how, when the olympics has such an amateur ethos, can pro soccer players be allowed to play?

i mean if thats the case then why aren't pro boxers allowed to enter? and to be honest i can't imagine any of the big name sprinters aren't pro's either

For the record - Each nation must submit a squad of 18 players, 15 of which must be born on or after 1 January 1985. Men's teams are allowed to augment their squad with three players over the age of 23.

I've often wondered this too. Every single one of the elite track and field athletes is a full time professional I'd say. Also Tennis, Soccer, Basketball etc. I always wonder therefore why Boxing is non professional only. Actually are there any other sports in the Olympics that are fully amateur in the games but where a somewhat lucrative professional enviornment exists outside of them as it does with Boxing. Please don't say Wrestling ;) :D

pro wrestling is not a sport, nor is that a debate for this thread

Do many people actually give a fuck about the Olympics in general?

Do baseball pros play in the Olympics? Don't know. Also figure skaters might be amateurs? I don't think there's any significant paid competitions, but a lot of them leave competitive skating to go to shows like Disney on Ice.

By the way, I just learned that "Lifesaving" is a recognised Olympic sport. You have to dive down to a pool or the seas and drag up mannequins or something.
