Do you consider the lads leaving the GAA to pursue a career in the AFL traitors to Ireland and is money is their only god?

traitors is a bit strong.
but they definitely walked out on their Country.
It could cause some dilema with this 6 Billion on the books, and some guys thinking about earning a few quid.
It shouldn't really approach the same level as rugby union / rugby league before professionalism, ..but there'll be a few.

Well Einstein, care to explain how you equate an amateur sportsman seeking to follow a professional career with a professional sportsman or woman walking out on their country in their time of need?

Surely they know what they are signing up to when they become inter county players and therefore embrace the 'code' of amatuerism. Since the AFL tend to recruit the top players, who are important members of their respective squads, aren't they walking out on both their team and their country.

no you twat, i'm implying that they know exactly what they're getting into when they play GAA i.e. the amatuer ethos.
yet if money comes a knocking via the AFL they jump ship

the modern day intercounty player is only amateur in name, everything surrounding their approach to the game is professional.
therefore when they are given the opportunity to do this full time and get properly compensated for it of course they 'jump ship' - would you decline the offer?

Simple,to get the chance to train and play full time. Aussie Rules is not the premiership when it comes to earning. If you honestly think they all go hoping to make big bucks "long term" then you're only showing yourself up here.
Who in their right mind wouldn't want to go kicking a ball in 30 degree sunshine every day of the week instead of sitting in an office all day, going home, getting your gear ready and heading out the door again to be down in Pairc Ui Caoimh or Pairc Ui Rinn for half 7 on a wet tuesday in February?

I'm not saying I wouldn't, the point of the poll was to highlight that certain individuals launch a character assassination on people from other codes for 'moving for money, or switching to represent a country for a nothing competition while stating that in all serious competitions she would represent Ireland.
A certain portion of these people are GAA Heads who then turn a blind eye to GAA players switching to the AFL

i dont think you can make the comparsion because the roys/sonias etc that you refer to are professionals through and through.
as RR said our intercounty players leave in the hope of breaking through sure but its the lure of training full time and being able to call themselves professional sportsmen thats more of an attraction.
read somewhere recently the average AFL player earns between 200-400k a season,a rookie would be on 80k roughly (AUSD)
and its 38C degree heat!;)

a fair point, though i'd disagree with you on the professional sportsman persona, as as far as i can see they're already treated as such in Ireland (hero Status)
But for these so called GAA purists who populate this forum, wouldn't it be considered as traitorous. Walking out on the game etc.

God there wasn't a week went by last year when I was down there without one AFL player getting in trouble with the cops!! SHower of knackers!!
As for the question at hand, I think its great that a young lad here can head down and have a shot at earning a living as a pro sports player, regardless of the code.

not to mention the trouble wayne carey currently finds himself in...

Be prepared to be surrounded by ridiculous hype with the AFL for the next 6 months.
Its mental!!! Couldn't get into it myself, although I did watch a few games.
Home since end of january, left melbourne at the beginning of december. I assume you're in St KIlda???

God they were shocking last year, although they signed Chris Judd over the winter so could be better this year. Had a soft spot for Essendon purely cos it was teh first place I stayed in melbourne, but they were shite last year as well.
Used to work just off commercial road, know it well! Nice area, chapel st is great. Go to Prahran market and the crabapple cupcake bakery, you won't be disappointed......

i know only too well about the bakery!:)
yeah nice area alright,happy out.
optimism is high at the club heading into the new season, certainly due to the judd factor, nearly 15000 turned out recently for a practice game in which he made his debut,he goaled towards the end and the roar that received it wouldnt be out of place at the grand final.
oh an essendon supporter..boo..hiss ...apparently theres no love lost between both sets of supporters, playing round 3/4 at the g,must get a ticket.
i know only too well about the bakery!:)
I'd give anything for a few of those bad boys now I can tell you.
Grill'd burgers as well, although I'm sure you've had them by now.
Just about the only things I really miss about Melbourne.
At the end of the day the GAA is a community based organisation, so it has to be a no.
If a player joins another community, he will sign up with the new club.
..if a few lads want to go away to another Country for a few years they are no longer part of the community at the time. ...so it's no biggie..
..no contracts signed or anything.
