I've been watching Robbie Keane for many's the year now and he's a headless chicken and bottler on the big stage.
In these sort of exercises, I go on what I've seen of players in live games against decent opposition.
You can't judge anything on highlights programmes. I attribute the lauding of certain midfielders as world class when they can't do their job properly but do score spectacular goals and that it's taken half the season for people to sit up and take notice of Anderson to this.

Sir Alex Ferguson said Liverpool star Steven Gerrard would be an ideal replacement for Roy Keane.
The Manchester United boss said he rates the England star even more highly than Arsenal skipper Patrick Vieira.
"He has become the most influential player in England, bar none. Not that Vieira lacks anything, but Gerrard does more," Ferguson told the Sunday Times.

Christ Sound, talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel.
While a very good player, like Ronaldo, Gerrard remains a blunt instrument. Unlike Ronaldo, Gerrard wants to play central midfield where that doesn't cut it.
Pound for pound, Gerrard is the greatest waste of talent I've seen. It actually is an awful pity that Ferguson didn't get his hands on him, perhaps he might have turned him into the Robson/Keane/Scholes hybrid he ought to have been.
As is, he's a big fish in the moderately sized pool that is Liverpool, will not make it into the ranks of the true greats like he ought to have and will likely finish his career without a league medal.
Best yet Sound, the Pool supporting brother is in total agreement with this assessment.
Well, except the dig about Pool being a moderate sized club these days obviously.

As I said he doesn't control a game like he should but you wont catch me being mealy-mouthed about what he does do and has done for Liverpool. He has obvious faults but he's saved our bacon more times than I care to remember. He's also given away enough posession to be detrimental but the positives far outweigh the negatives IMO. He's never going to be Xavi but then again he aint that type of player. He also stopped being a Keane type many years ago and tends to suffer because of it. Nobody ever complained that Keane didn't get the goals yet it a stick to beat Gerrard with.
If he played in Europe he wouldn't even be in central midfieled, he'd be behind the strikers.
PS, that your brother agrees with you or not is the mootest thing in moot land on the great festival of Moot.

I dont think there`s any forward who has been outstanding on a consistent basis as of yet, and a lot of that has been down to injuries ect. If you look at some of the top scorers, Anelka, Santa Cruz ect, they have all been good in patches. Berbatov for me has not been that consistent either, but when he`s good he`s sublime. Tevez, Adebayor, Anelka and Santa Cruz could all go in there, I think Torres is a must.

I cannot believe that Lescott's not been mentioned here. He has possibly been one of the best defenders in the league this season, having played at left back and centre back when needed. Agree with Forsberg on the Berbatov issue. He has been mediocre this season and doesnt warrant a place based on the last month's play. I'd have Robbie Keane there before Berbatov.

Fair play to the Everton lads on here. They see through Berbatov's reputation. He has been a disgrace this season, A DISGRACE. I'd score 4 goals against Reading myself. If he stays he better cop the fuck on cos we all know what he's capable of. Admiring what players are capable of doesn't cut it for me. They have to actually go out and do it for 90 minutes every game. The odd amazing first touch or rocket goal is very good but a player is not doing enough if he's ducking out of general play a lot.

Yup... Birmingham's winner at the Lane epitomizes exactly what has been his problem this season... The ball came out to him and all he needed to do was use a bit of body strength and guts to win a ball (that he was favourite to win) and play it up the field. Instead he made a half hearted jesture , lost the ball and we all know what happened next.
Great talent ... shit attitude.
The annoying thing though is that he'll be fantastic if he goes to United ... It's much easier to put in the effort in a winning set up

It's not GAA.
The game lasts 90 minutes and strikers need to be fresh and sharp if and when that last minute chance comes.
The fans and media love the likes of Tevez racing around the place like a madman.

You purported this theory before. If I remember correctly, the basis of it was your own experience of being knackered at the end of the game when that all-important chnce presented itself.
I would respectfully suggest that that would only be an issue for us mortals and not super-fit PL soccer players in the prime of their lives.

