View Full Version : Has Wenger ever sold a player who's then improved at another club?

I'm thinking more about players who were regular first teamers rather than the likes of David Bentley who had never made the breakthrough.
It sems to me that he gets good players to over-achieve and without his mentoring they will regress when they go elsewhere.

Bentley & Pennant (to a lesser degree - he was highly effective in his last season at Bongo FC)

Kanu is doing a good job at Pompy without really improving, Flamini could be one.

Agree 100%.

I was making a point about Wenger's teams suffering at times from being overcoached back when they were still winning silverware.

When Plan A works well, it's dynamic and unstoppable.

When it's cracked, his teams careen into brick walls it can take them half a season or more to get around.

In fairness to Fergie, he's done the cracking more than once in his tussles with Wenger but he has the advantage of having better individuals to work with most seasons.

There are a quite a few, in addition to what's been mentioned, Sylvinho, Van Bronckhorst, Boa Morte, Manninger, Volz, would be the key ones. Cygan has done well at Villarreal, and golden oldie Pires (although nearing the end) has had a brilliant season at the same club.

If Fabregas goes to Barcelona he will improve as well!

sylvinho - sold due to passport irregs.
van bronc - sold due to fabregas poaching
boa morte - sold due to being shit
manninger - sold due to being heart broken
volz - sold on because his fitness wasnt up to the other right/left backs
Cygan - sold because villareal tought they were getting walcott after watching the tapes.
Pires - left after the champions league final kick in the stones.

Yeah. I should have said that I don't think any of these moves hurt Arsenal one bit. All had to go for one reason or another. And when it comes to really big players- Overmars, Petit, Vieira, Henry, Anelka- none have managed to scale the same heights after leaving. The only mistake he's made in the market for me is selling Vieira and Henry a year too late, after the rot had already set in, for lower fees.

That's a very minor criticism though.
