Best free kick ever was goofy Ron's against England. He meant it and don't ever let anybody say he didn't. Gazza's in the semi against Arsenal was a close second and the best long range goal was Nayim for Zaragoza. Hmmmm... I think there's a pattern emerging here! :p

There was a link posted here a few days ago to some nice free kicks.

I like the Gazza one myself.

Maradona had a lovely one too for Napoli where he dinked it over the wall from the edge of the box. I think it was against Juventus or maybe it was Ascoli or even Notts County!

He said in an interview, some time later, that he didn't mean it.Nope, it was a shot at goal though he was aiming for the other corner. (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4159/is_20030601/ai_n12740844)

"No, no, you can't say that, because I was aware of the keeper's position and went for the shot at goal. The fact that it did not go in exactly as I planned is secondary to the fact that I was having a go.
"What basically happened is that I hit my shot too hard and, as it travelled through the air, it swerved more and ended up looping Seaman. There was nothing he could do about it and I suppose there was an element of luck involved, but a goal is a goal."

You can see by the way he hit it that he had no intention of finding a team mate:

Riquelme, Pirlo and Juninho have scored plenty of nice ones.

My favourite is Stuart Pearce's in the Cup Final '91. Had that stupid wanker Gascoigne been sent off for kicking Garry Parker in the neck, Brian Clough would have finally got his hands on the trophy which proved so elusive.

I reckon this one is better.I dunno Kola, I may be wrong but it looks to me as though there's a slight deflection off the shoulder of the guy in the wall.

You could be right. Very slight though and very far out.

You could be right. Very slight though and very far out.It seems to have put a lot of top spin on the ball though without taking much off the pace of it. An audacious free alright but I don't think it can be in contention for the best ever if there's any sort of deflection on it.

That's not a patch on Clayton Blackmore's 45 yarder away to Montpellier in 1991. ;)

its a hit and hope ronaldo style. wall broke, took a deflection, keeper slow to get across. zola was a magician at the edge of the box free kicks, which take much more technique

It wasnt a great one for out and out striking but the one Zanetti scored for Argentina against England in France '98 was class just for the way they worked it.

2 of my favourite United ones were Giggs' vs. Blackburn in '93 & Beckham's against Villa in '99.

Another favourite was a Zizou special for France against Spain in Euro 2000.

I don't know, from that distance, there's a lot of accuracy involved in that kind of effort as well.

If he's lining up from there, it suggests it was no fluke.

Ronaldo is a different kettle of fish.

His free kicks are broadly disastrous and he should be relieved of duties.

that's a lot better than the original one which seemed to loop for ages (possible deflection as previously mentioned), and the keeper was very poor. this one has more speed and better accuracy.

Went more around the side of the wall than through it but some strike. I mean the ball was still rising when it hit the net.

You do realise the Irony of this comment??
If Gazza had been sent off for kicking Garry Parker, he wouldn't have been on the field to make that "tackle" on Gary Charles which led to Stuart Pearce's free kick, and caused the injury after which he was never the same player again.

in fact with hindsight, i think must Spurs fans would have rathered he had been sent off, and therefore not missed the entire 91/92 season, i'm not so sure Forest would have won that game for certain against ten men.
Now if Des Walker had been sent off, that might have been a different matter :)

True about the first sentence but we would have passed ye to death with a man advantage and won the game comfortably.

Forest had an excellent record against Spurs back then and that continued into the mid 90's, unfortunately ye won the the most important game though.

Remember this one in 1990, live on ITV. League Cup, Q-Final replay in London.

I do remember that goal alright, but I have more vivid and painful memories of the shoot-out in the 96 5th rd. FA cup replay.

Remember the blizzard in the abandoned game??? couldn't find it on youtube, it was unreal. on the topic of Free Kicks, two from Ian Woan
kept forest in the posponed tie , cancelling out Chris Armstrong's double.

Goals from Brian Roy (whatever happened to him) and old boy Teddy Sheringham meant the reply at the Lane ended in a draw, before that fateful shoot-out

I always wondered how commited Sheringham was when he took that spot kick though!!!

Woan's 2nd was a beauty. It was in more of a wing position than central & Walker hadnt a hope.

Goals from Brian Roy (whatever happened to him)

Roy was brilliant the first season after we signed him, he lost his way after that.
Collymore leaving was definitely a factor. Roy didn't do much in his career after eventually leaving himself, he played in Germany and then went home to play in Holland.

Exciting player to watch though, on his day.

Mark Crossley was some man to save penalties, the only keeper to save a Le Tissier penalty.

i seen a clip there not so long ago, it was from the 70's or 80's, bloke flicks the ball up in the air and the other player volleys it over the wall and straight into the goal, class.

For which he've have already been at Lazio...

admittedly, but it was a financially costly year for Spurs. I'm sure they had to foot the bill for his treatment and wages until he joined Lazio for 5.5 millon, which was 3 million less than the fee agreed pre-injury.

just wondering there also about how bad that injury was for Celtic. I doubt he'd have ended up at Rangers, if he hadn't become a shadow of his former self. so in a weird way that tackle gave Rangers the title in 95/96 as they clinched the title thanks to Gazza's hat-trick against Aberdeen
