Roy Keane feels there are "too many big heads" in the current England squad - and says they must "take responsibility" for the team's failure. Sunderland boss Keane has slammed England's players following their failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
Croatia secured a deserved 3-2 victory at Wembley on Wednesday evening, ensuring England miss out on next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.
Steve McClaren has since been sacked as England boss - but Keane feels the blame does not entirely lie with the manager.
The former Manchester United captain believes the squad is made up of too many egos, and is adamant that the players should step up and take some of the heavy criticism.
"They certainly have the heart and the passion, but that only gets you so far," he said. "Technically you have got to be able to handle the ball. These top countries who are constantly qualifying and winning tournaments have that.
"Having said that and if you look at some of the England players, they're ******* good players.
"But certainly if you look at some of the England players and the England set-up, and to be from the outside looking in - just my opinion - there are too many egos in there, too many big heads.
"If you get carried away with any little bit of success, then you're in trouble.
"I look at the England set-up and they don't look a happy bunch, and their body language sometimes isn't great. As good as they are players; good players don't make good teams.
"Steve McClaren lost his job because he did not qualify, and that is fair enough. But the players have got to take responsibility for their own actions.
"I don't think international football is that important to a lot of the players these days. Club football has taken over."
There is ongoing debate as to whether England's failings relate to the lack of talent emerging at youth level.
Keane feels the correct measures are now in place, but admits the results of the system are unlikely to surface for 'many, many years'.
"To be fair to the English FA, from the one or two courses I have been on, I think they are working hard on that," he added.
"But you might not see the results of that for many, many years to come. We always talk about patience in football, but with the English national team - people don't have that patience."

well if we don't have a problem with Terry Venables managing Ireland, why not Keane for England?? he clearly has a plan to manage the "egos" that have ruined the teams chances.

He is not qualified enough to manage them
he is right in what he says but needs to get his own house in order first

You would swear the Sunderland were playing like Brazil in their prime.
If I was in his precarious position I would shut up until his team were actually a threat to anyone above them in the table and at least were on the way to securing Premiership survival never mind actual success.
But for Sunderland survival will be a success.

some neck on the fucker, he should get his own house in order before mouthing off about things that have absolutely no relevance to the job he`s contracted to.

How exactly does he get his own house in order?? He's not exactly blessed with an amazing squad of players. If they even finish one place outside the relegation zone this season, then that has to be seen as success for them. As for his comments they are spot on and resonate with a lot of people over here. It fucks me off when people slag the fella off regardless of what he says. He holds a lot more creedence over here than he does at home, a nation of begrudging fuckers indeed.

how surprising  you are one of these lads that have accorded him with the secular version of papal infallibility. He should be lambasted for the dire signings, for the best part they are dross. His inability to strengthen in the summer, despite being provided with serious funds, WILL be the clubs undoing.

Rabbiting on about England losing to a Pot 1 European rated team and what he'd do.
Then his team lose 7-1 to a third rate Everton

I'd be very slow to call Everton third rate
They have been very unlucky in some big games this season and will be a much better side now that they have players back from injury

maybe that's a bit harsh, they are certainly a second rate premiership outfit, (not quite breaking into the BIG 4). they finished behind Spurs the last two years, so third rate on a european level
