Piquet will spring a surprise - you'll see.

Didn't Piquet cause the first corner crash? (I've seen a brief highlight, was he the car on the far inside?)

I see Adam Carroll won the A1GP race, cue those confused by the rugby team to debate why he's driving for the Irish team...

Honda were much improved. Was that just a fluke, or is Ross Brawn just that good. We'll found out over the summer, but my money is on the latter.

Bourdais did well. He's taken a long time to get to F1, and there is a fair bit of history with those coming from the States series' struggling in F1, so good to see him doing well.

BTW, for all his colourful language, Coulthard was solely to blame for his off.

was at the race sunday and it was great, fantastic atmosphere even though we were baking in the heat.

bmw look even closer to the top two than last year which can only be good, toyota have definitely improved and williams particularly rosberg should also feature this year.

used to watch it religiously during the 90s but interest waned last few years.

last season was good and sundays race was eventful, taking away drivers aids will make it much more watchable - "award driver skill, punish driver error."

The lack of traction control is going to be brilliant. The quality of drivers out there this season is the best in a long while I think, Bourdais and Vettel are going to be excellent. Was dissapointed with Kubica's race pace, what happened there? I just wish there was a driver out there who had a bit of Charisma and a bit of madness. I just cant take to Lewis, he is a fantastic driver and he will win multiple world titles but what is it about him that I cant like, it was the same with Schumacher Snr. Maybe i just like the underdog.
I need a driver to support but theres nobody doing it for me since Montoya left......help...... driver commendations welcome...

yeah liked montoya too,his driving style and personality.

to be fair to kimi he gave me one of my best f1 moments - happened 2 seasons ago at schumachers final race, interlagos, ther e was a presentation prior to the warm lap made by pele to the german, afterwards martin brundle while doing his grid interviews asked kimi what he thought of it all, kimi said he didnt know what had happened he was too busy taking a shit!

Christ ya I remember that it was feckin priceless....said in his usual expressionless fashion as well. Not the kinda quote you get everday in F1. If only we got to see more of the piss head Kimi more often.....taking his lad out in lap dancing clubs and ending up naked in a residents garden next to the Monza track....Kimi is a bit of a mad fecker alright.

BBC have won the rights to F1 from ITV starting next year.

No commercials, and skyplus as well.

From planet F1:

BBC wins back Formula One rights
Thursday 20th March 2008

F1 will return to the BBC from the 2009 season after the corporation secured a five-year television rights deal, it was announced today.

Twelve years after ITV won the rights and began broadcasting the sport, the BBC have managed to bring Formula One back in a major coup for the organisation.

Bernie Ecclestone, chief executive of Formula One Administration Limited, said: "I am delighted to conclude this new deal with the BBC.

"I wish to thank ITV for their commitment to Formula One and the high quality of their coverage.

"It is an exciting time in Formula One and the BBC has some innovative new ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fanbase."

BBC Sport director of sport rights Dominic Coles said on BBC Sport online: "The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years.

"We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC.

"F1 is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting.

"Fans will be able to enjoy uninterrupted, state of the art and innovative coverage from BBC Sport, across all of our TV, radio and new media platforms, for the first time since 1996."

Will be interesting to see who the BBC have as their presenters, theres talk of Richard Hammond from top gear being invloved anyway. That would be good. Cant stand Steve Ryder.
Strange that ITV have given it up though especially since their viewers are up 40% for each race since Hamilton has arrived on the scene. I assume they have ditched it to allow them put some bobs into getting champions on ITV from next year?

Setanta.

Four guys in room in Dublin watching the race on TV and talking about what they can see while reading out emails from "fans" in Mullingar and Clonmel asking "why has the Ferrari got hubcaps?"

Then a commercial break.

I too have Setanta, but I never watch their F1 "coverage," on it.

I can't wait for it to be back on the beeb.

