State agencies are going to come under greater scrutiny now that the economy is slowing down and the government's pot is smaller. We all know about inefficiencies in the public sector from people we know who work there and various stories we've heard.

One thing that bugs the life out of me is wastage on websites. Web companies are charging state agencies outrageous prices.

We're supposed to be trying to become a nation imersed in science and technology and when you look at something like www.science.ie that purports to be the country's showpiece for that subject it troubles me greatly.

This bland, unattractive, text based site that would make a linux fan club site look exciting seems like it has been designed in the 30-day trial version of dreamweaver by a sixty year old woman on a fás back-to-work scheme who has severe glaucoma. We are talking about a website that is supposed to be the showpiece for the nation's scientific endeavours, something which is going to make or break for our economy in the next 20 years.

Whoever's responsible for that should be held accountable for a monunmental waste of money, not to mention all the kids who have not been inspired (yet again) by those telling them science is exciting.

Be in no doubt that there's probably close to €20,000 of tax payers money being slung at this every year with some bullshitting web design company salesman holding meetings in fancy offices with a hapless and lazy government agency pawn, firing buzzwords at them until they submit to the ludicrous proposal.

www.science.ie is an embarrassment to the nation and anyone involved in science or engineering.
