Rugby does not come near the rush of watching your country equalise in the last 5 minutes against the World Champions.

In essence, Rugby is gay.

Because rugby, my dear boy, is nothing more than the lesbian sister of football.

Coz Soccer is the sport of the people.

this is not rugby-bashing. It's considering the games for what they are, for how you as an Irish person feel while watching your country!

Rushes are things you can't control!!

ah but it was only an equaliser

imagine a game where your behind and you can get a single score in the dying moments to win the game

hurling, cricket, rugby, basketball to name a few

Yup.

That was bigger than the grand slam for joe public.

no comparison for me - football every time. but each to their own, i know a couple of lads for whom any kind of irish try would rank higher than last night's equaliser.

to be honest i feel a bit sorry for them because i think they're missing out but whatever lights your candle i guess.

Personally, last weeks grand slam means more to me than Ireland getting to the world cup.

Thankfully, it is actually possible to support both and I still got great enjoyment out of that result last night, and I would love it if we got to the world cup!

Where'd you watch the match, steve?

Weird recession scenes last night: went to a pub on Blackstock Road. There were four people watching Ireland game, and three watching England game.

I can clearly remember where I was for every Irish defining moment in soccer such as Houghton in 88, ronnie whelan's bicycle kick, the quarter finals of italia 90, giants stadium 94, mcateer against the dutch etc etc, where was I when Arland won the triple crown in 2004? haven't a fucking clue

the yucatan bar in dalston. never knew it was an irish pub. a bit dingy but nice staff, cheap pints (2.50 a pint of guinness during happy hour (until 8 ), £3 thereafer) and more screens that i've ever seen in a pub of that size.

borderline. on balance, shilleleagh would have been better; especially considering the late drama and good result. we decided against it though as we knew it would be packed.

yucatan has too many screens really. there were at least 10, with the turkey-spain game (it was dalston after all), the scotland game and a tiny one for england ukraine. i find it's better when a big crowd is all focused on one or two screens. on the plus side: seats.

I'd guess the Shilelagh would've had a lot of Inglezes there too. I don't like watching football with Inglezes. They're either annoyingly pseudo-geezerish, or scary actual geezers whenever there's football involved.

"you just don't get that kind of rush from rugby"

I agree with this for a number of reasons, some of which i can't put into words yet. i'll add them when and if i can, but unfounded wumming is not my goal.

1) Because football is far and away a more skillfull game than rugby, of this there can be no question. It's about controlling and moving a ball in limited space to create space, without using your arms. Football is a low scoring game for this reason. Therefore, when your team scores the rush is much stronger , cos it's far more difficult thing to do than running with a ball in your hands over a line or phunting a dead-ball over a crossbar. As the post above says, Rugby applauds throw ins. pfffft i say.

2) Because if any game can be called truly international then it is Football. Football is a universal language and people all around the world have realised its promise. It can be played against a wall, it can be played with 3 or 4 people, it can be played with a tin-can/ball of rolled up socks. It is an inclusive rather than an exclusive game. Rugby, for the most part, is played by former British colonies and British subjects (4 or 5 exceptions).

*As a side-note, Rugby Union is the less skillfull, more pussy version of the game. League has flow to it, is far more vicious (something which jocks pull out as their game's trump card on here all the time, men of munster, blood and sweat and tears, etc) than Union. League is played by tougher motherfuckers who take far more individual hits than Union players. Please refer to Southern Hemisphere people here. Those who can't hack League there play Union. This is a fact.