They had it in 2002 and 2003, with all of the features you mention, but they didn't get the viewers to justify it. It was pay per view, so maybe if it was on Sky Sports 1 they might get people to watch it.

This is an article announcing it:

Formula One goes interactive on Sky Digital
Monday, January 28 2002, 04:56 GMT

By Neil Wilkes, Editor

A new service broadcasting live and interactive Formula One Grand Prix coverage is to launch on Sky Digital.

The service will run across all three days of each Grand Prix weekend in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, providing live in-depth coverage of each Race and all Practice and Qualifying sessions through a range of interactive options. The new F1 season begins in Australia on the first weekend of March.

On Race day, viewers will be able to see live uninterrupted race coverage, choose from a range of alternative views, access a stream of statistics and gain exclusive access behind the scenes of the Grand Prix. During Qualifying and Practice, viewers will be able to choose between different live feeds, view race preparations and access key highlights.

All Sky Digital households will be offered the interactive F1 service on a pay-per-view basis, with a one-off fee for each 3-day Grand Prix weekend. More details of charges and lineups are to be announced in the coming weeks.

"We are so pleased to be working with Sky and excited that F1 can now offer British viewers such radically different coverage. It has taken time, with F1 investing heavily in the best broadcast technology so we can genuinely take fans closer," said Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One Management. "Now, alongside traditional race broadcasts, we can offer truly interactive coverage of Grand Prix weekends. It's going to be exceptional."

"Formula 1 followers are amongst the most technically aware of all sports fans, and they will be excited by this new service - the depth of the information now available, and the choice of how to watch every race," said Vic Wakeling, Managing Director of Sky Sports. "The interactive experience we have gained since the launch of Sky digital also allows us to work together to enhance and develop the service still further over the next couple of seasons. This is the future, and it is available now. The frustration of having to sit passively in front of a television set - wanting to know more, wanting to see something different - will be a dark and distant memory."

i bought the first 3 races at the premium price rather than the season ticket deal and it was crap. they didnt know what they were doing.
especially considering wasnt that the first full f1 season without murray walker and mika hakk?

they did have shit camera coverage. look at how the soccer has evolved since then and the multiple games on the one channel etc and the way f1 has embraced listening into team orders and drivers etc.

twould be a whole new ball game. but key to its success would have to be skysports 1

What an awesome race. Loved every moment(apart from the moment the great World champ decided to ram poor Sutil). Hamilton would have even lapped Raikkonen if it were not for the Rosberg crash. And if it were not for the Rosberg crash Sutil would never have been rammed by Raikkonen. But C'est La Vie.

The bad luck of Heikki continues. When will that guy get a clean run eh?
Nice to see Kubica overtaking Massa after the pit stops. Ferrari thought they had it so that was sweet. But overall it was an exciting(yes I used that word) race. Roll on Canada in two weeks.

Nobody was rammed. Did you see the race? As Raikkonen came out of the tunnel he was travelling at 181 mph. You could see the wet patch on his right hand side, and you could also see the car begin to fishtail as soon as he hit it. If he braked then, he would have locked the wheels and ploughed into the back of sutil as sutil braked for the chicane, so he tried to steer into the skid and get the back wheels to grip. Then when he did regain control, Sutil had (rightly) begun his braking for the chicane. It was an unavoidable racing accident, so to say that the World Champion "rammed" the Force India car and thus put himself further behind in the World Championship Title Race is simply incorrect.

Monaco is a good circuit, and because of it's history and heritage, it deserves its place on the calendar. I've enjoyed it myself when I've travelled there for the Grand Prix. But to be honest, when you mix rain and a tightly twisting street circuit, and add over twenty F1 cars each capable of over 300 Kph (all set up for dry qualifying on saturday by the way), then you have a recipe for a lottery.

And yesterday, while exciting, was a lottery. Most of the mechanics and drivers don't like racing there, (cramped garages, no run off areas, tiny pits) but the sponsors and the business side of F1 love it because of the glamour associated with the Principality and it's Royal Family. Now that it's out of the way for another year, it's back to normal racing in two weeks time.

