My 11 might be a little controversial in one or two positions but am trying to play our best 11 ability wise!!
1. Shay Given
2Steve Finnan 4.Richard dunne 5.John O Shea 3. Kevin Kilbane
7. Stevie Hunt 8.Stevie Ireland 6.Steven Reid 11.Damian Duff
9.Kevin Doyle 10.Robbie Keane
I think this team if coached properly would give most teams a run for their money!!! When you think about McGeady, Andy Reid, Long, McShane, amoungst others can come in!!

stevie hunt's an impact player at best, he'd get found out at international level relatively quickly if starting, especially on his weaker foot.
we have three half-decent left wingers but no-one on the right.

Our other option is Steve Ireland on the right with A Reid, Miller or Carsley in the centre!!

not carsley. too slow and disinterested. i'd say a midfield of miller, reid, reid and duff. it's not made for getting crosses into the box but since we've no target men, what harm?
o'shea and kilbane are worries too, especially in light of mcshane's awfulness this season

Ya we're weak at the back but its the best we have!! . Thats why I don't have McShane in there. He's a disaster waiting to happen!!! A.Reid is a bit too slow for international midfield i think!!

I was about to say that I agree with all of that except Kilbane, but then I went looking for an alternative. John O'Shea's the only one (and not a great one at that), but that means putting McShane or O'Brien in the middle.
Stephen Reid was badly missed during the last qualifiers.

Have to agree there, Hunt > McGeady. (Although I've only seen McGeady play for Celtic once, so I've only his international games to go on).

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't get double POTY this year in Scotland - and if the huge clubs don't come calling pretty soon. His game has blossommed the last few months. Hunt is the new Robbie Savage - all bite and business, nothing else in his locker.

maybe his game has come on recently, but i've never been convinced by mcgeady. too much feck-arsing around, not enough end product. maybe that's okay in the spl, but not enough for ireland. then again, is miller better?
oh, and i'd have stephen ireland, not andy reid, in centre mid. what was i thinking?
any more thoughts on centre-back and left back? is it time to start blooding people like clive clarke? smacks of desperation

Would have completely agreed with you this time 12 months ago. His game has improved exponentially since then. Going to be the first world class Irish player in a long time.

Christ, strong words. I'll happily stand corrected about the Hunt/McGeady thing if he's come on like that.

Coin I'm the first to admit Celtic are an average team with average players. I don't build them up into anything they are not unlike some folk on here waxing lyrical about certain players and their own clubs. McGeady is 21 and is in inspirational form at the moment. He has bulked up the past 6 months and his speed is phenomonal now since he's worked on it.
Everyone will say "But it's the SPL", and it is, but that didn't stop Larsson from being a classy player and McGeady has been nothing short of brilliant since the start of October.

agathe to juventus, regi blinker for world player of the year.
i don't see too much controverial in the original poster's 11. i know it's popular to slate the quality of our players but we don't have a bad squad at all.
i'd like to see clinton morrion recalled to the squad, just to the bench for now. he always did ok for ireland and offers something different to doyle/keane, and he's been banging them in for palace recently.

Now if you can find where I've posted that....
Wide men who frighten defenders enough to draw a second man are absolutely invaluable because of the space they create for the rest of the team. (I'm convinced this is one of Liverpool's major problems. No winger draws a double team). Ireland had no one even near to this through the last qualifiers, and suffered badly for it. Damian Duff, whatever anyone thinks about him, drew two defenders within three minutes of coming on as a sub in his first game back. Two guys like that and Ireland have a genuine threat.

well, you've really laid yourself open for stern criticism if your mcgeady predictions don't come through. you'd better start working on some injury related backup plan...

Yup great point
Liverpool snuffed out Messi last year by doubling up, the better teams regularly do this against Ronaldo
Duff is no Messi or Ronaldo, but easily the best wide man we have

I'd have had similar concerns about McGeady last year
Seen him a few times this season and he looks much better
Ronaldo was a headless chicken once too remember
I'd play both him and Duff but then again i like width
Still if the FAI wanna give me a go i'll do it for 200 K a year

yeah. for palace. he's got the first touch of a brick wall.
i'd be delighted to be wrong about mcgeady. i'd also be delighted if carsley's legs fell off. it wouldn't affect his standards much, but at least he might stop getting picked for ireland

That will be the new managers 1st challenge!!! He's too good to leave him slip away from us. We actually need to build the team around him.

that's what i'd go for too, maybe mcshane ahead of o'shea. i genuinely think that's not a bad side, though you'd want a bit more bite in centre midfield.

No matter how poor O'Shea has been at United, McShane has been awful at Sunderland and poor enough for Ireland in recent times too. Think a Dunne/O'Shea partnership would be the best option at the moment.
