You forget his taking apart of Arsenal in the cup semifinal that year. He took a mediocre Spurs team and got them to a cup final. Not bad considering all his failures afterwards.
He will always be remembered for wasting his talent.
That said he chose the wrong club when he went to Rangers.

Also the kicking in the neck to a lad called Garry Parker, and one of the worse tackles seen at Wembley.

The poor guy. He needs help, and I hope he gets it. He was a great player the goal he socred for England against Scotland in Euro 96 was pure class.
Get well soon Gazza.

That say's it all about J.B's contribution to England actually.
Gaza was influential in helping England reach the semi-final at Italia 90.
Little did we know that this was to be probably his "finest hour".
Gazza had his off the field problems but I think he could have been England's
best midfielder since Bobby Charlton. Wasting supreme talent is always
sad but Gazza is probably another one on the list.
Please don't compare him to George Best who made the most of his talent
long enough to win 2 League and 1 European Cup medals and also be voted
Europe's best footballer.
Get well soon Gazza! :D

I'm no Liverpool fan as you know POL but I think that Kenny Dalglish would
fit in before Gazza in the "order of merit" here. :)

8-)
Going to Spurs (London) could have been Gazza's 1st big mistake. 2nd going
to Italy. Huge cities and countries where he couldn't speak the language
were hardly good choices (I smell agent's commission here), for a young man
whose mentality was always somewhat fragile.
Alex Ferguson was mad to sign Gazza who had given him a verbal decision to
join United but changed his mind. No problems here as Roy Keane did the
same to Kenny Dalglish in his Blackburn days.
This is not a "Ferguson adoration" post but I think that the following question
could be asked here.
Do you think that Gazza would have fulfilled all his undoubted promise or
"gone down the tube" if he had signed for Manchester United?
Given Ferguson's ability to get the best out of young talented players I think
that Gazza would have become one of "the greats" of English football as his
talent surely warranted.
All opinions welcome! :?:

Fair point Eb but probably typical of Gazza he also f..ked himself in the
process putting his move to Lazio "on hold".
Roy Keane said that while the players were waiting for the habitual pre
match handshakes he glanced over at Gazza whose eyes were glazed and
looked absolutely crazy.

McGrath and Whiteside had gone before 1990.
In 1990/1991 Gazza had not developed the alcohol problem that was to
bring him down later. Sure he liked a good few pints just like Robson, Keano,
Bruce and some other Utd. players who had successful and rewarding
careers.
My point is that if Ferguson was able to control that lot and get the best out
of them on the pitch he could have done the same with Gazza!
It's on this that I asked for opinions ok! :)

So there's nothing wrong with going back on your word because Roy did it subsequently?

Signed contracts hold up legally - verbal agreements don't.
Players can be shafted by a club when their contracts expire even if they
have given long service to the club. Until both sides have "put pen to paper"
all's fair in love and war".
If Dalglish'd had the contract prepared Keane woud have signed it on the
spot. As it happened Blackburn's office had closed before Dalglish and Keane
finished their chat. Arrogance of the highest order from K.D. thinking that
just by throwing money at R.K. he was going to "get his man".
As events subsequently showed although, Keane was offered less money by
United his career was far more rewarding!

There is just no helping some players, from Best/Friday through to Gazza/Collymore, Nobody (not even SAF) could help any of them, they are just beyond help, simple as that...