Singapore and Valencia are newly designed street circuits.
No heritage, no tradition, no glamour, and especially in Singapore, no class.

yes they all that but they also very much street races. singapore will have the nighttime thing all about it and valencia well, valencia has nothing going for it except being a street race.

there wont be much run offs in either of them like so expect some more of the same. i love street races. i find a street race better than most of the track races. only down side is no rain or errors and you get fuck all passing etc really.

Surprisingly quick around a street circuit. That is the only place, realistically to overtake in Monte Carlo. Do you remember the time that Senna and Mansell had their famous dice there back in the 1992?

That was real racing, with two experienced drivers driving reasonably equally matched cars:

Mansell was leading when he got a puncture. Ended up behind Senna. Senna brake tested him for 10 laps. Old Nige had to be lifted out of the car at the end.....he was fucked after it.

Pure class.

There is a Senna Monaco lap somewhere on the interweb, where he more or less claims he had an out of body experience driving it. He regularly took pole by more than a second / second and a half there.

In fairness to Hamilton, he is pretty good.

wheel to wheel racing. mansell was better in the corners for the whole race but senna had the speed on the straights. think i fell asleep half way through only to be woken without about 5-6 laps to go.

Senna was superb. Mansell, Senna, and Prost all raced against each other with reasonably similar cars. Where would you get three World Champions racing now? Raikkonen, and Alonso have vastly different cars, and
neither of them are anywhere near the standard of Senna or Mansell.

Hamilton might be as good as Hakkinen in a few years time. Try to distance yourself from the British Media Hype: Remember Damon Hill? And more recently Jenson Button?

The problem with a lot of these new guys is that they lack race craft, the ability to race each other. They can put in fast laps ok, but can't race ( just like Hill). Raikkonen came straight from F3 ffs. Thankfully this year seens to be bringing racers to the fore, I reckon because of the lack of TC. Hamilton appears to be capable of making a pass. It's also put Kubica streets ahead of Heidfeld.

I did have high hopes for Glock as he had a fantastic F2 season last year.......but he's clearly shite.

cant wait to see the cars driving under the stand. Imagine sitting right above it feeling the vibrations under your hole.
i actually think its going to be a cracking place to have a race. I presume in the park areas theyll do run offs like a normal track but in the city it will be barriers. Imagine the money they charging for them stand tickets.

Ill be there in that stand! Cant fucking wait!

And everybody avoided it because............. .??????

And everybody avoided it because............. .??????

Possibly because they were happy to parade around in a procession, but Raikkonen was racing.

Sutil reminds me of Andrea De Crashiris from years back. Himself, Piquet Jr., and Bourdais should be made pre qualify on their own on thursdays from now on, and Bourdais went straight over that chicane twice on consecutive laps earlier in the race, as did DC who actually lives in Monaco, and drives that road every day!

Sutil: The Human Chicane.

It was a schoolboy error. If you are driving a slow car and the world champion is behind you, then you should at least be looking in your mirrors approaching chicanes.

Kimi is not the best driver in my opinion, but to say that he rammed Sutil is factually incorrect. That implies that it was deliberate, it was a racing accident, that's what happens in Motor Racing.

still very disappointing for sutil who had a fine race to that point.

is massa world champion material?

in saying that he raced poorly sunday, taking away hamiltons slice of good fortune he still lost out to kubica (who imo is the future not lewis.)

I think this year is tougher for him but still. Kubica and rosberg are good drivers. As for massa? i think hes capitalising on kimi being off form than actually being better than him,

not doubting lewis for a minute, superb temperment, champions hip winning temperment, just think we will be treated to a few fascinating years to come with the duel between him and kubica,my main hope for f1 is that bmw continue to improve and we will get at least three teams challenging at the top of the grid.

i have both model cars scale 1:18 from that race. They released limited edition runs. Fucked up though. took them out of the boxes and threw the boxes away. theyd be worth a few hundred each now.

the cars look so different back then even though youd think they arent. its only when you see the footage now you realised how chunky they look.

