Something has to be done about this government. The budget and general running of OUR finances are a disgrace. Lets pick somewhere that represents this sham of a party in Cork City and do it. Can't get away with it.

Town last saturday.

Think they are planning a bigger one this weekend. Main problem is that the loons have infiltrated it already.

I agree - we need to protest in the strongest possible terms.
I shall draft a highly-critical letter to the Irish Times on the back of my napkin whilst enjoying a three-hour lunch tomorrow.
I should be free around 4ish if there's going to be a march as I like to take a stroll after a big lunch.

Every FF TD's office should be picketed until something is done.

Here,here.
I'm willing to do the 4.00pm to 4.05pm slot if that's any help - I'll still be a little juiced after my long lunch but a bit of fresh air will liven me up for the evening's festivities.

It was beautiful pwnership

had to listen to it again this morning on rte.ie, highly entertaining. Gilmore however, is nothing more than a yes man. Agreeing with everyone and putting forward no original alternatives of his own.

What will you write on the protest signs?
You are a couple of years too late to protest the managing of the finances.

Seems the OAPs have started to march on the Dáil. They took off from St. Andrew's Church on Westland Row this afternoon and are expected to arrive at the gates of the Dáil by tomorrow noon ... :D

Still, I wouldn't want to be Willy O'Dea tomorrow with these feens waiting for ya outside:

Guys,

You're all making a fuss over nothing.

The government may have taken medical cards, increased class sizes, taxed the poor and bailed out the builders, but the good news is that every individual Fianna Fail TD and councillor opposed the budget.

You may continue to vote for them.

I watched that bunch of rabble rousers winding up all the coffin dodgers at that protest yesterday.

They were shouting people down and basically looked like an advert for euthanasia.

I'd say most of them have alzheimers.

Over 70?

Here have a medical card even though you are on €700 a week.

28, with an asthmatic child and earning €600 a week?

Fuck off and pay for your own medication.

Where is the justice in that, and why are the geriatrics being given in to? Is it because they shout the loudest? Is it because they are all at home all day listening to their cheerleader Joe Doofy, from Bally Fermeh?

Or could it really be that they vote more than younger people, so FF are more afraid of them?

Democracy?

You're having a laugh.

Or could it really be that someone over seventy has paid nearly 40 years worth of extra taxes and insurance contributions than the 28 year old?

Slightly over the top but i'd agree with the sentiment. I can't understand if you over 70 and have a €36,000 pension then why should you get a medical card.

The students are protesting and now the farmers and teachers are looking likely to do so next week. Do people not realise there is a recession on and everyone has to take a hit?

No it couldn't really be that someone over seventy has paid nearly 40 years worth of extra taxes and insurance contributions than the 28 year old.

That would be too simplistic, and would be the kind of "argument" put forward by someone who thinks that only those who have contributed should be helped out by the taxpayers.

Tax and PRSI contributions are made in order to benefit those most in need.

An ill 69 year old on €350 per week should be more entitled to a medical card then a fit 70 year old on €700 per week.

Pensioners over 70 years of age were given an entitlement to a Medical card – this was a universal right regardless of means. It has proven to have very positive medical benefits for older people – keeping them out of expensive stays in hospitals and other residential care institutions. In fact over time I suggest it will pay for itself.

As a society we should be constantly striving to improve the lot of the most vulnerable in our society including the old, young, homeless, ill etc. The introduction of this universal medical card was a positive step forward in our society.

The fact that a tiny minority of pensioners did not require this benefit is a slight digression. The same could be said of any other universal right our state bestows on our citizens – Free Travel, Children’s Allowance etc.

The problem with the Universal Medical Card scheme was with the agreement the Government negotiated with the IMO (The Doctors). The Doctors were “screwing” the State and becoming very wealthy on the backs of old age pensioners. The government shamelessly went after the easy target (the pensioners) as opposed to taking on the real problem – the Medical profession.

The government have rolled back their decision and dressed it up as increasing the income threshold. Yes it is good that 95% of pensioners will keep their medical card but the right of universal access to a medical card for the over 70’s has gone. There is no guarantee that future governments won’t decrease these income thresholds.

I applaud the elderly who protested yesterday. They know that their own medical card is safe but they still travelled in their droves to Dublin to protest against the principal of the issue at stake. They have their medical card – they are fighting for the principal of universal access. They are fighting for the right for future pensioners like you and me to have a medical card if we are lucky enough to reach 70 years of age.

Laudable sentiments. Perhaps you could cost the above, and recommend how much of a tax increase you propose everybody pays in order to pay for all of it?

I think it is also a great idea to buy a house for everybody in the country as well, and in the spirit of "Universality," we should go the whole hog and give everybody a car with "free" fuel as well.

I am sure you can massage the figures to prove that this will all be "cheaper in the long run."

Meanwhile the geriatric coffin dodgers with their snouts in the trough will continue to shout and roar the loudest while the disabled and homeless will continue to exist on a pittance with little chance of ever reaching 65, not to mind 70.

But sure, we all know that FF, FG, Labour and the Greens have all done their research and know that over 70s are the most likely to vote, therefore they are disproportionately powerful in this corrupt society.
