View Full Version : Is the current FF Government analagous to John Major's Tory government in Britain?

Just a few thoughts on the parallels.

-It was elected more because the electorate feared change than because of any great belief in it

-It suffered an early financial crisis causing people to lose trust in it

-Both involved fairly weak leaders taking over from someone who had an iron grip on the party

-Individual members of the government seem to show contempt for the values of the general public. For Christy O'Sullivan (Drink Driving), Mattie McGrath (Assault) and the unnamed FF councillor caught snorting cocaine in the Sunday World (http://www.sundayworld.com/), you can read Neil Hamilton, David Mellor etc.

Where the analogy may break down is that Major did at least have an election victory to his name.

But that won't stop me hoping they lose 40% of their seats at the next election.

You'll probably be able to add multiple crises over the role of the country in Europe to that mix.

Has that been proven? I thought the case was still ongoing.

Cowen is a sexual predator. Just wait until he is caught in the act.

Similar analogies could be made to Gordon Brown as well, all though the Labour party is never one for scandal, but it is a hard to job to follow a strong popular leader like Major, Cowen and Brown have done.

Although I think Brown can win the next election for he has done very well with the current economic crisis, and the torries are offering nothing to the public.

With Cowen, I'm not so sure, the next election will be close to call, can you see the other parties offering much to the public?

Whatever about Kenny I would prefer to see Richard Bruton in charge of the country's coffers he talks a lot of sense and is an economist. Cowen and Kenny are both weak, I had expected Cowen to be a lot better than he has proven to be. Next up lets see how he deals with the public sector......will he go for the frontline staff or the big boys and what next for the quangos!!!!

Back on topic, there is a lot of similarities but will we get a Tony Blair to clean up the mess??

Heh heh heh.

Imagine, a new Taoiseach who would sign our defence forces over to the US and then take backhanders from F1 in order to postpone the tobacco advertising ban. Not to mention invading a middle eastern country on the basis of dodgy "inteligence" from his handlers in Washington DC. Then when he retires change religion and go off on the after dinner circuit.

Imagine!

The true test of this Government is if they actually tackle public sector pay within 12 months otherwise this coalition will collapse slowly.

Gordon Brown is considering reducing income tax to stimulate Britains economy even after historic reductions in interest rates which will fall even further and we get an income levy with stealth tax.

Racism. The Tories are quite racist and with your man doing the nazi salute in the dail, they're catching up.

That seems to be the general consensus alright, but there must have been something more to it for the DPP to bring charges.

That's a nice spot down around there alright, but the drink driving is a curse. Years ago fellas used go out as far as Glenville from town and fish out around there and then have a few pints, but that's all finished now.
The pubs around there are deserted and most of them don't even open during the day anymore.
