Not too much to say really, the Laughing Langers will be the latest chapter in the Cork comedy scene. Although we are a small operation, we will be bringing regular comedy nights from our new city center venue, as well as bringing the comedians to other venues in both the city and county.
We firmly believe in supporting new and upcoming comedians as well as people interested in becoming a comedian. This support will be provided by way of in house training/workshops, advise, mentoring, information and performances. Other more well known comedians will also be making appearances in the Laughing Langers trying out new material or new one man shows.
It wasn't really my intention to start the Laughing Langers, but I did think that the plans I had for the Craichouse were good ones, that would benefit the new comedians. This along with the large number of calls I got from comedians after my exit, prompted me to try with the Laughing Langers. So with our new location and prime night, and a lot of luck and support, it might just work. If it fails, well fuck I started my guitar lessons last week, so I have the eurovision 2010 to get ready for.

The comedy scene up here in Galway is quiet good, would you ever think of bringing one of your shows on the road?

I love the comedy scene in Galway, I was up there in Cuba with Paddy a few months back, class place. Yeah it was part of the plan to bring some lads out on the road to various clubs around the country under the banner "Cork Knights of Comedy", but as I would also bring some of the Dublin lads I might just stick with Knights of Comedy. It's a f**k up going to a new venue on your own, so this would encourage more comedians to hit the circuit, plus cut down on the expences.

I know some comedians who will only write new material when their stoned, and it certainly worked for them, I have even tried writing new stuff under a different state of mind which was funny but way too sick for stand up which I discovered, my apologies to the people in the beerhouse that night, but they found it funny in Manchester, then again the crowd in Manchester were pissed out of their skulls, ,,,,,,I think it's time for happy hour, well it's gone 10.00am.

To be honest i dont think a comedy club in cork is sustainable and its a lost cause to think it is. There seems to be more comedy clubs than comedians in cork and comedy supporters arent goin to go and see the same faces and jokes week in week out. Give up the game lads.

have you ever been to comedy in cork? there are plenty of comedians, just like there are plenty of cynics like yourself. if people decided to get up off their holes and went to an actual comedy night with actual comedians then they would find that the comedy in cork is dynamite.
rebelangel - are you aware of the fact that there are 6 comedy clubs in cork? or do you just read the papers and look for the nice shiny advertisements with the nice shiny comedians on them?
(apologies for being so brash, i have had my coffee yet today)
Congrats though Pat, great to see you back on the saddle again :)

I've been to plenty of comedy shows in cork. If you see my second sentence i was saying there are loads of clubs in cork. I left out a word in my firsts sentence which was another. I meant to say that the city is saturated wit comedy. Id prefer 2 clubs of a high standard instead of 6 saturated clubs. I was at the craichouse bout 3 months ago and about 4 ppl there. Bloody joke to be honest. more comedians than an audience.

well my advice is dont go to these clubs if your going to Piss and moan about it your the kind of punter that no one wants at a comedy Club.
Pat O Shea deserves respect for what he has done for the comedy scene in Cork. The comedy scene can be a very snobbish and bitchy one, and what he did was open it up to people who want to give it a lash without ego, I have seen and worked with some top class people in the craichouse. It takes balls to do what they do, its so Easy for you to sit behind your computer and make snide remarks and be negative. What do you know about it? Have you any informed opionions to offer? I wouldnt be surprised if you were someone with a personnel grudge with Pat because your only posts on the forum are againist him...

I dont have any grudge against pat o shea. Dont even know the man personnally. Im just offering my insight into the comedy scene in cork. U dont like it then go somewhere else. This is a discussion forum. What were the avergae figures for the craichouse in the last year or so. Iv been to comedy at city limits for some top comedians and iv seen very small numbers. it must be non existant at the craichouse and the other small venues.

wow, take it easy there soldier :)
I can see where rebelangel is coming from, there have been really poor weeks in the craichouse, having been there myself and yes cork does seem to be saturated with comedy clubs but to be honest it isn't. it comes down to PR, budget and comedians willing to actually gig.
PR - One club in cork has an exceptional budget to put into their PR. They just do the flyers, some posters and online advertising - not that much to be honest and they are successful. The smaller clubs do not have this budget nor do they have the stature like City Limits which of course affects the comedy on show.
Budget - Again this is linked to PR, without multiple PR ideas then people will not come in thus leading to a decrease in budget. It's a tough scenario but money is a major in comedy venues
Comedians - well what isn't there to say about these peeps. a lot of these guys in the bigger comedy world would not piss on you let alone infrom you f an anecdote they heard on the radio. it's tough in cork being in the south and a min of 3 hours away from Dublin (comedy central). These guys will gg only if you have a good budget which turn comes down to a good PR.
So in all, how's about we get together and start a big PR war. We'll make shit loads of money which will fund the PR which will then bring the comedians which will increase the PR fund thus creating more money. To be honest I think this is one pyramid scheme that will work :p
By the way, pat when's the new club coming together, I don't know if you mentioned it earlier in your posts.

