Are we paying over the odds for comedy here in Cork, looking at prices I think were being ripped off. Des Bishop at the Opera Hse €30.00,( I'm sorry to say I went last night, not bad, but man it was not that good, another yank showing the oirish how to do it the American way which is the only way) Neil Delemare €30.00, Deirdre O Kane €30.00. At City Limits Colin Murphy €18, Bernard O Shea ( is he anything to Pat O Shea ?) €18.00. I can see these guys and plenty more at the International in Dublin for €10.00 ????. What gives with this. These guys make roughly €25,000 for each night at the Opera House, they should be thankful that they get to play in Cork at all, outside of Ireland they are failures, nobodies. So why are we paying so much here in Cork for these hobos. I've had great nights in Dublin at the Neptune, Comedy Celler, Bankers, International, and great nights here in Cork at The Craichouse, I never paid more than €10.00. Most of the comedians I have spoken to here in Ireland have said to play in Cork is a pleasure every time, Cork audiences are the best, so why are we paying these red knecks over the odds , what do you think, am I right or wrong. Now paying €30.00 for Dylan Moran at the Cork Opera House is also expensive but at least your getting to see and hear a living legend.

You are right BUT Who runs the international? Des Bishop and his brother Aidan.
They can get those comedians to play there for NOTHING. To get the same comedians to come to Cork would cost you an arm and a leg.

I suppose it's like any other section of show business, when you make it you can charge, especially if people are willing to pay "over the odds" to see you perform live. As for the International well thats the Holy Grail for Irish comedians, so anyone would be happy to play there for free. But yes I do agree that perhaps people are paying a lot, but if their willing to pay, plus how many comedians can fill a 1,000 seater at the Opera House. I couldn't even fill 10 seats at the Slainte so who am I to say, still €25,000 for 2 hours, fuck how sweet is that, i could buy another pink shirt.

I think that we are paying over the odds for most things in this country, comedy is no different :(

it's because people are fucking sheep. they could not tell the differnece between a good comedian and a brush.

"oh yes, let's go see Des Bishop talk about how he can speak irish while exploiting people in socio economically deprived areas during his lunch break at the local Abra Kebabra. An then make it unfunny by standing on stage shouting about the issues that the audience cannot comprehend and then they laugh for no apparent reason".

every comedian in this country is over priced. all in all, it's the small clubs that made these comedians not the big clubs. support your local clubs, like the craichouse and the bankers. you will find better comedy and of course genuine laughter.

Well put daphne6, at this stage I have been to nearly every comedy club here in Ireland, and I had just as good a laugh in the small clubs as any of the big one's, the main difference was the price. I am currently studying the comedy scene here in Ireland for a book ( I review clubs and comics for a living back in the US) and I have to say the Irish are being ripped off to pieces.
The Bankers give you variety,
Neptune gives you controlled but funny comedy,
the Craichouse gives you madness that should'nt work but does.
I see a big change in comedy here in Ireland, the present so called "Kings" can't make it outside of Ireland ( I know I've seen them try). From what I've seen new comedians are angry at the closed shop and will succeed with the help of Neptune and certainly Craichouse. A new agency might start here in Ireland in 2009 ( American/British based) and it will end the cartel Lisa Richards has been running.
