Especially by English tabloids/commentators in retrospect. Can't say I ever heard him called La Bestia back then.

Salinas was first choice for Spain for years, including the whole 1994 WC.

I can't remember anybody being picked specifically against Ireland, and I would be familiar with that Spain side alright.

He was pure class as a defender. Ferguson was very close to bringing him to
O.T. but Bobby "Prat" Robson played Nadal in a U.E.F.A. game which f...ed
up the transfer.
Typical "Britshit" from the tabloid scum and moronic commentators! 8)

P.S. October 1993 Rep Of Irl 1-3 Spain in a W.C. qualifier. Nadal dribbled out from defence and the Lansdowne Road
faithful gave him a massive ovation.

Will always be remembered in Spain for missing a "sitter" against Italy in the
Q.F. which caused Spain's elimination. Less so for having 2 legitimate goals
disallowed against England at Wembley in the Euro 96 Q.F.
Used to score plenty against "lesser/middle sides" but couldn't do it against
the "big boys". 8-)

No more than that.He was no Alan Kernaghan, that's for sure.

Edit: as for Spanish players I remember from that era: Zubizaretta, Michel and Butragueno (I think he was still playing) from the 89 team. Then in the 90's encounters you had Miguel Nadal, Luis Enrique, Beguristain (I think), Jose Bakero, Julio Salinas... erm... I'm struggling to name more.

-AmadeusDC-Fuck it, yeah. Can't believe I forgot Hierro. I know there are others who I can't think of off the top of my head. Just watched youtube footage of the World Cup qualifier in Seville in November 92. Surprised that Michel and Butragueno were still playing.

Wasn't there a goicochea(Spelling clueless) on the team around then as well(nippy winger if I remember). As well gotta give a shout out for Zubizaretta(spelling again) an institution in the spanish goal. Also the man with the cool name Caminero....at least it sounded cool when I was a kid anyway

When the LA Liga highlights were on TnaG in the mid 90's I had the commentator as my Irish teacher in Spioraid Naoimh in Bishopstown. He used to absolutely love saying Caminerooooooooooooo oo whenever the guy had a shot on goal. Hint of a Cork accent shining through in the 'ner' part in the middle too. More of a NYER with a Cork emphasis on it. Have never forgotten the player because of that. Getting to watch Football in Irish class was brilliant! -AmadeusDC-

A couple of others from the 92-94 team that I inexplicably forgot are Guardiola and Abelardo and from the 88-90 team: Manuel Sanchis, the great Real Madrid centre back, and Rafael Martin Vazquez.

Shit- I'd like to clarify there- I was talking about Salinas, not Nadal who was a fine player in his day.

On players- Ferrer, Jose Luis Caminero, Guardiola, Hierro, Sanchis- I can probably rattle off a few more if I think about it.

Of course, not all of them featured against Ireland.

:-D
Immediatley after that game, which Ireland were very unlucky not to win,
Javier Clemente dropped all the Real Madrid "idols" for lack of workrate. It
was a very different Spain that came to Lansdowne Road in Oct 1983.
Charlton "bottled it" and played a 4-5-1 formation which the players weren't
used to as it was the first time. Spain played a 3-3-3-1 formation and pissed
all over us.
Lucky for us that Fernando Hierro did us a favour against Denmark the same
evening that we struggled to get a point at "Windshit" Park Belfast! 8)

Alan Kernaghan > Mick McCarthy???
Julio Salinas was no world class striker but he "cleaned A.K. out" at
Lansdowne Road in October 1993!

Wasn't there an amazing save from a young Canizares as well though, after Zubi had been sent off? I was watching that match with a Madridista who spent most of it abusing Hierro who wasn't playing great; then he scored and all was forgiven!!!!

Your are thinking of camionero probably and anyway Castillian Spanish is
the correct form unlike the "scouse spanish" that is spoken in a lot of
places in Latin America!
Caminero comes from the verb caminar = to walk.
