Heard this rumour that Heineken have to choose which Stout they are to keep brewing and which gets the chop forever due to anti competition laws. This is an outrage, can't believe heineken can be so ruthless, rather than selling one. Hope this is a rumour, or else its guinness for me

That is not entirely correct. In reality, the competition authority in Ireland is looking at the implications of the Heineken acquisition of Scottish & Newcastle's Irish operations, which are primarily Beamish & Crawford. Heineken may be allowed to proceed with the takeover, in which case it has committed to continuing to produce both Murphys and Beamish. It may however be prevented from taking over Beamish & Crawford if the takeover is adjudged to be anti competitive.

If this happens, then Beamish & Crawford will be put up for sale. It could then be acquired by another international brewing group, or it could be the subject of a management buyout.

In any case, should Heineken be allowed to take over Beamish & Crawford, it would still have a smaller share of the market than UK group, Diageo which produces Guinness, Budweiser, Carlsberg, Harp, and Smithwicks.

If Heineken acquires Beamish & Crawford it would produce Heineken, Murphys, Beamish, Coors, Miller, Fosters, and Carling.

I think an MBO would be best.

To drink Guinness because two Cork based companies are being told to divest some brands even though their combined market share would be less than Diageos would be the most harebrained idea imaginable.

(Short of reducing speed limits to reduce carbon emissions.)

Developers have their eyes on redeveloping either or both of the sites which would be worth millions long term and a management buyout could'nt compete with that.An out of city centre site may be in the offing.

All just rumours of course

Those rumours of "sites worth millions" are as relevant as the celtic tiger to todays market for commercial property in Cork. Beamish is a listed building.

There were even rumours that they were both going to merge and build a new mega brewery on the Amgen site.

I thought Heineken already owned Beamish & Crawford

They do. They inherited it as part of their takeover of Scottish & Newcastle, but the Irish Competition Authority may force them to sell it off if it decides the acquisition may distort competition in the Irish market. It is still deliberating.

It would be commercial suicide for them to drop Beamish in the short term anyway unless they combined the brands in some stouty merger. It'd be like Glen Rovers and the Barrs merging. Some fucking quare shit could happen.

or they could just brew Murphish or Beamy's, both are pretty catchy.
