This has banana skin written all over it for the Blah heads! They should win it, they're the better side, but they'll have to be mentally right again after two tough games in the past fortnight.
Limerick have nothing to lose here, Ollie Moran needs to find his early season form again and they need to be more clinical in front of goal to have a chance.
I think Waterford will win, they need to, if they don't, they'll be nothing more than a less successful version of 1990's Clare.
They should win it, however Limerick ran them pretty close until the last 10 min earlier in the season. As you said Waterford may struggle to get to grips with the physical onslaught of Limerick especially after two clean games against Cork. They may be complacent also. But its hard to imagine them fucking up now, they really do look a different Waterford side to any other, they don't lose their cool and keep hurling. Still though, Limerick will take no prisoners. KK have the AI in the bag.

I have a sneaky feeling Limerick could catch Waterford. I'd prefer to see a blah KK final but Limerick were impressive against Clare and I think Moran could be the man to quiten McGrath. Still in saying that Limerick's midfield is brutal.

I think Waterford would make a better fight of it against Kilkenny, less wasteful with possession than Limerick. Teams should be announced tonight I think, should be a good game sunday

Agreed, and i believe Waterford will be the tougher opposition for them, so im shouting for them on sunday, go on dan, get another hatrick, god he could be in double figures for goals before the end of the gaa season!!
I hope Waterford win for the simple fact that they'll give Kilkenny a proper game and could win, Kilkenny would annihilate Limerick if they got to the final

Just like limerick were going to destroy offaly and wexford in 97/98!!
Had a dream last night, (seriously, wasting a dream) and limerick won this game in my dream after a few wahferd fellas get injured.
Remember guys in the munster final, limerick were holding wahferd pretty well, until one of the limerick fellas went off and no blood sub came in, then and only then did dan shannahan find room for a goal...
prediction is, shaughnassey will have a blinder, and if begley can find one decent game in him limerick could be very dangerous.
Limericks midfield isnt as bad as some ppl make out.
It'll be a less open game for wahferd, more physical, let's see who it suits

I hope the Blaa's can come through this tomorrow and hopefully give KK a run for their money in the final.
Something has to be done about KK and how they just STROLLED into an All Ireland final so easily! To be fair Galway did put it up to them for 61 mins, but then just died off.
This is one of the easiest route to a final they've had.:???:

The run into tomorrow's game has almost done a reversal since the munster final with waterford the ones now playing consecutive games in the lead up. Even though Waterford seem to displaying a depth of fitness, belief and subs to come strong in the last 10 minutes of games, can they keep doing this?
It was only the last 10 mins that separated the teams the last day with limerick now benefiting from a rest, time to regroup, the return of their captain and a few more looks at waterfords tactics. Nonetheless, despite the limerick fire and fury I expect waterford to pull away towards the end but a limerick win wouldnt shock me either. Depending on the conditions- Waterford 1-16 Limerick 2-10

Waterford have cemented their status as hurling's version of the Mayo football team. They'll never win an AI now. Shanahan has revealed himself to be what John Giles famously referred to as a "Sunshine Boy";great when you are winning, nowhere to be seen when things are going bad.
Mullane as well, nowhere to be seen today.
I feel for the Waterford players, this year had their name written all over it. But i'm absolutely delighted Mullane played shit today and won't be getting his hands on an all ireland medal

O'Saughnessy and begley played great today. I don't feel sorry for waterford at all, they thought it was a case of showing up and then they play kk on the 2nd of sep.
saw a wahferd player at the end refusing to shake hands with a limerick fella, thats bad form.
and as others have said, thank god that ginger-gypsy doesnt get an ai medal.
Delighted that limerick are in the final, have some loyalties there as half of my blood line is form there, nice to give them another chance after those finals against offaly and wexford.

Firstly, I'm a Waterford supporter!!!!
Waterford deserved to lose, limerick played better and I'm not going to be like the cork fans at say we were robbed just cause we lost, we weren't. Mullane and Kelly played shit, and you cannot be complacent at this level. Waterford didn't perform which is not good enough.
As for saying John Mullane shouldn't get a medal, why not???Just cause he has a bald head ad he got sent off THREE YEARS AGO. Grow up, the mans settled down since 2004.
All those calling Waterford cunts should grow up too, all that is, is cork fans who cant take it that last weekend they were beaten by a side who performed better on the day.
But alas, Waterford did not perform today!!WELL DONE LIMERICK.

john mullane is the biggest scumbag of the highest order and he should be banned from playing hurling over what he did 3 years ago against a kilkenny U21 player, the KK player jumped up for the ball and mullane put his hurley between the KK legs and pulled going for no ball, the KK player was rushed to hospital
i feel sorry for mcgrath and o flynn but not for that scumbag. Ok the fact that you think Limerick will be a new power in Munster is fucking crazy. I would have loved for Waterford to have won. God knows they deserve it! I will agree that Mullane is a fuckin Pikey. Hate him,b ut you have to feel sorry for the team. Limerick are going to get slaughtered by Kilkenny. It'll be like Mayo and Kerry last year. That was 3 years ago, and bad as it was hes chaged since then. He deserves a 2nd chance and has proved this year he is not a scumbeg anymore. One of the reasons he is not liked is cause of the bald head, you know how easily people are stereotypical. And what do you have to say about the cork clare game, planley out of curiosity?
"God knows they deserve it"
YOU DO NOT DESERVE ANYTHING!!!!!even as a loving deise man, you play your game of hurling and you win or lose. If you "deserve it", you will win. Waterford didn't win. So, in truth, they didn't deserve to make the final! Thats the way I see it!!!!
One thing I don't like is a soft game for KK. And they prob will win (even though ppl said waterford would) It will be like the wexford - kilkenny game, a shambles. And in the end KK will have won an all ireland by beating only offaly, wexford, galwa y,wexford again, and luimneach. I mean come one!!!! for waterford (and cork wod have been kinda the same) it was cork, limerick, cork limerick and then KK!!!! How can that be fair that KK get such an easy route in. And it will only be easier next year.

