I think the boy deserves one of his own now. There will be A LOT more written about him in the years to come!
Off to a flyer again today against Tim Clark. Hit a few beautiful shots in the brief time I got to watch it over lunch. 3 up on Tim Clark after 7 holes. would have been great had it been Tiger though. McIlroy's record as an amateur indicates that he loves matchplay and excels in it. Don't wanna jinx him but it'd be fabulous if he could win here to add to the Dubai Desert Classic. The DDC is traditionally one of the strongest events on the European Tour so add a WGC event to that before the age of 20 would be phenomenal going. COME ON RORY.....

He has a bigger drive than tiger did at that age. If he shows the same commitment, then maybe he could get himself a major in the next ten years.
First time I came across McIlroy was an interview after he'd shown well in his first three or four tournaments. "I should be contending for tournaments by the end of next year and for majors within 2 or 3 years".
I remember thinking he was a bit arrogant. Turns out he was just being realistic.

McIlroy goes -5 for the 2nd round, -9 overall and 2 shots off the lead. I believe he is playing with Kenny Perry who is -7 for the day (and in the form of his career at the moment). Harrington is having a ridiculously up and down day but will be right back in it if he can have a strong finish. If he could have avoided a few of those bogeys and the double bogey he'd be in with a great position for the weekend but if he could still shoot 1 or 2 under he'd definitely be there or there abouts when the pressure kicks in.

Tiger Woods has lavished praise on Rory McIlroy and claimed the teenager is capable of becoming the best player in the world.
Following his first professional victory at the Dubai Desert Classic earlier in the season, the Northern Irish youngster - who Woods' close friend Mark O'Meara described as more talented than Tiger at the same age - has surged into the top 20 of the world rankings.
He has continued his superb form on American soil, reaching the quarter-finals of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship two weeks ago before bowing out to eventual champion Geoff Ogilvy.
He added to his growing reputation Stateside with a polished showing at the WGC-CA Championship over the weekend, notching up another top-20 finish at the Doral Golf Resort.
His impressive form has caught the eye of Woods who made encouraging strides himself by finishing in a share for ninth in Miami.
Woods insists he has seen enough in the game of McIlroy to claim that the 19-year-old is a future world number one in the making.
"The guy's a talent," Woods stated. "We can all see it, the way he hits the golf ball, the way he putts, the way he can chip, get up and down.
"He has the composure. He has all of the components to be the best in the world, there's no doubt.
"It's just a matter of time and experience in big events. That takes time and I mean, he's only 19."
Tiger's thoughts....

Did anyone else watch the golf? Phil played very well, especially for the first two days but it would have been very interesting to see someone other than his playing partner push him towards the end. He hit some very big shots but still looked a little shaky at times. McIlroy was great for the first 2 & 1/2 days but then had a few bad blips in quick succession on the back 9 Saturday and never recovered. He's some talent though.
Tiger was absolutely immense also and I can't believe how many putts he missed by a whisker! He honestly could have been 15 shots better EASILY over the 4 days. His ball striking was different class and it was just a case of NOTHING dropping. A week or two more though and he's gonna murder the field somewhere. The Master's perhaps? Harrington was solid if unspectacular all week and I'd say he finished around the same spot as McIlroy. Didn't look nearly as comfortable for most the week though. Watney did well too playing with Phil and other than one disappointing hole early on the back 9 he could have won the thing. I'd expect him to win quite a few more tournaments before he's done. -AmadeusDC-

McIlroy has been doing very well of late and will certainly be the golden boy of the European Tour. Hope he sticks with the European tour for a while despite all the big money in the US. He will still play a bit over there but he would be great for tour here.
Doral this weekend is one of his favourite courses and I actually expected more from him this weekend...I know that sounds harsh but he was really well placed by Friday night.

Ehh, Papa it's almost 3am here and I might be drunk but I'm pretty sure Doral was the CA Championship and that was last weekend. I think he was done for a few weeks after last Sunday. In fact, I actually believe the American announcers quoted his manager as saying "he's going to go back to Northern Ireland, putting on a hoodie and be a teenager for a couple of weeks." Maybe I'm wrong but the lad played a fair few weeks in the States and Europe before that so he deserves some time off. BTW, he still finished in the Top 20 at Doral.

This is what I mentioned in the August thread. He has a habit of having a bad hole and then losing a few more vital strokes in quick succession. I said this and then watched it happen (perhaps even jinxed him) when he 4 putted on 16 and then had a triple bogey on 18. 5 shots given up in the last 3 holes. Bye bye any remote chance at this major.
It is something he will have to grow out of before he has any chance whatsoever in a major. It is understandable in a guy his age but it is frustrating all the same. That's why I figured Sunbabe's bet was worthless when she put it on him. Harrington (her other bet) on the other hand is much better value for money. He could still have a great weekend. And Tiger aside, I could see others coming back to him if he is in the hunt Sunday.

Rory's not doing too well with the media these days:
Rory McIlroy had a mixed first round at the Irish Open in Killarney today before following it up with an outburst on Twitter.
The 22-year-old, who finished with a double bogey, said rustiness was the likely cause as he posted a one-under 70 that left him three shots behind the early pacesetters.
"I think I was probably rusty," said McIlroy who has played little golf since finishing tied 25th in the British Open two weeks ago.
"I was caught in two minds with a few shots, which isn't like me, and was not very decisive off the tee," the world number four said.
McIlroy later shared a bitter exchange on Twitter with American Jay Townsend, a former European Tour player who now works for BBC radio.
Townsend tweeted: "McIlroy's course management was shocking. Some of the worst course management I have ever seen beyond under-10 boys' golf competition."
McIlroy quickly replied: "Shut up ... you're a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing!"
His six at the 18th came when he tried to reach the green from sand but landed in the water.
"Fairway bunker play wouldn't be one of the strongest parts of my game," the Northern Irishman told reporters.
Earlier, McIlroy played a stroke which he placed in his all-time top five, bending his ball around trees and on to the green at the 14th after having produced another erratic tee shot.

