I don't support any premiership teams but thought I had grown out of supporting England's opposition. I didn't mind them doing well the last few years in football or rugby. But I watched the end of the match with a big group and I felt the mob mentality make me cheer for Croatia.
I think it's because it's good to see the Nation taken down a peg or two on the international stage. I find the majority of the people sound out, but their media goes way over the top in championing them and it's good to see them fall flat on their face every now and again.

Er, he is English, you do realise that?
But yes, he is also an utter cunt of the worst kind. Total media-whore, pops up on our airwaves, refers to Ireland as 'we'. Meanwhile, over on the beeb, he calls England 'we'. He has columns up and down the land. In Liverpool's press, he calls Liverpool 'we', just as he calls Preston North End 'we' whenever he write a piece in their local rag. He always predicts Liverpool are going to lose each week, except in his scouse column, where he always predicts a win. Seriously- next time he calls a Pool defeat on the last word, go check the scouse paper he writes for.
The man is a cretin.

It is awful, but not all of them are hypocrites, a few wished us well. Listen, it's a harmless thing really 'look how Irish I am, I hate England', wow, big deal. It's the glory hunters who sing loudest, so don't worry about it, the irony of their mockery is beyond them, remember, they picked ENGLISH teams to follow, not German or French or Spanish, they love us, it's just their inferiority complex that blinds them from the truth, we're all the same.

Most of us support English teams because when we were young the only quality football on TV was from the English league. The odd time you might get the Old Firm games on but not have as much as Liverpool, United & Arsenal being on the tele. Thats not the case anymore. In fact when I was going to buy a United jersey for my cousin for his birthday, his mam said get him a Real Madrid one because thats the team he watches every week.
I wanted England to get through the other night. I think I'd enjoy the comp more if a team whose players I see week in week out were taking part. However England's failure amuses me to a certain extent. I sick shit of hearing how great Gerrard is, Lampard is etc. Neither of them could pass wind the other night when it counted for their country. Also the team in many ways seems to be picked with the medias thoughts in mind.
One final thing. The club I support is Manchester United. I read a column from Richard Kurt on Wednesday, and in it he was proclaiming his support for Croatia. Even some English people laugh at the failure of the National side. Also from my own point of view, we'll be the spared the 'will he be fit/wont he be fit' debate thats centered on the likes of Rooney & Beckham in recent years.

Witness the mixed terraces between bitterest rivals, sharing pints in the same pubs afterwards, see the community spirit fostered when everyone comes together as part of the club. I'd say its probably unique in the sporting world and its what sport should be about.
Plus we have an international dimension too, where we have a commendable record against full professionals, unfortuately its against Aussies who seem hell bent on wrecking it.
Ye could learn a hell of a lot, lad.

from the first medical journal that shows up on a google search:
Alcoholism
Alcohol dependence; Alcohol abuse
Definition
Alcoholism is an illness marked by drinking alcoholic beverages at a level that interferes with physical health, mental health, and social, family, or occupational responsibilities.
Alcoholism is divided into 2 categories: dependence and abuse.
I've never considered it an illness, self-inflicted.

The Sunday Indepedent have been slyly promoting hatred of the travelling community long before we had this latest immigration, I'd be the first to call them on it.

My problem is with England is its over exaggerated self importance on the world stage & the apparent divine right its journos think they have to success.
Any Englishman with world class ability & the brains to back it up will gain nothing but admiration from me. Nick Faldo, Jonny Wilkinson, Paul Scholes and Ronnie O'Sullivan (ok he may lack the brains bit at times) are all men I'd have no problems forking out money to watch in action. I even used hope Tim Henman would win Wimbledon some day as he seems to be a decent sort who suffered from mass over-hyping every June.

The reason we support English clubs is due to economic and political reasons.
From being under British rule most the current League of Ireland clubs were established in garrison towns such as Sligo, Dundalk, Cobh etc.
The economic dependency on Britain that followed independance through most of the last century meant a large percentage of the population had to head to other English speaking countries. Our relatively new country took much of it televisions programmes from England, again due to language and ties.
It wouldn't have been outlandish to have had 5,000+ of the Old Trafford attendance heading over on the ferries in the 80's, thousands more heading to Anfield, Arsenal, Man City, Leeds, West Ham etc.
It's not gloryhunting, ..it's the leftovers and traditions built up from political and economic dependence.
If we had been ruled by the French, ..we'd be speaking French, PSG or OM would be box office on the sports forum and we'd be even better lovers than we are now.
Things may change in the future, ..the eircom league is growing at a fast rate, facilities are improving, the players are younger rather than old men of the 80's and 90's. ...and the La Liga thread is evidence of growing interest and exposure to the Spanish league.

As apposed to the pure, raw, skill of the overpaid, scumbag, nancy boys regularly seen rolling around the pitch after being brushed against by another soccer player is it?

What games are Skysports and the BBC going to show since none of the UK teams are taking part in this competition?
Will they do the same as they did with the RWC? i doubt it, they must have already bought the tv rights, right?
Ive to say that seeing England getting kicked out of a major competition at home really put a smile on my face though.

Roger Mosey, BBC Director of Sport, said: "It will be great for our audiences to have Euro 2008 available from BBC Sport on television, on radio and online. Combined with the Beijing Olympics, it should be an amazing summer of sport."
