The death has been announced of former Fianna Fáil Government Minister Seamus Brennan.
Mr Brennan resigned as a Government Minister following the departure of Bertie Ahern as Taoiseach earlier this year.
He was 60 years old.

Seamus Brennan was one of the small number of Fianna Fail politicians that I liked. He came across as likeable and honest. Perhaps he was too honest for his own good because he made enemies during the Haughey era and without that he may even have come to lead his party.

listening to myles dungan on the radio this morning during tributes paid to brennan. Apparently he had a similar telephone number to brennan in sth dublin and got a string of threatening phone calls during one of the heaves against charlie haughey.
Although he was a loyal party man, i'd say brennan was well aware of the dangers haughey and his thugs posed to democracy in this country. Like almost all the anti-haughey FFers, he should be considered something of a patriot.

Its unfair to define him with regard to the Haughey era when that was so long ago. You could see that decision as purely political or genuine belief that Haughey was bad for Ireland so I wouldn't use that to judge him.
The former head of the Road Safety Authority resigned in part because he couldn't get on with Martin Cullen, the new Transport Minister at the time. He said Seamus Brennan had been much more practical and straight forward to deal with and for me he always came across that way on TV.
When I heard that it shone a light on Brennan. He also lacked the PR bullshit image of Cullen and his ilk which I'd respect.

I think the well publicised fears and heaves of the anti haughey FFers did enough to ensure that after 1981, Haughey never obtained a government majority. Aside from the vote early and often FF muck savage electorate, very few floating voters would have voted for this guy as they couldn't trust him. the heaves by decent FFers (there's always a few) would have contributed to that feeling. Maybe patriotic is too strong a word, but he certainly did the country some service.
