Hmmm, it's amazing that two people(or more) can read an article and come away believing different thibgs.
Wenger didn't say he could have signed him.
he said he couldn't have signed him because of manyoo's rlationship with Sporting lisbon.
can you people read?

I've mentioned this years ago here, well before the article above
Maybe Wenger is trying to cover up the fact that he missed out
It's curious that all this comes out while Ronaldo is suddenly the main man, not a few years ago
One thing is for certain, he is 3 times the player he was since he joined

Maybe Wenger "didn't see" him

how did you calculate that exactly please? I want figures to back up that statement

It's pretty obvious Arsenal could have signed him if they really wished
I doubt he was there on holidays

I went back and read a few threads from last year, by the self-proclaimed sports forum experts, who said he was shit
Some of them now feel he good
I then multipled 2 x 6 and divided by 4, giving me 3

All the major clubs (and Arsenal) know about these sort of kids from a very early stage these days.
Around the same time, Arsenal beat us to the signing of Senderos and they haven't looked back since.
He's good but he is a dirty cheating scumbag. Rant over. For now.

Old news.
Can remember when it broke on the forum, some of the ABUs (c) were slamming the Bumslappers (tm) for having paid double what Arsenal (apparently) could have had him for.
Wenger instead went and spunked a moderately higher amount of José Antonio Reyes, who went on to break Henry's scoring record, and hasn't looked back since.

I believe Liverpool had a provisional deal in place to sign Ronaldo but were gazumped by United (by a lot more than 1m pounds). At the time Phil Thompson was shocked to see reports of Utd buying him because he was under the impression that a deal to bring him to Anfield was nearly done.

If he had gone to the Pool, he would possibly be sitting on the bench watching Harry Kewell huff and puff his way through 90 minutes!

If he had gone to Pool, his development would have been curtailed just as every other top talent that club has had in its possession over the past 15 years has failed to maximise his potential.

After he left Liverpool?
Sure.
Their coaching system leaves a lot to be desired despite sitting on one of the few remaining good seams of English talent.

Hmmm.... he started off as a pretty talented wideman. He finished up as the archetypal neat-and-tidy midfielder who rarely left the centre circle. Not saying he can't be happy with his career, but wasn't he supposed to be a bit more than that?

Funny if true
"Thompson also revealed Liverpool were close to signing Cristiano Ronaldo before he joined Manchester United.
"One star who got away in surprising fashion was Cristiano Ronaldo, who shocked us when he signed for Manchester United in 2003, for an astonishing £12m. I say astonishing because we had been offered the player for £4m.
"I was invited to watch Sporting Lisbon play Porto in the last game of the season. Ronaldo was playing for Sporting. Tony Henry, the former Manchester City player and agent, was on the phone on a regular basis to see if he could take us to watch him.
"I met Tony at the airport and travelled to Porto. I met the player's Portuguese agent before watching the game. Ronaldo was quite good, but not as impressive as the first time I saw him. Tony was pushing the boy and saying he was a talent. He was saying: 'He will only cost £4m.'
"He added: 'It can be paid over the course of his contract, £1m a year.'
"He also said that the player wanted £1m tax free. I said: 'The boy is only 18. That is a massive problem,' but Tony suggested it was negotiable.
"I returned back the following day impressed with what I had seen and mentioned it to Gerard. He said: 'I will ask Rick.'
"We had just signed Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec, both on far less than Ronaldo's aspirations. And we would have had anarchy if the other players had found out how much we were considering paying for an 18-year-old kid.
"We looked for a compromise. Ten days later I was sitting in a lounge at Anfield having some lunch and looking at the big TV screen. Up came the news United had signed Ronaldo from Lisbon for £12.2m. Gerard and myself nearly choked on our food.
"Gerard said: 'Contact Tony Henry,' and I went straight out and rang him. I said: 'what happened? More importantly, what happened with the price?' He said: 'After you had been with me, I got a phone call the following week and was told to drop everything on the deal. Hand on heart, I really don't know what happened.'
"I went back and told Gerard the story. What happened, God only knows. For the fee to jump from £4m to £12m, especially as they seemed so desperate, was surprising to say the least."
I think its fair to say Ronaldo may not have turned out the player he is without the guidance of Ferguson.
The problem with Ronaldo is that there's end product but nothing else.
..the Arsenal game is the perfect example, ..pops in a goal and an assist but does fuck all for the rest of the match. ..ditto Porsmouth, ..a couple of goals and fuck all else.
Drop this cunt now!
Ronaldo wouldn't fit into a proper traditional footballing Establishment like Arsenal or Liverpool, these are clubs with proper philosophy and sporting ethos, ManYoo is his level, turning in on against Shite teams and thereby causing Bumslapper to cream themselves, He'll end up at Madrid no doubt, another truly disgusting vile soccer club

reminds me of this classic:
In 1995 Zinedine Zidane may have become another high profile signing for Blackburn Rovers during the Jack Walker era. Kenny Dalglish had wanted to sign both Zidane and Christophe Dugarry who were playing in France for FC Girondins de Bordeaux, however Walker reportedly said to Dalglish: “Why do you want to sign Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”
