Sharp decline in alcohol consumption this year
AOIFE CARRThere has been a sharp decline in alcohol consumption during the first half of this year, according to the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI).
An analysis of excise receipts from the Revenue Commissioners reveal sales of alcohol were down 14 per cent last month compared to August 2007 and fell by 7 per cent during the first eight months of the year.
DIGI chairman Michael Patten predicted today the decline in alcohol consumption will continue.
“On the basis of these figures, it’s likely that we’ll see a decline in alcohol consumption per adult of 8 per cent or more during the current year, that’s
more than the decline we saw over the past six years combined,” he said.
Mr Patten said the industry was under pressure due to a combination of a weakening economy and a high cost base for alcohol producers and retailers
“We’re being hit by the double whammy of high costs and a weakening economy. This is worrying news for jobs in the domestic alcohol manufacturers in particular and for the traditional high-employment retail sector.”
Tony Foley, an economist with Dublin City University who carried out the analysis, said sales of alcohol were down in pubs and restaurants as well as in off-licences and supermarkets.
He said sales of alcohol had been falling in Ireland since 2001.
“Despite common perceptions, alcohol consumption in Ireland peaked in 2001 and has been in decline since. These figures show however that the pace of that decline has picked up dramatically.”
Off you go diageo and vintners and put up the price AGAIN.
Pubs closed all over Cork right now.

are they talking about a combination of pubs and off-licences having trade down, or just pubs..I can understand that the pubs are not making as much since they're a complete rip-off these days...the off-licenses are clearing up though with people seeing the benefit of house parties instead of heading into town...

The amount of excise duty collected is down, but does that just mean that we spent less money on Alcohol, or that we actually consumed less alcohol?
Like does it mean that we are paying less, because we are buying more in supermarkets than in pubs? And when they say "supermarkets," they normally never include Aldi and Lidl who are extremely secretive about their figures, and are not affiliated to any Irish organisation like RGDATA, VFI, the off licences group, LVA, or IBEC, as is the rest of the industry.
Off the beer myself at the moment.
For health reasons as well as financial. Although lately I had taken to bringing a load of beer out with me and smuggling it into the club in my record bag.
The pubs only ahve themselves to blame though, they kept jacking teh prices up and assumed 'ah sure this is Ireland, people will pay as much as we like'
Absolutely zero sympathy for them.

About time that we sobered up as a nation.
The vintners also killed the goose that laid the golden egg.Only the good pubs with proper facilities, entertain ment & maybe good food will survive.

I don't know about Ireland quitting the dirink, but I bloody well am!
Lads hangovers are awful, why do we do it to ourselves, i'm on a strict no-hangovers-no-more policy.
I'll likes me Murphy's but drinking is being cut back to non-hangover inducing levels, 4 pints should be me limit, drank along with water or a soft drink at some point in the night.
No more feeling like shite for Riordan.

Duty should be the same regardless of whether it's bought in an off licence or pub. VAT would be proportional to the price. The article only refers to sales, although that may be sloppy journalism.

Lord the types of pubs with proper facilities, entertain ment good food are the ones like the Crain Lane, Reardans, the Bodgea, awful places!, the good pubs have none of those things, like Callaghans on Georges Quey, the place hasn't changed since the Civil War, its fantastic, buckets of charm that place.
Establishments with a bit of quality will always survive, Le Chateau, on Pana, Cantys, the Hi-B, the Vault, Long Valley. Those places will never close.

Callanans.
Like.
;-)
More Pioneers would be good to be honest.
I reckon there's a direct correlation between alcohol consumption and the health of the economy. We should encourage people to drink more to get the economy back on track.
