View Full Version : Staunton: a reflection
its obvious we got rid of the gaffer too soon, we managed 3rd, the same as "mighty" England who were in a worse group and the same as the North and Scotland. We also did better than Wales, on mature reflection, I think we have made a serious mistake

The only mistake was appointing him in the first place.
Good wum attempt though.
His record is JUST AS GOOD AS ANYONE ELSE IN THE NORTH WEST OF EUROPE

Yes abject failure for the lot of the home nations coaches.

We came 3rd in a far far tougher group than England's.
I'd say stan is having a wee wry smile today.

To be honest I thought our group was piss poor apart from the top two teams. Israel would have wiped the floor with us in this campaign. Slovakia are no marks, Wales don't know what they are, Andorra > San Marino too in the battle of the minnows. All irrelevant really, Stan was never the right man for the job.

our group on paper when i first looked at it i thought it was tough, slovakia were a big disappoinment, though t they were better than what they showed, czechs are only ok and the welsh are nothing,im sure someone will retrieve the stats but i wouldnt be too far wrong in saying cyprus probably accum. more points this campaign than their previous 2/3 combined i think that is a fiar reflection on how poor a group it turned out to be.
for instance you take the scots who had the two WC finalists in their group yet with a similiar player base came so close to qualifying,NI had memorable wins over spain and sweden,we have little to show for our efforts - 3rd miniscule consolation.
i hoped when stan was appointed that he would prove me wrong but he was the wrong man for the job, curious to see does he continue his coaching learning curve..
