"His reign is the shortest in the history of the English national team."

In fairness I don't actually think it was entirely his fault. I agree he wasn't up to the job in the first place but he hasn't been helped by having the poorest batch of players available to an England manager in years.
It's not his fault there isn't one decent English goalkeeper in the "premiership".
Also he was missing some key players last night (Rooney, Terry, Ferdinand, Owen).
But I bet most of the Little Englanders will bury their head in the sand and delude themselves that they are still one of the top footballing nations in the world and were only let down by the incompetence of their manager.
Sven will be having a wry smile to himself this morning.

FA chairman Geoff Thompson said: "Like every England fan, we are all bitterly disappointed that we have failed to qualify for Euro 2008, and I know Steve feels that disappointment more than anyone.

"Of course we have no divine right to play in major tournaments, but it is quite right that qualification is expected.

Oh really, he should clue in the rest of the English media on this.

I think that clip illustrates perfectly why Croatia were so highly motivated to prevent England qualifying last night, even though they were already qualified themselves.

yeah fair play to bilic for playing a strong side and croatia for giving england a decent game,to be fair it was closer than it perhaps should have been.

as for mcclaren i feel sorry for him,as someone else stated he was without some key players for the majority of his reign and had to contend with the constant criticism of his squad selections from the press.

was impressed with him when he took the stance with beckham when he first took over but knew he wouldnt last much longer when he backtracked on that decision a few months ago.

This is from BBC Sport, it may have been posted before:

Roy Keane has blamed the egos in the England camp for their failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
The Sunderland boss says all the blame cannot be put on sacked manager Steve McClaren, whom he knows from their days at Manchester United.

McClaren was assistant at Old Trafford during part of Keane's playing days.

"My opinion, looking in on England from the outside, is that there are too many egos involved in the England set-up and that has cost them dear,"

The lack of technique and the ability of England's players has been cited as major reason for England's poor campaign but Keane brushed off such excuses.

"Unfortunately, the manager takes the brunt of it but I do believe players have to take more responsibility, especially at that level," he said.

"When you look at the talent that the England lads have got it is really unbelievable they haven't qualified.

"When you talk about talent and technique, England have that in abundance at the moment.

"To say the likes of Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham are not technically as good as other players is wrong because they are."

Roy's right, there was a lot of smirking last night. They're not really that bothered. Beckham made a jokey comment in his post-game interview, ..If they were genuinely upset that wouldn't have happened.

It's a bit harsh on McClaren, ...but if he'd have stuck to his early decisions to drop Beckham and not to play Gerrard and Lampard together he might have survived not qualifying. ...As soon as he backtracked on those and it failed he couldn't even play the 'building a new side' card.

..plus his games record of 28% defeats is the worst of any England manager.

Whoopsy Daisey .... didn't look at the times of the posts ....

on a quick count, there looks to be 13 threads related to England last night, as well as other threads on Euro 2008.

There's hardly be that many threads if Ireland won the World Cup itself...

we still have quite a bit more 'maturing as a nation' to do.

but it was funny last night, ..probably the funniest match I 've ever seen!

carry on.

"I was asked a few years ago (to take charge of England) but then I said no," he said.

"Maybe they will call me again now but I understand they (the Football Association) have other things on their minds, like digesting the fact they have not qualified for the finals of Euro 2008.:):):)

"I know the chance of becoming England coach isn't that big."
