Fitzgerald in running for Tipp job
Friday August 10 2007

DAVY FITZGERALD has emerged as a shock contender for the Tipperary hurling post as officials consider looking outside the county for the first time, WRITES JACKIE CAHILL.

Tipperary chairman John Costigan said last night he "would not rule anything in or out" as the search for Michael 'Babs' Keating's successor gets under way. Costigan is a member of a sub-committee established to find a new man and the Clare 'keeper refused to rule himself out of contention.

"In the next month or six weeks, I hope to make a decision on my own career," Fitzgerald said. "Whoever goes into the Tipperary job has a really good bunch of players at his disposal."

Meanwhile, Wexford goalkeeper Damien Fitzhenry, 33, has hinted he's ready for a 16th season of intercounty hurling in 2008. Fitzhenry made his 166th appearance for Wexford when he captained the team against Kilkenny in the All-Ireland semi-final and looks set to continue next year.

Fitzgerald isn’t ruling out Tipp post
10 August 2007

Former Clare ’keeper Davy Fitzgerald hasn’t ruled out throwing his hat into the ring for the vacant manager of the Tipp senior hurling team.

As speculation increases that Premier County chiefs may plump for an ’outsider’ to take control of county affairs, Fitzgerald’s name keeps cropping up in dispatches.

Fitzgerald says he is unsure whether or not his intercounty hurling career is over after his public fall-out with county boss Tony Considine but, in the meantime, he has refused to rule out a move to the Tipp hot seat.

"In the next month or six weeks, I hope to make a decision on my own career and what path it will take," says Fitzgerald.

"I really enjoy coaching and I enjoy working with county players at the highest level.

"Working with the Tipp lads at Fitzgibbon Cup level, I got to know them very well and really enjoyed it.

"I think that whoever goes into the Tipperary job has a really good bunch of players at his disposal and should be looking at competing for Liam McCarthy sooner rather than later."

Well, it's another excuse (if one was needed) for us to hate
a)Davy Fitz
b)Tipp Hurlers

It's a happy syncronicity for me.

It's perfect. I'd been softening towards the Tipp hurlers lately and expending all my vitriol on Waterford.

I was in Thurles for the qualifier and also with my NCW missus at the third replay in the Gaelic Grounds. Unreconstructed mucksavages the lot of them, no half measures.
