Dennis Wise & Family Attacked
LEEDS United manager Dennis Wise and his family came under attack from a missile-throwing gang in a Leeds suburb.
The incident happened as they were returning home from a dinner date on New Year's Eve. Fortunately, no-one in the car was injured although the luxury 4X4 was damaged.
The 41-year-old manger is understood to have dived out of his car and run after the young yobs. He was able to catch up with one youth and hold on to him - effectively making a citizen's arrest. However, the teenager managed to break free and run away.
The incident happened in Potternewton, in north Leeds at about 1am on New Year's Day as Dennis, his heavily pregnant wife Claire, their two young children and Dennis's mother-in-law were returning home after a night at a Leeds city centre restaurant. The family - particularly Dennis's young children Amber, aged three and eight-year-old Henry - were left shocked.
They continued on their journey home to North Yorkshire.
Police first became aware of the incident when they were contacted, during the early hours of New Year's Day, by the family of a 13-year-old boy.
A police spokeswoman said that yesterday a 41-year-old man voluntarily turned up at a Leeds police station to give a statement about the incident. A 13-year-old boy was also questioned after turning up at the police station with an adult member of his family.
The spokeswoman said that police were investigating criminal damage to a
car and also an allegation of assault by a 13-year-old boy.
Today, Dennis Wise's solicitor Geoffrey Rogers told the YEP: "Any suggestion of assault is absolutely denied by Dennis".
In an official statement, a West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "Two people, a 13-year-old boy and 41-year-old man, have been interviewed in connection with an incident that occurred in Potternewton just before 1am on January 1. Inquiries are ongoing."
The spokeswoman added that, at this stage, no-one had been arrested or charged.
It is believed that police have photographed the damage to the car - as is normal in such a case.
Hours after the stone-throwing incident, Dennis's son Henry - who celebrated his eighth birthday on New Year's Day - was one of four mascots at Leeds's home game against Oldham Athletic - which ended in Leeds's first defeat in the league at Elland Road in 10 months.
Wise will probably get no pity here but it is a disgrace, especially after the season we are having. A little blip and there are a tiny minority of fans coming out with the 'get the Chelsea out of Leeds' shit. If it wasn't for the deduction we would be top, we lost our 1st game at home in the league for 10 months & people react like this. Idiots !