yes, I go to comedy gigs but my repertoire and experience of comedy especially when it comes to organisation spans quite a few years and not just in Cork ;)
To be honest though, it's quite obvious to see how the clubs operate. You just need to see how organised they are before a show, how many peeps are out flyering and the comedians involved.
I'm a comedy whore :p

I spend a simple 6 hours in the toilet with constipation, and look what happens, ye all start writing. Right here goes with my cents worth.
Rebelangel2008, I'm inclined to agree with you, I really don't know if Cork can sustain another comedy club, as it is I don't think Cork can even sustain one club. Sooooooooooo sorry to hear you had some bad nights at the Craichouse, now compare that to the number of bad nights I had there, believe me I had way more bad nights than most people. But on the flip side I had some fantastic nights as well, which I will explain later.
There are at least 26 comedians in Cork, with another 5 on the way, so lets look at this from the comedians point of view.
Any comedian starting off must get as many gigs under his/her belt in order to improve their craft. So you start applying to comedy clubs all over Ireland and more so here in Cork. Some clubs will tell you the waiting list is roughly 6 months, others wont even reply because your new so they don't know you. I couldn't even imangine the waiting list for City Limits, but for some it's too far away. So you finally get an open spot lats say Dublin or Galway, this means you pay your own transport, accommodation, food and drink, just to do 7 minutes, yes 7 minutes. When it's all over your told that yes they would love to have you back in say 5 months for another 7 minute open spot. This can go on for over a year, unless you know somebody.
Now 2 clubs in Cork might, just might mean an offer of an open spot, so your up against every other comedian in the entire country for that open spot. Now fair due's to Cyprus Avenue, they are fantastic in the support of Cork comedians, they will give them the chance, but their not on every month.
If we have just two comedy clubs, well the 26 Cork comedians would be cut down to about 7 comedians, and the new 5 would never happen. Many of the 1st division comedians got their introduction to the Cork audience through these small venues, some after so many gigs at these small venues came to the attention of City Limits, and they got their big break.
Without these small venues I wouldn't have had the extreme pleasure of hearing some 1st class comedians, I would be like so many others who believe that if it's not Tommy Tiernan or Karl Spain, then it's not funny. I dare anyone to say that when the like's of Daniel Cahill took to the stage, that they didn't laugh and find him very funny, or the madness of Ross Browne.
Yes there have been some shit nights, but if they were always fantastic nights you would have been charged a lot more than just €5. Starting another comedy club in Cork was never my intention, after I got f**ked over by the Craichouse, I actually decided to just get back to my writing and finally have time to accept the offers of gigs I had.
I'm not in it for the money ( otherwise the Craichouse would have one hell of a bill in the post) I do understand how given a chance can make a difference to people, I got it from Des and Brian at City Limits as well as Dave McSavage and Cyprus Ave, which is why there will be another comedy club in Cork, to give even more people the "chance" to try out something that they will enjoy, make friends from, and for a very very few, actually make a living from.
So can Cork sustain another comedy club, it has no choice, the alternative is like the Craichouse on a very poor quite night, not pretty.

Fair enough answer. How were u f**ked over by the craichouse and will the comedians who run that show also going to be involved in ur new enterprise??

The Laughing Langers Comedy Club will launch it's regular Midleton comedy nights in McDaids, Main St , Midleton, on Thursday 21st August. A full list of times and performing comedians will be posted shortly.
We will also be presenting an excellent comedy night in the Roundy Bar, Castle St, on Sunday 31st August, with Peter Carroll (mind reader) and Pauline Curtin, this will be a really good night ( it must be, some seats are already booked out, that's a first even for me) full details will be posted shortly.
We will be bringing regular comedy nights on Fridays from the Swan Bar on Drawbridge St. begining in September, so keep an eye out.
The launch of our main Cork city venue, upstairs in the "Swan Bar", Drawbridge St will take place on Friday 12th September ( as stated last month)
We are now taking bookings from comedians interested in performing at the Laughing Langers Comedy Club. Any interested comedians can contact me through PROC or langerated@gmail.com . As our main ethos is to support new and upcoming comedians, interested parties should not be concerned about their possible lack of experience.
We will also be shortly running work shops on an "Introduction to Stand up Comedy", this will be aimed at people who might be interested in doing stand up, interested parties can contact me through the above stated contacts.
The Laughing Langers will be a small club where the main interest will be on everyone having fun, our motto " a lot of laughs for a little money".
In finishing can I just say a big thank you to everyone for your support with regards to recent events, some of the Cork comedians were really great as were the Many Dublin comedians, your support will not be forgotten.
THE LAUGHING LANGERS,,,,WHERE IT'S OK TO BE A LANGER.