Everybody was on here bitching about Kimi "ramming" Sutil at Monaco, when it was an obvious racing accident.

Hamilton ran into the back of him yesterday while he was stopped at a red light waiting to get out of the pits, and yet nobody yet has said anything about that on here.

Y'ere all fantasy fairweather fans and ye get ye're opinions directly from the UK media. Ye all think Hamilton is the dogs bollocks, and ye hate Ferrari.

Well, fuck the whole lot of ye: for me Ferrari will always be the best team in F1.

What a tosser. He should be given a three race suspension until he can learn how to drive.

I looked after Montoya's travelling flag which we passed from race to race starting in 2001- we as a group of fans got to know Juan Pablo and his wife Connie quite well as a result. We had a yearly party/meal each year on the eve of the US GP in Indianapolis which Juan Pablo and his family would attend. Got to meet a lot of cool/loopy fans from south america and had a lot of fun at the USGP.
F1 lost a lot of its appeal when he left, kinda getting back into it again now though. Enjoyed last 2 races.

Look, I know you, and I know you are an intelligent man, but to compare a racing driver losing the back of his car at 270 Kph and hitting the back of the car in front of him while jockeying for position out on the circuit, with some gowl revving the shit out of his car and accelerating away from his pit garage before crashing into a stationary car stopped at a red light at the exit from pitlane makes you sound like you are as thick as two short planks.

Now, as I said, you are intelligent, so the only conclusion I can draw is that the media in England is influencing your opinions, with their "our poor Lewis, sure God love him, he is the best driver out there, and those other Johnny Foreigner types are trying to stop him."

anyone know where i could watch highlights of the race?

by the sounds of the reports ive read sounds a shocker from hamilton, amazed kimi hasnt had a real go,fia should look at a sterner sanction than the ten grid placings at magny cours, second incident this season where hamiltons driving has been called into question - there was that incident earlier in the season where he "mysterically" slowed resulting in alonso crashing into the back of him.

i never accused kimi of any wrong doing at monaco,it was just very unfortunate for sutil who had driven a fine race to that point.

one thing that hasnt been mentioned here yet is the excellent maiden victory for kubica and him now leading the championship race, long may it continue, the win is even more sweeter considering what happened the lad on the same track 12 months prior.

That is about the size of it alright. Him Coultahrd, and Button are good British test drivers. The drivers with flair in F1 at the moment are Massa, Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen, and Kubica. Massa is a good racing driver, but look back over the season, his engine blew up on the last lap, his pit crew held him up twice, and he is still in contention. Hopefully Hamilton will plough into the wall in Interlagos and Massa will win the race and the World Championship.

I can't wait for VW-Porsche-Audi-Lamborghini to enter F1, they've been discussing it for years, to put manners on Mercedes and their cheats. And notice the way the Mercedes safety cars always hold up the Ferraris and let the Mercedes through?

That is about the size of it alright. Him Coultahrd, and Button are good British test drivers. The drivers with flair in F1 at the moment are Massa, Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen, and Kubica. Massa is a good racing driver, but look back over the season, his engine blew up on the last lap, his pit crew held him up twice, and he is still in contention. Hopefully Hamilton will plough into the wall in Interlagos and Massa will win the race and the World Championship.

Ferrari are to consider withdrawing from Formula One if the FIA pursue their aim of a standardised engine.

Motorsport’s world governing body dropped a bombshell 10 days ago when they opened a tender process to standardise both engines and transmissions from 2010 through to 2013.

It is part of FIA president Max Mosley’s cost-cutting drive in F1, however, the ramifications of such a decision were always going to be far reaching.

