View Full Version : Liverpool - A disgrace

Stingy Liverpool have refused to donate their gate money to cash-strapped FA Cup opponents Luton.
The League One minnows are in administration.
And the hard-up Hatters could go bust if they do not find a buyer by 5pm on Monday.
Appeal snubbed
Luton asked the Kop giants to give up their share of tomorrow’s third-round gate, which is around £200,000.
But their appeal was snubbed.
Hatters boss Kevin Blackwell blasted: “They probably said: ‘We have to pay players £100,000 a week. You must be joking! Otherwise we will be like you!
“You just have to accept it. There are people in life who have got a Rolls Royce while some people have a Mini.
“We are Mini drivers. We tried to live like a Rolls Royce but that’s why we are where we are.”
Liverpool refused to comment last night but the Anfield outfit are also facing financial troubles.
Owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have been forced to scale down plans for a new £400million stadium.
And the American tycoons are trying to refinance a £220m loan they took out to buy the club.

I know it's only shillings to Liverpool but Luton's predicament is the fault of Luton and Luton only.
I hope Liverpool give it to charity.

Not while there's football fans whispering into chairmen's ears.
Look at Boro. If they were an actual business, how long would they be sustainable?
They get poor crowds.
They win very little.
They have a history of paying players high wages.
Gibson has been throwing money at every manager he's had with little results.

the only disgrace here is luton,
fuck em,
why should liverpool have to "donate" money to a club that has put itself in that position?
if thats the case then they should start a charity and go cap in hand to all the other clubs in FA cup looking for hand outs,
the next they'll be getting their players to sell the Big Issue at half time,

but the point is that it not Liverpools concern that Luton haven't been able to manage their finances (twice). If your beloved Forest had beaten them in the last round then they wouldn't even have had the opportunity to ask for the money.

It appears to be much ado about nothing, ..the administrator asked the question.
'When asked if the thought had crossed his mind to ask Liverpool to donate their share Blackwell said: "That has been asked by the administrator I believe.
"But they probably said: "We have to pay players £100,000 a week. You must be joking - Otherwise we will end up like you!'
Luton are already doing well with the the Sky Sports TV and BBC radio fees from the game, ..as well as the gate.

How Everton and Liverpool are both allowed develop a new ground each is beyond me. They should build one and share it. There is no logical reason why they shouldn't given the costs of stadia over 60,000.

Luton got themselves in to the mess so it's up to Luton to get themselves out of it. Why should Liverpool hand over their share of gate receipts ? Someone made a great point earlier in the thread, the mortgage on the house one. It's also their second time in admin. if they didn't learn from the first time fuck 'em. Did they ask Forest for the money in the previous round ? Did they ask their league opponents to help out ? Did they fuck, just because it's a big team, they're thinking they have loads of money surely they'll help us out. Liverpool have debts of their own to pay, they have players and other staff to pay, so every penny counts.

Well they couldn't agree on rent in 1892, which was the genesis of LFC in the vacated Anfield.
If there are plans to house both clubs back together again in one ground in the future, then surely the only sensible thing to then do would be to dissolve Liverpool FC and continue as it was back then as only Everton.
Liverpool are only the puppet scabs of that landlord.

Liverpool's plea for financial help from Luton is turned down
Luton have refused a request from Liverpool to donate their share of the gate money from tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round tie to their opponents, despite the Premiership club being in such dire financial straits that they cannot afford to feed their manager.
Liverpool are expected to lose £30m in Champions League revenue for next season, and despite receiving a free stadium from their lovable owners, will struggle to pay off debts incurred through the severance payment to their manager.
Liverpool's captain, Steven Gerrard was reluctant to accept Luton's decision. "It's erm a disgrace, we need it more than they do, Liverpool is a massive massive club, and Chelsea don't want me any more, so its my job on the line. I need the cash to pay for a new set of security guards."
Scouse Hero Jamie Carragher was similarly disgruntled, speaking through a translator, he said "Fuck 'em, we'll just steal it anyway."
Manager Rafael Benitez merely complained about the quality of fast food in Luton, saying the facilities were "A disgrace, there are less than 3 KFC restaurants in this town"
Seriously though, can't see why there was such an outcry

