tapestry I guess...

I don't know about that dude, it's hard enough trying to walk around in that altitude never mind running around for 90 mins.

I don't know about that dude, it's hard enough trying to walk around in that altitude never mind running around for 90 mins.I don't think he's denying that. I'd say his point is more about it being an unfair advantage and that FIFA shouldn't allow it to be a factor. That's an ongoing debate and something that'll probably be resolved one way or another soon enough.
I'm not sure whether Bolivia and Peru have viable alternatives to the stadia they play their home games in but Ecuador choose to play in Quito at a smaller stadium but higher altitude rather than in Guyaquil where there's a bigger stadium at lower altitude.

Fair enough, my bad!

Ive been in la paz.... 4000m above sea level. its hard enough to walk there.... i cant imagine running. the argies were playing at home on sat night so 4 days to climatise.... including getting there.
travelling to la paz .... they probably flew... and flying to such an altitude increases the risk of altitude sickness.
i dont think they would have been ready. sure coca leaves would have helped but i dont think the drug tests would have been friendly.
maradonna would have known bout the altitude factor obviously.... i dont think he expected 6 cunting goals though.

Ya, spot on afeencalleddan - I've been to Bolivia and am well aware of the effects of extreme altitude and I can fully understand how a side might wilt under such conditions. Maradona's Argentina should not be judged too harshly for this game because it sounds like the conditions really undid them.

Some good points about the altitude
Add in the fact that as good as their players are, Argentina have dubious defenders and have been serial bottlers in competitions that matter for over 20 years aswell

Well Maradona, TBF, came out and called the ban on matches at altitude a travesty last year.

Commentators were saying during the game last night that Argentina once trained a B-Team with a world cup game in Bolivia in Mind. The regular side played at home at the weekend and the B-Team in Bolivia in Mid Week. Argentina won the game.

It was altitude pure and simple. Diego was an exponent of this though last season when in his usual manner he sidled up with Morales when Fifa tried to impose a ban on playing at such heights. Now he knows the effects at first hand, the Argentinian football fans will not thank him for this experiment though. Just a blip, roll on the World Cup next year, Messi will become a god.

a buddy told me a few mins ago that he saw it on sky news that they only arrived 2 hrs before the game..... dont know how true that is
if that is the case they must have bussed it from buenos aires.... thats a few fuckin days. they must have been fucked. they would have been climatised but drained.

He never said it wasn't a problem, just said it was unfair to not allow teams to play in their own capital city. If that gave them an advantage, so be it...