Following a meeting of Ferrari’s board of directors in Maranello today, the sport’s most famous brand could walk away if Mosley and the FIA do not alter their plans.

A Ferrari statement read: “The board of directors examined the proposed changes to the Formula One regulations in light of the current global economic crisis.

“Whilst reiterating its wholehearted commitment to a substantial and needed reduction in costs in Formula One, starting with propulsion, the board expressed strong concerns regarding plans to standardise engines.

“It felt such a move would detract from the entire raison d’etre of a sport with which Ferrari has been involved continuously since 1950, a raison d’etre based principally on competition and technological development.

“The board expressed the opinion that should these key elements be diminished, it would have to re-evaluate, with its partners, the viability of continuing its presence in the sport.”

Toyota Motorsport president John Howett has today echoed Ferrari’s sentiments.

“I don’t think any of the manufacturers want a homogenised engine,” said Howett.

“The outcome depends partially on the FIA and the World Motor Sport Council, and whether they have a mind to press through with the idea.

“If it is forced through, then it (quitting) is not a decision we will take here (Toyota F1’s base in Cologne).

“It will be taken by the board in Japan, but they want a degree of differentiation between teams.”

Mercedes, Honda, Renault and BMW are the other four manufacturers currently involved in F1, and it is understood they are of the same mind.

The FIA appear intent on pushing through with their plans as they confirmed today the tender process ends on November 7 with regard to bids for engines and transmissions in combination, and bids for the supply of engines alone.

A minimum of three further weeks is to be given to those companies considering transmission-only bids.

It is understood none of the 10 teams involved in the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA) have made a bid, or are likely to bid.

FOTA are to hold a further meeting in relation to implementing cost-cutting measures during the course of this weekend’s season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo.

You know nothing about F1.

Of course it's all about RACE. That's what everybody says: "did you see the race?"

If they make it a standard engine and transmission, then all you will have will be a load of Japanese pieces of shit with a few American buckets of bolts thrown in for good luck.

Meanwhile, BMW, Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault, and all the other top European teams will most likely move to a new formula, or maybe they will join Audi, and Porsche, for the LeMans series.

I wonder how many people will watch Toyota and Honda racing each other round and round and round and round and round in non-places like Dubai, Istanbul, Singapore and Bahrain.

Yawn.....

Kimi Raikkonen has vowed to do all he can to help Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa succeed him as world champion.
Massa is seven points behind British leader Lewis Hamilton in the title race, which will be decided in Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos.
"I'll be glad if I can do something for Felipe so he can win the title," said Raikkonen.
Massa added: "It's a team sport and both me and Kimi know we have to do what is best for the team."
Last season, Massa surrendered the lead at Interlagos to hand Raikkonen victory and the title, by a single point from Hamilton.
Raikkonen returned the favour at this season's Chinese Grand Prix, boosting Massa's title chances by allowing the Brazilian to easily pass him for second place.
On home soil in Brazil, Massa needs to finish first or second to have a chance of denying Hamilton, and is relying on the full support of his team.
"I know there have been comments about me overtaking Kimi in the final stages of that race [China], but they have come from people who don't really understand how the sport works," remarked Massa.
"Psychologically, a racing driver always wants to finish in front, but all drivers have a contract with their team, so you are not racing as an individual.
"When you are fighting for the championship, with only one driver in with a mathematical chance of winning, then all the teams in the pit lane would do the same.
"That is, to put that one driver in a position where he has the best chance of winning. That is part of this sport."
Raikkonen added: "Once you don't fight for the title any more, then for me, it does not make a difference if I finish second or third, as long as the points for Ferrari remain the same.
"I couldn't win the drivers' title this year, but I assure you that I'll try again next year."
In the McLaren camp, Hamilton is maintaining a level-headed approach to the season showdown in Brazil.
Last year the Englishman had taken a seven-point lead to Brazil only to see his title chances evaporate on race day.
After starting second on the grid, he ran wide on the first lap and then suffered a gearbox problem; though he recovered to finish seventh it was not enough to prevent Raikkonen taking the title.
"Last year, without the experience, I was a bit lost," said Hamilton, who is aiming to succeed 1996 winner Damon Hill as Britain's latest world champion.
"This year we go in with a much better approach but, despite that, I don't believe it gives us any reason to get ahead of ourselves.
"We need to keep our feet on the ground and head into the race with the approach we had in China.
"If we are able to do that, then we will be in a great position.
"We know we don't have to win. We just have to do a solid job, and that has to be our target."