THIS is the flashpoint moment when raging Jamie Carragher lunged at taunting fans – and offered to FIGHT them.
The Liverpool defender lost it over banter by eight Luton supporters wearing curly black wigs and yellow shellsuits like the bickering Scousers from ’90s comedy show Harry Enfield’s Television Programme.
Calm down ... fuming
Jamie Carragher
Like the TV characters, they urged him to “calm down” as he jogged round the pitch with teammates after Sunday’s FA Cup draw at Luton’s ground.
They also hurled remarks about midfielder John Arne Riise’s ginger hair.
Ex-England player Carragher first shouted at the fans, who were in a box on the terraces, from the pitch. But then he leapt up a fence to confront them.
Carragher, 29, screamed obscenities and yelled: “Come on – let’s have it!” Security guards had to drag him away.
Luton fan Michael Sapsford, who was in the box, said: “This is a Premiership star behaving like a thug.”
Plumber Michael, 24, added: “He couldn’t cope with banter in good spirits that hundreds of other players put up with every week.”
No complaint was made after the game – attended by new England boss Fabio Capello.
But a Luton FC spokesman said: “There was a problem being investigated by our safety officer.”

FA Cup heroes Havant & Waterlooville went on a £100,000 bender after their 5-2 defeat at Anfield on Saturday, with Liverpool picking up the tab for the part-time footballers' night of celebrations.
I wonder how Blackwell reacts to this. Heh heh.

I was fucking there, and the London Met were the cause of the delay and crush. There may have been forgeries, I didn't see or hear of any, unlike Athens, when they were all over the place. Thats besides the point anyway, there are always a small amount of people who will try and sell unsuspecting souls forgeries, and the police should be able to control it. The fact is, they had 2 electronic turnstiles to allow 4000 people into the away end. A good proportion of bona fide tickets (including mine, when I eventually got there a good 20 minutes into the game, having arrived at 7:15pm) weren't being read by the scanner, causing delays.
The coppers immediately thought "forgeries", shit themselves. Their immediate action was to close both turnstiles and bring in horses to control the backed up crowd. Now anyone with half a brain would think, maybe bringing huge animals into a crowd of people is not the wisest thing to do.
The cause of the problems were:
1 having just two turnstiles
2 above turnstiles not working properly
3 lack of cordon 50 yards or so from the ground where tickets are checked so no-one without a ticket gets near the turnstiles. Other grounds in Europe even clubs in so-called lesser leagues, e.g Anderlecht, Sofia, Ljubljana, do it, its pretty simple.
4 over anxious policing by the Met's finest, as seen at the Chelsea semi finals in 05 and 07. I heard numerous cops tell people simply, calmly, asking what was going on to "fuck off, you scouse cunt". Lovely.
Mentioning Heysel and Hillsborough in the same sentence just indicates you're absolutely clueless. Been to many games, have you?

There's a place we know where scousers go
and it's always lots of fun
you can have a laugh at many things
if you're ready with a pun
You can mock the dead of Munich
be glad that George Best's dead
you can sing a dozen funny songs
of Duncan Edwards' head
You can hope that Gary Neville
gets cancer and he dies
throw ammonia at Whiteside
and hope it blinds his eyes
You can even stone an ambulance
where Alan Smith is lying
even if it doesn't overturn
it's bound to be fun trying
You can talk of many pleasant things
with your like-minded mates
but you'll pause to show such reverence
as you pass the Shankly Gates
Where every single scally
who ever passed away
must be honoured and respected
have their own special day
Cos scousers are a special breed
their hearts upon their sleeve
they ask the country to join in
and watch them as they grieve
They celebrate and they respect
each liverpudlian who departs
they ask that we can shed their tears
and nurse their broken hearts
Yet mention dead of anyone
who doesn't fit their own
they laugh out loud there is no shred
of honour ever shown
They laugh at young men dying
on runways filled with ice
and celebrate that Munich day
and never would think twice
of mocking Harold Shipman's dead
that lived in another city
these wallowers in plastic grief
the masters of self pity
They wave their tin foil silverware
and throw cups filled with shit
to shower on opposing fans
but never will admit
the murder of their very own
their much loved Stanley knives
the night they killed Juventus fans
a tragic waste of lives

