Lots of dodging going on, not many suggestions. I thought one of you could at least have gone with Danny Boy.

If the Prods(not my words) have to suffer the soldiers song(not my words) then wouldn't it only be fair to get the southern jocks to stand to GSTQ?

Well?

Or is it best for us to stick with Irelands Call

very good point.

there are a lot of english players on the football team yet they agree to stand to the irish national anthem so why should it be different for the rugby team.

its not beyond ridiculous, they used to stand for it.

As did Irish teams of any international variety in days gone by...it's not accepted now though, as in the Ravenhill debate before the Ireland v Italy warm-up game...some high level rugby Prods up there wanted the GSTQ as had been the case in previous internationals played there (the last in 1954) , but the IRFU totally rejected this. Could not possibly see any of the Southern players entertaining that rogue unionist idea...

One and a half million people on this island are part of the UK and that team also represents them. If they have to stand for the Irish national anthem, isn't it only fair that GSTQ gets a run.

i would like to see amhrann na bfhian played whatever about Irelands call. for example against the georgians the other night when they played that load of bollix ireland's call, it seemed to me that the players were not really interested in it. I don't think it stirs emotions and fire in the belly like amhrann na bfhian does. If u take the example of Croke Pk against the French , some players were crying, some doing well to hold back the tears. IMO u will never get that emotion from the players singing irelands call alone.
maybe we could borrow the welsh anthem... thats class!!

GSTQ is nothing more than the anthem of one family that happen to live in the UK. It has no place representing neither England nor Northern Ireland.
'Danny Boy' is a song about Scotland.
'Soldiers Song' is only the anthem of the Republic, so should only be played in the Republic.
"God Save Ireland', great tune as it is, has two major faults, the whole "god" bit, and the fact the Free State is no more.

There is a gapping need for a new song here. Coulter's attempt at filling it doesn't work, something better is needed. Whats needed is a proper anthem for the entire island of Ireland.

On the same tack, why, when Derry, Tyrone or Antrim play in Croke Park do they not play GSTQ? I wouldn't agree with it, but it seems Lamps would not have a problem at all. Very 'mature' of him.

Or maybe having an all-island Rugby team is inherently the most nationalist Irish thing a sporting association can do. Is not a united Ireland the dream of every nationalist?
The GAA's efferts are admirable, though has serious issues with Loyalist participation which it should address, but serious questions should be asked for the other sporting bodies on the Island, both in the North and the Republic.

The Soldier's Song - Words / Lyrics

We'll sing a song, a soldier's song,
With cheering rousing chorus,
As round our blazing fires we throng,
The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight,
And as we wait the morning's light,
Here in the silence of the night,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus:
Soldiers are we , whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free, No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

In valley green, on towering crag,
Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag
That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race,
That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face,
We'll chant a soldier's song.

Chorus

Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!
The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail
Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low;
See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe,
So chant a soldier's song.

Ideally the nordies would have their own anthem, other than GSTQ, and then both could be played both home and away.

Or else we could come up with a better joint anthem than Irelands Call. Honestly, I don't think its THAT bad, but jesus it doesn't instill the pride in the heart the way Amhran na bhFiann does. And it pales in comparison to the French, Welsh, Italian and Scottish anthems

A poster on another forum raised the issue of "Amhrann na bhFiann" being played at home along with another anthem that isn't shite, unlike the dirge, unstirring song that is "Irelands Call".
Alternatives from Thin Lizzy's "Boys are back in town" to Fields of Athenry (proposed by an Ulster Unionist) were suggested.
However both of these are non runners in my opinion.
Anyone ever heard of this? Written in commemoration of those who died in 1798 (A United Irish cause). Much more patriotic than the Phil Coulters attempt, and doesn't mention the "Saxon Foe" which may have riled some of those north of the border. But it mentions the Harp and fighting spirit.
(You'll have to ignore the intro, it goes on a little...)

The Minstrel Boy (http://www.stephen-foster-songs.de/MP3/amsong72.mp3)

Lyrics:
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy right shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!
