Everytime I fly home to Cork on a weekend which admittedly is no more than 4 times a year, I notice that half the flight are wearing Utd shirts and the odd Liverpool shirt aswell. Now assuming most Pool supporters would use Ryanair's service to Liverpool and not fly to Manchester, there seems to be a healthy flow of supporters over here every weekend from Cork. So it got me wondering, how many of the SFI lot here would be amongst the fans that venture over to watch their teams play live. There are obviously those supporting other clubs who make their own pilgramiges too, so lets have it lads, who puts their money where their mouth is and makes the odd trip over here, or is there anyone out there who has a season ticket and spends all his dough on his love of his team. God knows I practically moved here to be closer to Everton, and fortunately my missus is an Evertonian too!

From when I starting earning a wage, I gradually increased going to Liverpool games from twice a season (98 ) to more than 20 in 2002/3, including domestic and European away games. Then I moved to the UK (South Cheshire) and went to over 35 games a season.

Perversely, post Istanbul I started going to less games. A combination of increased ticket prices, increased number of jester hat wearing, camera toting bellends and, greedy, idiotic footballers, meant I'd go to more away games than home.

I had twins in May 2007 (the week of Athens, the premature little monkeys). I went to 4 games this season before moving to Cork in November.

Now, after getting a bit more settled I plan to go over a few times before the end of the season, but more to see my mates than the game. I mightn't even bother getting a ticket and just stay in the pub.

Its a sad state of affairs, considering 10 years ago, I'd gladly spend most of my weekends, and monthly wage, travelling over, shivering at Crewe station at 3am on a February morning. I swore I'd stop going once ticket prices went over £40. Once you add in the £2.50 "administration fee", and the PTS charge, its already over £40 for everywhere except the Kop.

And then you've got some gimp beside you who tries to start Stand up if you hate Man U.

And I'm not even going to start on current goings on.

Whats the point?
Football these days is crap.

You need to change teams fella. Not saying that Everton are the epitomy of how it used to be but at least we dont have the jester hat wearing idiots and the huge groups of tourists taking up swathes of seats and sitting with their cameras at the ready. I love the working class atmosphere that still surrounds Goodison, I love how the ground is enclosed by streets of terraced housing and the smell of the matchday chippies. Its still a bit steep ticketwise with the cheapest seats at £28, but at least we feel the club arent taking the piss out the fans. I agree with you though on the away days, much better atmosphere and a good day out. I sometimes go and watch my local Blue Square prem lge team on a Sunday afternoon, its £5.00 in and the football is actually quite entertaining, sometimes you feel more in touch with the game that captured your imagination all those years ago when you attend these kind of games.

Option 2, though this season has been a lean one due to saving for a house. Been twice this season, 6-8 times most others.

Good man

Utd is more like my favourite TV show.

The sheer scale of the thing makes it hard to feel personally connected with it.

I notice arguing with other Utd fans, I feel little personal connection with the players either. Keane was the only one and, sure, we all know what the story is there.

The rest, Scholes, Ince, Schmeichel, Cantona, they're pros doing a great job for the English club I happened to choose to follow.

It's good craic like and I take great enjoyment from a good Utd performance but...

As is the case with 99% of all football fans today. But I take your point. However supporting a team outside the 'top 3' is different story. You feel closer to the club purely because of your in a minority and you tend to band together etc. Liam2me may be able to associate to this as much as me. With the lifestyle of the players these days however its never going to be easy to have a personal connection with them. That said I bumped into Tim Cahill and Phil Jagielka on Saturday night, had a quick chat with them and they were sound. In the same venue not 30 feet away were Rooney and Giggs, cordoned off and with a personal goon each to allow the dolly birds through. It was pathetic and only goes to show the gulf between these type of players and the general public.

about 5 times a year to Old Trafford....good access to season tickets ........dont have a problem going anytime ...but just to correct a point from the initial post ....Liverpool fans do fly into manchester and vice versa cos it makes financial sense , a bus between the 2 is only £5.50 return...its a good service.
Each to his own though , if a fella would rather watch on telly ...thats fair enough.

Similar to the above, ..without the full-on intensity of the middle section.

..went first in season 87-88, ...then went about once a year up to aged 20 via Crewe at 3am, ..then started to get a bit of cash and went about 5 times a year throughout my 20's and during the 90's.

As the premiership became more and more sterile, and with more stewards etc, I preferred going to away matches and games abroad. ..And as you turn 30 there more important ways to be spending your money. Regular jaunts is a young fella's game.

Now I'd go twice a year to stay topped up.

My first game was Souness' first game as manager, 3-0 v Norwich, so that would make it 91? How little did we know.

Went a couple of more times through the 90's but didnt have the cash til 97/98. To be honest, even before the kids came along, I was cutting down on the amount of games I'd go to, mostly because you were paying £35 or whatever so Riise could get another Porsche Cayenne and I hated a lot of our own fans.

I often wonder if Istanbul was the end of it all. I'd been to 14 of the 17 Champion's League games and had a ball. Previous years I'd been to Ljubjana, Sofia, Auxerre, all sorts of random places and they were brilliant.

The season after Istanbul was completely different. Half of our group couldn't get tickets for away games when they'd been going for years when lads on stags/jester hat wearers travelled en masse and had tickets.

I used to go a good few times every season. I watched the Leeds game last August, but I don't go much anymore.

It's appalling to watch, and annoying being told to 'shut up moaning' by fellow supporters who seem prepared to accept 3rd division football, fat useless players, players playing out of position, negative tactics, clueless substitutions, a keeper not coming for crosses, playing one up front, aimless long balls etc.

Prior to moving to the UK I`d only made it over to Anfield a handful of times (largely due to financial constraints) but have made it to quite (about 8-14 home or away each season) a few games over the last 3 years.

After being in Istanbul in `05 there was a definite feeling amongst many fans that it couldn`t get any better than this. How can you ever manage to attend a game that`ll top it? I think that may be a very small factor in the discontent amongst Liverpool fans currently (playing pants football may however be a larger factor!)

Altrincham in the Prem and Hyde in the Northern Lge. To be fair Hyde is about a 20 min drive from me and Altrincham is near my in laws so I tend to go to which ever's easier at the time.

I try to get to White Hart Lane at least once a year, I even went to an away game this season, as a mate has a season ticket at Old Trafford. Gonna make that a annual trip. Certainly thinking of getting myself a season ticket. very nearly ended up going to Prague this week for the UEFA Cup game. Sold the idea to the doll as a romantic valentine's trip. Couldn't get a match ticket though, so the trip's off. I've a mate in London who is tracking down a Carling cup ticket for me. Supposed to be in Lanzrote with the chick that week, but if a ticket comes up, I'll be heading to wembley

Went to Highbury for the 'last first game of the season' vs. Newcastle. Players were kept away from the fans, although did get to meet Merson & Bob Wilson.

The day before went with a mate to Upton Park for the game vs. Blackburn, sat in the Bobby Moore stand and all. Atmosphere was f**king electric there, got to meet a good few lads there though...apparently the guy on the door to the shop was born in West Cork somewhere or something and let us in.

Lived in Auxerre for a while and have gone back since then for a game or two.....saw a bloody fantastic game vs Ajax in the UEFA Cup couple of years back, needed to win by 2 and they scored in the 87th to make 3-1.....of course they have gone to shi* now, but was still enjoyable.