McIlroy will play Irish Open next year
Wednesday 30 November 2011
by Greg Allen
Rory McIlroy will play in next year's Irish Open, even though it clashes with a high-profile PGA Tour event scheduled to take place at the scene of his US Open triumph earlier this year.
The news was announced on Twitter and confirmed by McIlroy's new management company Horizon this afternoon.
"There has been a lot of speculation on whether or not I will play the Irish Open next year, so I am happy to announce that I will definitely play the tournament," the 22-year-old said in a European Tour statement.
"For me the Irish Open has always been, and will continue to be, one of the most important events on the global golf calendar.
"It's our national open and it's obviously a title that I would love to win at some stage in my career."
There had been some doubt about the 22-year-old's participation in his home open as the AT&T National is due to take place at Congressional on the same weekend.
The Irish Open will take place from 28 June to 1 July in 2012 having been been moved back five weeks to avoid a clash with the London Olympics.
Congressional clearly suited McIlroy's game and he won the US Open by a record margin of eight shots at the course near Washington in June, just two months after a final-round meltdown cost him victory in the Masters.
The venue has yet to be confirmed but McIlroy's decision to play the event may be critical in securing a title sponsor. The 2011 event only went ahead with backing from the European Tour and Failte Ireland.
"With Irish golf on such a high in recent years, it is important that we put on a good show not only for the home fans, but also for the global golf audience who will be watching the event on TV," McIlroy added.
"A lot has been made of me joining the PGA Tour again next year, but in reality it's not a drastic change to the schedule I have played in recent seasons.
"It just means that I will be adding a few more events to my schedule in America in 2012.
"I'll continue to play a similar schedule of events in Europe and will obviously fulfil my commitment to the European Tour."

I know Rory won a major but Donald has been the most consistent golfer on both tours this season and deserves to win the order of merit. Rory would want to cop on as well. RORY McILROY is one of the most recognisable and popular sportsmen on this island but his declaration of intent to represent Britain in the 2016 Olympics, should golf be accepted at next week’s vote of the IOC, is likely to lose him friends on the southern side of the border. “I’d play for Great Britain,” he says. “I have a British passport. It’s a bit of an awkward question. It would be huge play in an Olympics and I’d love to get an Olympic medal one day.”
Golf, of course, is a 32 county sport. The men’s game is governed by the Golfing Union of Ireland, the women’s by the Irish Ladies Golf Union. The teams are known simply as Ireland – that is, until the players turn professional and suddenly the European Tour for reasons best known to itself labels those from the north as “Northern Ireland” even though there is no such entity in the game of golf.
When Rory McIlroy from Holywood, Co Down, and Graeme McDowell from Portrush, Co Antrim, tee it up in the World Cup of Golf in China next month, they will be representing Ireland just as Ronan Rafferty and David Feherty, both Downmen, have done when forming the team in the past.
It was perhaps ill-advised and much too early for McIlroy to voice an option for “Team GB” seven years ahead of golf’s possible reinstatement as an Olympic sport. A great deal could change in that time. Even now, if the Olympics were held next week,
Graeme McDowell has so far remained non-committal. After the International Olympic Committee’s executive board proposed golf and rugby should be included in 2016 at a meeting last month, he stated: “It’s a strange one. Golf’s an all-Ireland sport. I’d play for anyone. I’ve never been able to explain why golf’s an all-Ireland sport and rugby’s an all-Ireland sport but soccer is two different teams. It would be an honour to represent your country and I don’t mind which one I play for.
“It’s the biggest sporting event on the planet. I’d love to be involved in it, love to win a gold medal. It’severy young man’s dream, huge for golf around the world. Golf needs to go to the masses. I’m not a fan of golf being an elitist sport. Fingers crossed I get a chance to do it.”
It is a little ironic that golf and rugby should be up for inclusion in the Games at the same time because these are the sports that have historically unified Ireland. In due course, though, McDowell and McIlroy may have to state an allegiance, like so many from Northern Ireland have had to do before them.
At the Beijing Olympics, Wendy Houvenaghel won a cycling silver medal for team GB while boxer Paddy Barnes captured Ireland’s first medal of the Games.
The R & A, the game’s governing body, used to label Ulster golfers as “United Kingdom” when announcing the draw for the British Open Championship. Nowadays, they follow the European Tour and settle for “Northern Ireland”.
Their chief executive, Peter Dawson, says of the Olympic conundrum: “It’s a question that has yet to be resolved but I suspect that giving the players the choice is the likely outcome.”

still don't see where he doesn't like ireland. plus it's his choice who ever he wants to play with. so meh. plus he has 7 years to make a full commitment. doesn't change my mind on him, i have followed him since his amateur days, still think he's a fantastic player.
but i think your issue was that he supposedly said he didn't like ireland. eh, he never said that

I never said he didn't like Ireland i said he considers himself British. Holds a British passport so he is not Irish.
Yes they played for Ireland as there is no GB team or NI team in the world cup. The Gui is 32 counties so they have no choice but to play for Ireland.
2016 is four years away btw.

A lot will depend on where he is in the world rankings in four years time. If he's world number one he'll be playing for Britain. If he's behind Westwood, Poulter and Casey for example, he'll be throwing his hat in with Ireland