It's grieving for 'poor' Michael Shields
but not for Heysel dying

Gerrard arrested in assault probe
Steven Gerrard
Gerrard scored twice in his team's 5-1 win on Sunday
England and Liverpool footballer Steven Gerrard has been arrested following an alleged assault.
Police were called at about 0230 GMT following a disturbance at a restaurant in Southport, Merseyside. Six men were detained later in a nearby street.
The men, four from Huyton, one from Formby and one from Litherland, remain in police custody.
A 34-year-old man from Southport was taken to hospital with facial injuries, not thought to be life-threatening.
The incident is alleged to have taken place at the Lounge Inn, on Bold Street, a restaurant and late night music venue.
Goal scorer
Four men aged 33, 31, 29 and 19, all from Huyton, a 28-year-old from Formby and an 18-year-old from Litherland were arrested a short time later on nearby Lord Street.
Midfielder Gerrard, 28, is Liverpool captain and scored twice in his team's 5-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday.
A police spokesman said: "Merseyside Police is investigating an assault that took place in the early hours of Monday December 29 on Bold Street in Southport.
"At around 2.30am this morning officers attended a disturbance at a licensed premises on Bold Street.
"Six men were arrested on suspicion of section 20 assault, on Lord Street."
The spokesman added all six currently remained in custody. It is believed no other Liverpool footballers are among those being held.
Gerrard was born and grew up on Huyton's Bluebell Estate.
Last month the Premier League star was given the freedom of his home borough of Knowsley in recognition of his contribution to football.
Liverpool FC said it would not be commenting.
Oh Stevie.
Be interesting to see if charges are pressed against him. I reckon its all a storm in a teacup but i suppose we will see in the next few days.

Presuming that this "issue" doesn't impact his availability it's more likely to affect his performances positively than negatively...as we've seen in the past from the likes of Cantona & Barton (to a certain degree).
That said Gerrard has not been charged or found guilty of a single thing so it's unfair to tar him with the same brush as those convicts.

from an evidential perspective it can be tricky to get a conviction for the offence of affray, under irish legislation anyway. i presume the english statute is very similar.
gerrard will probably say that he was gettin some stick and his actions were not unlawful but in 'self defence'. i would expect lots of witnesses to vouch.
its easier to get a conviction on an assualt charge. if its simple assault then its a minor enough matter as opposed to assault causing harm.
overall id expect the cross complaints to be dropped with money, i mean compensation exchanging hands

Dalglish breaks disaster silence :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/merseyside/7921890.stm
Football legend Kenny Dalglish has broken his 20-year silence on the Hillsborough disaster, saying that the kick-off should have been delayed.
Ninety-six fans were crushed to death at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium as Liverpool took on Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup semi-final on 15 April 1989.
Dalglish, who was manager of Liverpool at the time, said it was something "nobody should forget".
He said police and the FA should have considered delaying the match.
The crush happened when Liverpool fans who had not got into the ground by the time the game kicked off were allowed into an already-crowded section of terracing at the Leppings Lane end of the ground.
Supporters at the front of the terrace were pushed against metal fencing, which at the time was a common feature of English football stadiums to prevent pitch invasions.
Many fans tried to escape by climbing over the fence or being pulled up by other supporters in to the upper tier. In addition to the 96 who died, several hundred were injured.
The game was stopped after six minutes.
Dalglish, who also played for Liverpool for many years, as well as Celtic and Scotland, said: "The easiest thing to do is just to put the kick-off back a bit. That's no problem for anybody.
"If the police are talking to the FA and the FA have got to make that call, there wouldn't have been any resentment or disagreement with the people in the dressing room, neither Brian Clough [the Nottingham Forest manager at the time] or ourselves certainly.
"It's something that everybody wished had never happened but I think it's also something that nobody should forget."
He added: "We made sure somebody with Liverpool connections was at every funeral and I think the families really respected that.
"The boys weren't obtrusive in any way, they sat back and let the families get on with the grieving but they were there, their presence was there, but they didn't need to have anybody coming up and telling them how grateful they were to have been there, they were there because they wanted to be there."
Dalglish was interviewed for a programme to mark the 20th anniversary of the disaster, the first time he has spoken on camera about the events.

