Govt ‘will have to stem flow of shoppers across border’
24/11/2008 - 11:14:51
Environment Minister John Gormley says the Government will have to look at ways of stemming the flow of shoppers from the Republic to the North.
Mr Gormley was speaking amid speculation that the British government is set to cut VAT rates by 2.5 percentage points as part of an economic stimulus package.
The move could exacerbate the existing price differences that are prompting many consumers from the Republic to travel north of the border when shopping.
Speaking to reporters in Dublin today, the minister said it was important for Ireland the UK to ensure their actions are "in sync" to ensure neither gains a competitive advantage.
Are they going to force us to shop here and continue to get ripped off ?
Fortunately, they can't force us to shop here.
I like the way the government favours tax harmonisation when it works in our favour
Actually, I was in London for the weekend and between the weakness of sterling and the pre-Christmas sales a lot of the shops are doing there, there were some great bargains to be had. Two Ted Baker shirts for £78 (€91) when a single shirt goes for €100+ in Brown Thomas. A box set of all the series of Black Books for £12 (€14). I wonder how much I'd have to pay for that here? Anyone who doesn't go is foolish.

They are going to stick another 90 cents on a litre of petrol(carbon tax-good for us in the long run etc), thereby forcing the use of the rothar for all but the wealthiest (who won't be bothered about getting cheap stuff anyway.)
Cycling to the north is impractical for many reasons, and even illegal if you want to use the M1.

Welcome to 1999.......
They're for work.
We have to do smart casual, which is actually more of a pain than wearing a suit, because you have to have a more varied wardrobe of clothes you wouldn't wear in other settings.

The usual bulbs will be on sale up until March and from then on shops can only stock bulbs they have in store and when they are cleared they will only be able to sell the new energy saving ones.So we are looking at between March/June before the old guys are completely fizzled out..
time to stock up, Gormley, what a fucking idiot. "oh I cycle to the dail, lets tax the fuck out of cars" great idea shithead, if you live in Dublin...At least we can look forward to the fact the Greens will be going the way of the PD's after the next election

I saw Minister John Gormley canvassing in Carrigaline today. He looked in very good form.
Unfortunately for me (fortunately for him), I did not get to ask him why he was here. He is supposed to be a government minister after all and we pay him a good salary to do his job.
He should be behind his desk working and not swanning around here with a big smile on his face. I wish I had his job.

I presume all the Ministers are out canvassing on a Fri.
Michael Martin was around here last week, but this is his constituency.