1st corner collision anyone?;)

looking forward to this weekend i must say.

as for the cunts who are taking great joy in massa's family going nuts only to realise lewis pipped it at the end. Ye disgust me. Massa is a gentleman. Just so happens i dont like ferrari on a whole and 95% of the time their drivers but this guy is a class act in victory and defeat and didnt deserve to have that happen to him.

but then again neither did lewis. Im still waiting for a breaking news to pop up in sky sports to say hamilton has been stripped of the title due to him farting on the weigh scales and hence somehow being underweight.

I cant believe it. Lewis is a gentleman. Glad i got to see him race in the flesh this year. The first year he won the championship before he went on to dominate it. because hes gona.

Hamilton nearly blew it again

not really. had he stayed on the dry tyres hed have possibly blown it even further. everyone came in so he had to. the risky manovure would be to stay out. he had to match what the all done and to be fair glock was losing just enough to be in with a chance. the spin just saved it.

i feel for massa tonight. especially in the circumstances of the way it ended. I personally dont think f1 has been this good since the jordan days, but then again i had an emotional attachment with the jordans being irish an all.

F1 next year for the neutral could be fuckin fantastic. Anyone could pull a rabbit outta a hat. sure the big teams will be there again but you could see a few surprises. Especially honda who have been just trying to see this season out.

Roll on 09.

fair play naff, would agree with most of that.

great race and a super finish.

gutted in the end for massa, have been a fan of his for the past two seasons in which he has matured as a racer beyond belief imo.

his bahaviour yesterday from start to finish was fantastic, controlled the race throughout and was incredibly gracious in defeat at the end.

cant imagine the emotions he must have gone through in the final minutes - the final 20 seconds of the race.

the glock situation is an interesting one,one that will be debated in the next few days but hopefully not beyond that.

it shouldnt take away from the fact that lewis is the new world champion.

as for next year i cant wait already.

kimis days in F1 could be numbered, has seemed somewhat disinterested in the sport to me at various times this season, might have problems motivating himself following last years win - i dunno.

not sure about lewis dominating the sport though, think the field is as evenly matched as i can remember,of course you will see the ferraris and mclarens towards the front but the bmws made good progress, renault and alonso was excellent in the final third, vettel has massive potential, kubica despite a disappointing finish to the year will be competitive again next season, toyotas were another team who seemed to get better as the season went on and finally honda - ceased all development on the 08 car in preference to working on next years and with ross brawn calling the shots who knows.

one thing for sure - roll on 09 indeed!

It was the best finish to a season I have ever seen. I do feel sorry for Massa losing the title like that, because as mentioned above, he is an absolute gent, but I don't feel like he has the outright pace that a World Champion should have. Saying that, he's a hell of a lot quicker than Damon Hill ever was, and if he won a title then I guess Massa deserves to win a title too. Massa improved and drove so much better this year compared to previous years. Maybe next year he will be quicker again, but it's going to be hard to stop the raw speed of Lewis.

Fair play to Hamilton, he got what he deserved. The look on the Massa family's faces was fecking priceless when the engineer told them he hadn't actually won.!
Massa will have won himself millions of admirers yesterday, he spoke very well of Ferarri, his supporters and Hamilton, he was very gracious in defeat. Fair play to the kid because you dont see this in sport anymore these days. Im sure his day will come.
