Former head coach Andy Robinson says England are certain to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in France.
The tournament gets under way on Friday, with England's first match against the USA scheduled a day later.
And Robinson has disregarded those who are writing off England's chances of making an impact, telling BBC Radio 5live: "I've got a hunch about England.
"They will certainly get to the semis and, from there, they've got the one-off players to reach the final."
Robinson was sacked as England coach in November last year after 25 months in the job, during which time the team lost 13 of their 22 games played.
And under successor Brian Ashton, the team have slipped to seventh in the world rankings, making them outsiders for the tournament.
Robinson added: "New Zealand will obviously start the tournament as favourites, with France also looking strong and you can never write off Australia.
"But I've got a feeling for England."
The former Bath flanker dismissed claims by Lawrence Dallaglio that England, who left for France on Monday, go into the tournament ill-prepared after failing to build on the success of their 2003 triumph under Clive Woodward and Robinson.
Veteran number eight Dallaglio told BBC1's Inside Sport: "The planning process for this World Cup has only just started really.
"It should have started the day after the last one. But for two or three years after the World Cup we were still basking in the success of 2003."
Robinson countered: "I don't agree with that. Of course, 2003 was magnificent but after that everyone was focusing on 2007.
"But, yes, a review of what's happened over the last four years is necessary so that England are as best prepared for future tournaments as they can be."

I wouldnt write off england, purely because there is zero expectation on them, which is unusual for them to be so unburdened, there's no denying that means less pressure than usual for them.
They are capable of at least one shock result, but not of making any serious dent in the competition.

Depending on where they finish in their group they will be playing either wales or australia. Both are very beatable for england.
And besides, he wouldnt be as deluded as oh lets say a supporter of a team who spent most of the season in the bottom three believing that they are genuine rivals to the likes of united and liverpool

Yes indeed, and let's be honest here- although it was never beyond the realm of imaginable, who here really thought they would make the semis?
Many of us would scoffed at the idea (I remember putting up an arcticle by Eddie Butler back in January which plotted out the English route to the semis for ridicule, which was laughed at).
I'd go so far as to say that labelling talk of England making the semis before the tournament began would have qualified as deluded in most people's books. But then, if someone had told you after the Argentina game that the French would knock out the ABs, you'd have laughed them out of town also.
So let's just be fair on this one.

Hindsight is such a wonderful thing.
So is hubris.
Witness this assessment of Australia V England from the Sydney Morning Herald.
Such bad losers those Aussies.
Australia v England
George Hook, the Irish rugby pundit and an assistant coach of the USA at the inaugural World Cup, last week summed up England's chances of winning the quarter-final against Australia: if they win, it will be the worst game of the tournament. In other words England will have to bring Australia down to their level to have any chance.
Hook's assessment was clever in that it didn't write off England entirely, as many were prone to do, while also damning their style of rugby.
Viewers of the Scotland-Italy game may beg to differ, but last night's game does have some claim to be the worst game of the World Cup. But Hook's comment has a flaw. To bring Australia "down to their level", England had to exert control, not just rely on a flimsy performance from the Wallabies.
England controlled possession. They were predictably dominant in the scrum, but critically they also won the honours at the breakdown.
The men in white attacked the breakdown in numbers and with energy enabling them to efficiently recycle their possession, while forcing turnovers and generally disrupting the Wallabies.
The scrum was diabolical. By RugbyHeaven's reckoning there was not one successfully contested scrum in the first half. The first two scrums resulted in long-arm and short-arm penalties to the Wallabies, but after that referee Allain Rolland seem to think the Australians were the perpetrators of the problems.
Just why he thought England were at fault initially but the Wallabies after that, only Rolland knows, but what is most perplexing is his failure to start showing yellow cards for the complete breakdown of one of the game's fundamental platforms.
Yes last night's game was terrible, but England recognised their limitations, played well within those confines and played positively. That leave's only one team as the culprit - the error-riddled Wallabies.
That said, there is no way England can win next week, as they cannot score enough points. Twelve against the Wallabies was enough for this encounter, but they will not enjoy the same amount of possession against their semi-final opponent and they have a porous midfield.
Now, would anyone like to talk about the cricket?
