Arsenal have a decent chance IMHO.

They've lost two important players, replaced one (Hleb) with a better one (Nasri). They look short in bite in midfield, but if they don't get a horrible run of injuries, and Eduardo comes back in good nick, they'll do well. If they signed Veloso, I'd rate their chances as excellent.

Liverpool haven't sorted their deficiencies in attacking/wide midfield. Dossena and Degen will give them some width, and Keane will do well when they actually play him as a striker. But as a team who've stumbled upon 4-2-3-1, with little in the 3, wasting the whole summer chasing Barry (in their strongest area of the pitch) and spending a Torres fee on Keane seems baffling.

For Arsenal or Liverpool to win it will take a huge fuck up by both Chelsea and Manchester United,

Missing Mascherano at the moment is huge, he is of equal importance to the team as Torres (IMO)

The only positive that can be taken from Liverpool's performances so far is that they can't get any worse (i hope)

warren888k
17-08-2008, 11:40 AM
it will all depend on injuries for arsenal and also how their small midfield stand up to the more physical teams.

they weren't that far away last year, if they could have turned only 2 or 3 of those drawn games that they should have won into actual wins they would have been right there at the end.

Liverpool have max. points without playing well. All of the top 4 teams have too much quality than the others WHEN they are 100% on form.
Very often though it's points "nicked" when you aren't 100% can be the difference between winning and losing the title. In recent times Liverpool haven't been doing this and have been playing "catch up" whereas United and Chelsea have won games when they've "had their foot off the accelerator".
Early days yet though and really we won't have any real idea until the begining of October who are going to make the running.

Well, despite all their weaknesses, Liverpool do have something United and Arsenal lack - a great striker. Still can't see them winning it though. They should finish ahead of Arsenal who have a very threadbare squad. They should have got rid of Adebayor. He's over-rated, just lucky enough to be a striker in a team that creates lots of chances.
Chelsea should win the league this year. United are shite without Ronaldo and their squad is full of dross (O'Shea, Fletcher, Carrick etc.) and fellas who are past-it (Scholes and Giggs).

Don't be taking my Keane comment out of context, as you can see from the bottom of the post and dozens of others from that time I thought it was a stupid signing, compounded by the fact that Rafa decided he could play anywhere along the front-line. He can't. You'll also see I said Degen wasn't up to much (he hasn't even played, but he's decidedly average- at best). Drossena I'll give you.

Only top 4 team I'd write off in terms of winning it is Chelski. Arsenal are a long shot, but they came from nowhere two years back to mount a serious challenge... I have a similar feeling about them this season.

United are weaker than last season, remains to see how they rejig. Liverpool (assuming Aquilani settles and does well) are only as good as they were last season. Chelsea are getting stale. Arsenal still lack bite but won't miss Adebayor and might not miss Toure either if Vermaelen does well.

I wouldn't want to call it anyway.

Whatever about whether or not they'll be as good as last season, they're highly unlikely to take a full 12 points off United and Chelsea again. That was a once in a decade bonus which they spunked by failing to beat dross.

Obviously, it's a big plus in their column that they've finally shaken off their inferiority complex in league games against that pair, so they'll have no fear against them this season. But they don't seem to have added the finesse to be sure of breaking down stubborn defensive opponents.

Likewise, United can't rely on Ronaldo's brilliance to dig them out of a hole on days where nothing's coming off.

Will be an interesting one.

Listen up you deluded Bird Brains: Liverpool spent 2/3 of last season poxing and grinding results, with drivelly power-hOof ball nonsense. It was disgusting on the eye and they played by far the shitest football of the top 4.

Everybody seems to have forgotten this though, and have been whipped into a hysteria in light of Liverpool's strong finish to the season, starting around the time of the Real Madrid mauling.

So in summary, Liverpool FC are cock rot of a side, i'd be very surprised if they come up with any type of goods this season. They have two top notch performers and tha'ts it.

Fuck me, that fifth goal was shocking. Fabregas strolled (literally... he barely broke a sweat) 50-60 yards through the centre of the pitch, no challenge. Fallaini hared after him and then mysteriously stopped as he was about to catch him... everyone else just looked on. Awful.

If I was considering the chances of various teams winning the Premiership this year, I'd say

Utd 40%
Chelsea 40%
Arsenal 20%

Nobody else with a shot, despite City's big spending.

Liverpool are half a squad short of challenging.

Arsenal's main problem is an iffy keeper.
