How's it going lads........I know the two of ye are qualified personal trainers amongst other things.......it's an area I'm interested in getting into myself and was wondering what ye would recommend from the point of view of which courses and qualifications I should be aiming for.......ITEC is one I've seen mentioned.........is this widely recognised/worth the paper it's written on?
I'd be looking at maybe combining this with a massage/sports injury treatment course.
Am I crazy to be even thinking about this now?

the n.c.h.e.s. which is run by ucc/n.t.c. in the mardyke areana is 2k odd and had the personal training cert.great course, a good qualification. world recognised. it has an introductiuon to pilates, which is great, as if you go on to do a full pilates course in the future, you can avail of great discounts.
they also do n.m.t. {neuro muscular therapy} physical therapy/sports injury massage.
they are the class leaders ,well worth it .
http://www.ntc.ie/
there is also the n.c.e.f. based in u.l. last time i checked, but they dont offer a 1 off personal training cert. they make you do 1 course for gym instruction, and another for the p.t.
a fucking racket.
i.t.e.c.? there not rated for the p.t. no offence to the locker room who offer the course, but its a fact.
i think paul budden the thai boxer is doing a course there at the moment, so you could ask him.
i do know that i.t.e.c. are great for therapeutic massage, but that differs from sports injury massage.
last point, bar the pilates, {and the shagging areobics}i was board off my head for most of it. if like me your training all your life ,and have beeing studying anatomy charts and reading muscle and fitness mags, then this course will have fuck all to teach you really. its just a case of shutting your mouth, while some wimp of a dude from dublin tells you how to structure a basic programme for a beginner.
when you do get qualified the insurance is around 400 a year.
crazy to be doing this now? maybe. i allready had a business, so could take weekends off to study. i often toy with the idea of opining a gym,i have even costed one and viewed several locations, but i would hate my passion to become my job.
i do think now is a good time to do it. when everyone was on the dole on the 80s, they trained like fuck, and had no problems paying gym fees, to the likes of cork health studios, and the marrion/donnybrook and the like. cheaper than drinking.
hope this gives you an idea.

If you have a good Leaving Cert and not worried about studying full-time then maybe a degree in Sports Studies at UCC might be an idea?

Sweet man......thanks for that........I stumbled across the ntc site last night and it looked promising alright.........I think I'll look inoto that for a course starting in Cork in September.
Like yourself, I've been training for years and have a good knowledge already, but I guess it's all about that little piece of paper and the few letters after your name!!!
I have what I think are great ideas already business wise, whether working as a freelancer or in a gym environment, but will need to explore a little further.
I'll always have the IT degree to fall back on should I decide to go ahead with it and can pick up short term contracts here and there if needs be, but I think the way the jobs market is going at the moment and not really seeing myself in the field in 10-15 years time is a bit of a kick in the arse I need to go and do something I've always been passionate about anyway!

just one thing. i put an add in the paper, got a few clients. took some of them to the mardyke, the other to the lockeroom. grand.
then you would have to go training yourself. right....
i ended up sick of the sight of the gym, and thats NOT right. i love my training and need to train. i de-stress from everything else while in the gym or out on the road.
like you , i have other income so im not pushed. its good to have it to fall back on.
its a cunt to face into a 2 hour run, or a brick if you have all ready spent an hour with a client showing him how to squat. takes the fun out of it.
and for that reason, other than giving out a few freebies on the p.r.o.c.{you know who you are} im out.

That's sweet, have the points covered and then some (I'm proper brainy me!)...........it's something I would have done if I had my time over again.......don't think I could face into full time college again though to be honest.......didn't really enjoy college first time around so full time ain't an option.

Well, I've taken the plunge.....signed up today to do the NCEHS, starting in September in the Mardyke. Just the start though, once I'm done with that, the Physical Therapy course looks bloody interesting as well..........maybe end of next year or something!
