View Full Version : John McCain announces running mate

The Banker
29-08-2008, 05:41 PM
US presidential candidate John McCain has chosen Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his vice presidential running mate.

Ms Palin, 44, was elected in 2006 as Alaska's first female governor. The mother of five built a reputation as a reformer in a state that recently has been hit with corruption scandals.

The surprise choice marks a huge political risk by John McCain, and a blatant bid to win over disgruntled Hillary Clinton supporters.

smart move.

that'll get a few pissed off Hilary supporters.

plus it shores up the conservative base - she's a pro-lifer and has a military son who is due to go into action in Iraq.

very interesting choice - we could end up with either the first black president of america, or , if mccain gets a heart attack in office, the first ever woman president of america.

That's pretty ridiculous. He doesn't follow what you'd expect from a black gay in the same way we have a token army mother here, holding all the views you'd expect them to.

"A potential vice president with the ideology of Dick Cheney and fewer qualifications than Dan Quayle"

I think McCain has blown his chances..she so far right she has chalk on her boots. The notion that Hillary supporters will vote for somebody who is diametrically opposed to their own candidate simply because she has tits is amusing.

She's as bigoted as they come but I have to say I'd give her one in a shot!

thats an plus rather than a negative - that shores up the libertarian/isolationist wing of the republican party.... the Ron Paul types.

plus at the same time shes strong on the pro-life issue - so thats the conservative christian wing sorted out.

plus she's female - so that the "soccer moms", and even a fair few conservative Democrats coming over.

yes - there is such a thing as a conservative democrat - ever wonder why Lieberman is backing McCain?

you do know that obama attended a church by one Reverand Wright who preaches black supremacy, and has close links to the anti-semite Louis Farrakhan.

and that obama's first fund raiser in Illinois was in the house of the ex-terrorist Marxist Bill Ayers?

The scariest thing about this is that he is like in his 70's, he has had cancer around 5 times and is more than likely going to die in the next 7 years.
Should he die, Palin will be President.
That is presuming he gets elected.

Imagine having a "Hockey Mom" as a president who has a 17 year old pregnant daughter.
She can hardly manage her child, let alone the millions of Americans who would be depending on her...

sweet jesus. how this woman has the gall to accuse anyone of not giving direct answers to questions is beyond me. endless answers of "on the one hand we may, on the other hand we may". also, she could not even answer one simple question about mc cains record over the last 26 years. but she could soon be the vice president of the world's only super power.

she's a creationist too.that alone should disbar her from being in charge of a fucking envelope never mind second in command in the white house.

Palin's approval rating as slumped dramatically over the past week (at least 10%), probably because of the lampooning she has received. I am diametrically opposed to the McCain/Palin ideology but how can so many people switch their allegiance so whimsically. It proves many of the voting public are irrational clowns.

i would usually agree with you. but in this case i think the american voters have just looked at her performance and thought "NO FUCKING WAY, ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WAY. I WOULDN'T LET HER MOP THE FLOORS IN THE SCHOOL CANTEEN, NEVER MIND PUT HER IN CHARGE OF WHOLE FUCKING GOVERNMENT, NO FUCKING WAY JOSE."

http://www.belfasttelegraph .co.uk/breaking-news/world/north-america/palin-accuses-obama-of-associating-with-terrorists-13993463.html

US Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is accusing the Democratic candidate Barack Obama of associating with terrorists.

In a speech while fundraising in Colorado yesterday, she said the Illinois Senator was an embarrassment and that he was "palling about" with people involved in terrorist's activities.
It comes just days after both sides set aside political differences to urge Congress to pass the 700 billion dollar financial bailout package.
Mr Obama is dismissing the remarks as "gutter politics".

But Fox and the rightist media will air these statements, the liberal and even neutral media will be reluctant to criticise her for for of being accused of sexism.

There's a bit of the 'Boris Johnson's' about her which could get her and McCain in.

She's also claimed Obama will pull troops out of Iraq and has implied he'll give all of Jerusalem to the Palestinians.

She's claiming the NY Times reported the Obama 'connection' when it actually stated the opposite:

In the next few days we'll have the ads juxtaposing Obama with various terrorists, Muslims, Europeans and whoever Republican fellow travellers think will scare undecided voters.

The more liberal/left people go on, the more it'll play into the Repubicans hands

For the past eight years (at least in perception) I have wandered through life under the Bush 'administration' and at times wondered if I was dreaming, or in limbo, or on a bad trip.

Now I know it must be the case. My previous concept of reality could not have included such a bizarre manifestation as Sarah Palin.

In short, I am in a lucid dream and have made her up. It's my dark side at work clearly. I've also by extension made everything else up, including you lot. You're fun though. She's not. She scares me. I wish to un-create her and wake up now. Weetabix would be nice for breakfast. Goodbye, amusing figments of my overactive imagination.

Obama should use the example of Gerry Adams or Martin McGuinness to play down his "terrorist links". Both are reformed terrorists, now engaging in democracy - a victory mainly for the Clinton/Democratic presidency. It shouldnt be such a big deal that he is "friendly" with a former terrorist.

There are a few references to Northern Ireland and the former Yugoslavia that Obama shouldnt be afraid to pull out of the bag to show that Democrats bring peace. At least he can spin it that way.

I saw part of the debate this morning on RTE and I have to say that McCain came across very well. Obama did too but the conditions are all far too safe, nothing like we have in Ireland or the UK when it comes to debates.

McCain seemed to get a good blow in when he mentioned how much Fannie Mae were bank rolling Obama. It wasnt refuted when Obama took the mic.

MEDIAWATCH: MIDWAY THROUGH her debate with Joe Biden, Sarah Palin began dropping her Gs and channelling Marge Gunderson, the plain-speakin', pistol-packin' pregnant police chief in Fargo.
Palin declared, in no uncertain terms, that she needn't answer questions put to her by the moderator, that Obama-lovin' Gwen Ifill, who works for the ultraliberal Public Broadcasting Service, or anybody else in the mainstream media. She was gonna talk straight to the American people.
It was great theatre, but in a Beckett-like absurdist way. It is a tried and true tactic of the American right to blame any and all their problems on the "mainstream media". They even have an acronym for it: MSM, as if it's some malevolent Chinese food additive. According to the right, the only place the American people can get fair and balanced news is from the likes of Fox, Rush Limbaugh, and the rest of the right-wing ideologues who clutter the airwaves on talk radio.

from some chain mail type thingy.......

Let me see if I have this straight…

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."

Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.

*

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.

*

Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well-grounded.

*

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.

*

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.

*

If you teach responsible, age-appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.

*

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America's.

If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.

OK, much clearer now!

point of information - senior lecturer, not professor