Really Kenny. Should have been delayed :?:
Why :?:
The majority of Forest fans were in the stadium at 1:00pm.
It was drunken, ticketless Scousers who bombarded the ground at 2:50pm.

My allegance do not in anyway lie with Liverpool but what you are saying here is quite disgusting. How can you glow with pride that Forest fans were there on time? So what .People lost their lives in a tragedy where the authorities failed to do their job.The people paid to do their job on the day failed to do so and lost control and more than likely tried to cover the truth.
Most of the Daglish bit sounds familiar to me as I read his book a few years back so its not really breaking news.

hmmm - here we go the old 'fans turned up late' allegation.
some facts for you.
In 1981 - spurs were allocated the leppings lane end. 38 supporters sustained crush injuries, broken legs, arms, ribs. Spurs were accussed of bringing ticketless fans.
In 1987 - during the coventry leeds semi final held at hillsbrough - the 12:15 kick off was delayed due to 'late arrivals' and problems at the leppings lane turnstiles.
in 1988 - syp requested all liverpool coaches arrive by midday for the 3pm kickoff. There were 3 soccer special trains - and South yorkshire police controlled the flow of fans into the stadium.
in 1989 - coaches/cars were delayed by road traffic accident and there was only one soccer special train which arrived at 2.20pm.
problems at the turnstile area were evident from as early as 2.30pm were 5000 fan were awaiting admittance. The problem was the maths.
24'000 liverpool fans had to enter the stadium via 23 turnstiles in one enclosed access point.
28'000 forest fans had to enter the stadium via 60 turnstiles that ran the entire length of two sides of the stadium.
The health and safety executive investigation into the disaster found:" the longest delays most likely to occur at the leppings lane turnstiles, particularly log delays would likely to be experienced by those with tickets for the leppings lane terrace. We would therefore expect larger crowds to form outside the turnstiles in the leppings lane area than any other part of the ground."
28% of the total turnstiless were allocated to admit half the crowd.
Furthermore - 24'000 fans via 23 turnstiles = an admittance ratio of over 1000 people per turnstile per hour.
The expectation on the forest turnstiles was as little as 400 per turnstile per hour.
The governments green guide on the safety at sport said turnstile admission rates should not exceed 600 persons per turnstile per hour. HSE show turnstile admissions only ever reached 660 persons per turnstile, meaning as they couldnt hit 1000 target - leaving an excess of fans awaiting admittance. Which increased as more and more fans arrived.
Lord justice taylor surmised that the maths of getting all liverpool fans in on time was elementry and the hse report surmised there wasn't a cat in hells chance unless there was a controlled entry of all fans from before 1pm.
And before you start on ticketless fans adding to the congestion.
The hse counted every fan from cctv footage, who went through the turnstiles, over the wall and through the gate and found the number who entered equalled the allocation.
Dont let the facts get in the way of 'the truth'

do you think i should let allegation pass without comment?
whether he believes what he's sayin or is merely on a wind up - to allow such bollox to go unchallenged allows for myths to persist in the minds of others.
He's presented me with an opportunity to re-educate anyone reading with the actual facts.

Fair play. I for one am glad to know a little bit more about the facts. I stopped caring about any particular English team a long time ago, but it is good to know the truth regarding incidences such as this.

Points scoring on a tragedy like this is pathetic really, whatever the rights and wrongs of what happened it was a terrible day and like the Heysel and the Bradford disasters of the same era i feel even numb thinking back to it, as i remember distinctly the days they all happened
It could have been any of us or our friends and family, just normal football fans

Rubbish - why should Liverpool bail out Luton? They shouldn't. Luton's money issues are their own not Liverpool's.