No, the theory isn't mine, it's based on what was said by many about Cantona at the time. It's just that my own (very limited experience) would rather back it up.

I`m a huge fan of Berbatov but given the choice i`d actually prefer if United signed Anelka. United dont need another player like Berbatov who isnt really an out and out striker. Rooney and Tevez both play deep a lot, Anelka would be perfect IMO. I dont care what anyone says about his attitude and previous history, he`s fast, good on the ball and a great finisher. Dont think he`d be as effective with Chelsea though.
On Tevez, I agree for the most part. Time will tell, he needs to work a lot on his finishing.

I have only seen him twice(once against the Italians). Like Taylor, I can watch a game for half an hour and know what a player is about. Trust me, there's not many better right backs in Britian.

Fair f*cks, cause it's a lot harder to do with defenders than forwards.
Players like Messi and Rooney, I reckon you could see it with their first couple of touches in senior football.
Not so much Ronnie, mind. ;)

Rooney, simply because I haven't seen enough of Torres.
your super sense of talent didnt help ya much when comparing these two.
i think sagna & eboue would have a thing to say on hutton being a better right back. and thats just at one club.

I've only seen him a couple of times as I dont watch much Scottish footie. Once being skinned by McGeady and another being utterly destroyed against Lyon.
Probably not a great straw poll, I'll grant you.

As someone who watched Cantona, that is a load of bs.
Kevin Davies goes out and does it for 90 minutes every game (as does Tevez).
I know who I'd rather leading the line for Utd.Yer getting me all wrong there. When I say a player should be putting it in for 90 minutes I'm not talking about expending too much energy. I'm simply talking about being mentally sharp and doing the right things to keep the team's playing pattern going as best as possible. When Spurs were slightly on top in the first half of the Arsenal game at the Emirates a few weeks ago his job was to be strong on the ball but he didn't want to know. Time after time he was easily outmuscled and made pathetic attempts to look for free kicks. That's dishonest play and it undermines the rest of the team's efforts.
Energy conservation is a totally different matter. Every player knows when and how to get a breather. Some are more clever than others at it but don't mistake it for lazy and dishonest play.

richard dunne has been a consistantly good defender for nearly 4 years now.
he almost went down a different route.
he would be a great signing for the pool to replace hyppia but maybe he wants champions league football so hes going to sit it out.

In fairness, Richards, Dunne, Elano and Petrov would warrant consideration for team of the season at this stage.

petrov without a doubt. richards has had his dodgey spells recently. and elano has had the injuried which kept him out of an important spell.
i think fabregas has shaded the attacking centre midfield role this season.
can someone answer what happend kasper schemical? he was in citys starting 11 and then suddenly out on loan. never looked it up.
and while we discussing things that amazed me, i didnt realise that they used goal line technology in the recent world club championship that milan won.

it was a bit strange really. Scmiechel was flying but was never supposed to be first choice. The second Hart got back from an injury Sven decided to give him a go and Scmiechel went back to being third choice.

Think City are still a bit weak in goal and defo weak upfront
Keeping Dunne and co fit is crucial
Elano has faded badly but scored last week again
Petrov, shocking the other day against Liverpool, has been amazing all season

It's not GAA.
The game lasts 90 minutes and strikers need to be fresh and sharp if and when that last minute chance comes.
The fans and media love the likes of Tevez racing around the place like a madman.
Personally, I think there's a happy medium.
Roy Keane would disagree, the point you make is exactly what Niall Quinn said to Keane in Saipan. Keane wanted Quinn doing the same amount of laps and stamina training as Quinn, Quinn was trying to tell him that his game was based on timing and touch and that if he spent the game running around like Keane he'd be shagged and couldn't do his real job. Keane just couldn't get the concept through his skull and accused him of accepting lower standards
Its all in Quinn's book.
