I know they invested hugely in the run up to this olympics and their aim is to top the medals table, but one or two of their medal winners are popping up on the aul 'is really that possible' radar.

Gary O'Toole was in no mood for talking about their 1 2 in the 200m butterfly yesterday. Neither swimmer was fancied at all. Memories of michelle smith came to mind.

Reports that members of their gold winning female gymnastics team are a couple of years younger than the 16 year old limit are also in the news.

At the end of the Athens olympics the medals read as

Rank Nation Gold Silver Bronze Total
1 United States (USA) 36 39 27 102
2 China (CHN) 32 17 14 63
3 Russia (RUS) 27 27 38 92
4 Australia (AUS) 17 16 16 49

Halfway through its

Country Gold Silver Bronze Total
1 China 22 8 6 36
2 USA 14 12 17 43

I know they won't do as well as the yanks in week two but still. Alls not right in the state of Denmark. Their gold to silver and bronze ratio is extraordinary. Anyone notice any other odd results in the last week?

some very dodgy judging in the shooting:

I wouldn't put it past them, they've done it in the past, but I'll bet they're not the only ones.

I think they've invested a lot of money in the last 10 years to ensure a good showing at this years games. They were always going to improve on their haul 4 years ago IMO.

Yeah that defintely was very suspicous......Z Liu & L Jiao were never top class swimmers, and they win by 2 seconds...

It does spoil it when you know they must be taking some perfomance drugs.

He also made reference to a similar situation in 1991. Anybody have more info on that?

Just saw thee latest olympic news on BBC sport

Cao Lei's win in the women's 75kg category makes it a remarkable seven golds for China in the weightlifting. The two-time world champ broke three Olympic records on her way to victory.

Gary O' Toole is top pundit. Not a swimming fan but I always find him interesting.

He's absolutely convinced the Chinese swimmers are. Said as a swimmer you always know who is and isn't doping.

The age limit for the gymnastics is 16 and 2 of the Chinese women's team still had their baby teeth FFS!! Even there own government documents show that they are underage. Were issued with new passports making them 16 a few months back. No one will do anything about it though. What was the year the 3 runners came out of no where to beat Sonia? They were absolutely smashing records and as far as I know were never heard from again.

A full set?

~goes looking for pictures of the said "16" year old~

Seriously, she looked the same age as the one who Milli-Vanilli'd that hymn during the opening ceremony.

Ya the points have been a joke in fairness there's been times when lads heads have recoiled from shots and nothing gained.

More shenanagians (sp?) with judging and the chinese

Britain's Sarah Stevenson took Olympic bronze in the women's +67kg taekwondo after a rollercoaster day of emotions.
Stevenson's gold medal hopes look to be over after an incident-packed defeat by Chen, the defending champion in the last eight.

Britain appealed after judges missed a final-round kick to the head by Stevenson which would have been enough to win.

The result was reversed - thought to be a first for the sport - after video footage was considered, but Stevenson could not take full advantage of the reprieve as she slumped to defeat against Del Rosario Esoinoza.

"I'm not sure why the judges didn't see it in the first place. External pressures? I don't know."

Chen had never lost in the Olympics before, claiming the gold medal in the 2000 and 2004 Games.

"She didn't win - I won and that's it. The judges can take your dreams away," she said straight after the bout. Stevenson was competing in her third Olympic Games, and went into the tournament in fine form after winning gold in the recent Dutch and Belgian Opens.

The incident came hot on the heels of similarly questionable scoring in Aaron Cook's defeat by China's Zhu Guo on Friday.

Stevenson had kicked off her campaign with a 3-2 victory over Jordan's Nadin Dawani to reach the last eight.

was watching that live earlier.on BBC..something else alright... they came out and announced the change to the result in english only , and the chinese only knew the change when the british girl cam e out for thw semi final... they booed her throughout the bout to the mexican, was pretty bad form to be honest... the chinese girl was beaten fair & square and justice was done , but she was their hero.

Well see how we go tommorow with kenny Egan.... home town crowd against him.

As the lads in studio said, lets hope that one of them wins a gold before the Egan bout. It'll take the pressure off the judges.

Figure of speech?

Very poor today. Egan was gracious in defeat but I thought he had grounds to be annoyed. The studio pundits were pointing out clear hits he didn't get points for while the chinese boy got everthing. Home advantage has always been around but its only when you're on the receiving end of it does it taste bitter.

And even with home advantage, and a population twice that of the European Union, they still failed miserably.

The European Union won 86 gold medals, and the Chinese were a distant second.

Fair play to them anyway for trying, but they'll never match Europe's sporting prowess.

I've started on the advanced gene manipulation course already... I'll be looking to smash Bolt's record in London 2012...

They won't doubt me though...i won Bronze in the Under 12's 100 Metres in the Cork City Sports in 1984 and won a host of medals at the Cloyne school parish sports in my halcyon days of the early 80's so i have huge pedigree- I was Cloyne's answer to Carl Lewis...