They deserve it (and remember I am an avid Cork fan) on the basis that they have beat us twice this year and Kilkenny in the league final. So they have beat the champions of the last five or so years in just one year. they have been there or there abouts for the past few years! They fuckin DESERVE it. Quite blind of you to think otherwise. So they had one bad game. Can you remember any Champion winning team that didn't have a bad performance on their road to victory! I think not!

About deserving, in a championship you have to be consistent as every match can mean knock out. So you cant be off guard for any match, no mater how easy it might seem!!!thats my argument, and they failed in the long run by being inconsistent. THINK EOIN KELLY!!! Brilliant last weekend, mediocre today. And the full back line, five goals conceded. They didnt deserve to win the match.

i dunno will Limerick be slaughtered by KK. They may not win it but a slaughtering might be a bit OTT. Everyone had them completely written off for today including most Deise's. Will be an interesting one. Fair play to them anyway . The battled hard today imo and Waterford were flustered from the get go! Limerick came at them like a train in the first 20 minutes. I dont think anyone deserves to win anything. You either win it or you dont and Limerick won it by being the better side on the day.

why is it so unbelievable to people that limerick will start to come good in munster now?
The biggest problem they have had in recent years has been the board room stuff that is going on. Now a decent manager has come along, whos obviously sorted a lot of the behind the scenes antics and has unified the very dis-organisded team of last year.
Why did everyone this year decide that it was the year waterford "deserve it" ? Judging by todays performance of limerick, I think it's clear to see that they really deserve to be in the final.
They deserve it out of pity? because they have played well over the last year, so they deserve the ai championship more than kk who have been the most consistent side of recent years? You have all bought into the media bandwagon of it being more deserved to waterford and that it would be good for hurling if they win it.
Limerick got to the munster final, they were ten points down on tipp and came back, played another two games against tipp and won, outclassed clare, and today played waterford off the pitch, physically and technically.
I don't think it was that waterford played particular bad, but today was the first time limerick had a full squad and clicked, o'shaugnessy is as good a forward as dan, jo deane or sheffie, begley has finally found his feet after struggling a little bit to find form. Limerick's main problem before this game was their inability to score the goals, thats why now they have come good, 5 goals against waterford..
a bit stupid to put this down to luck or underperformance on waterfords part. This was a strong limerick side, who came good, tactically beat waterford, beat them on the field and didn't allow waterford a second of breathing space.
Limerick deserve to be in the final as much, and if not more than all of the last 4 and even 8.
I would be very slow to assume that this was a fluke. Teams like waterford don't lose because of a fluke.
and as for the deise fella postin here that we cant take losing, i can take losing(like last week cork were beat fairly), i however was livid with the blatantly wrong decision of 3 sunday's ago that cost cork this championship. That is my only qualm.
and as for mullane, Hes unsportsman like, he gloats into players faces and fans faces on a match to match basis, He regularly picks the ball straight off the ground and does alot of chopping on other players, thats why i don't like him, i dont give a shite if hes bald or not...a pretty odd accusation btw, thinking we hate him cos hes bald ><
deise59
13-08-2007, 01:06 AM
Before you all gloat about Mullanes shocking performance, he's had a viral infection the past 10 days. Came on him between the two Cork matches. He was substituted last week cause of it and he was substituted today because of it aswell.
I'm devastated, gutted etc. but even though we had played so well up to today, I think this defeat is easier to take than the others. Even with the ref on our side for most of the match, we were beaten by a far better side. They were hungry, we were tired. They scored 5 goals, we hit 17 wides. It comes down to that.
Browne should hang around for another year, he still adds an extra something to the half back line. I think that is the end of the road for Flynners though. He doesnt look the fittest and his asthma problems have never gone away. His shocking wide in the 2nd half just epitomised his inconsistent displays for the past 3 or 4 years. He's still a true Waterford great though, one of our finest ever players, but I think the time has come for him to move on.
Roll on next year I guess

Here is a lovely short story about hurling in Limerick.
http://www.galwayartscentre .ie/west47/west47-20/selection-1.html
If they spent less time philosophising and more time training they might have done better over the years.
"Few things are worse in fact than marking a hurler only frightened into selfhood, whose sense of self does not encompass you and is reduced to his own expectation, oversensitive feelers searching for and touching the expectations of others, but ready to be pulled back at every moment. These are the hurlers who find no joy in anything, even in their own minor or major successes. These are the hurlers that injure you."
Can't really imagine Pat Spillane asking "Well, Cyril, was John Mullane frightened into selfhood today by the Limerick half-back line?"

would have thought Limerick were one of the traditionally strong hurling counties with the exception of the last few years when they had an awful amount of political bollox in the camp and a poor management structure, they've had some great teams and some amazing players over the years. With those issues resolved, they've come a long way in 1 year in fairness. Who'd have thought at the beginning of the championship that Limerick would be in the AI? Bennis and Gary Kirby and Co are making a big difference

Great game yesterday, it really epitimised the level of Munster hurling this year. I cant remember a year like it. i will be throwing money down on Limerick because they have had the challenges compared to Kilkenny who have had a few soft games this year.
The current Watareford will always be known as the best team not to win the All ireland. I thought after the drawn game with us when they were 4 down with 4 to go to came back and draw that they'd overcome the lack of confidence that they'd shown in previous years. Yesterday was a bridge to farfor them though. Along with Waterfords 17 wides, Limericks ability to keep Dan "the man" quiet was the ultimate factor.
Fair fucks Limerick
How Eoin Kelly is rated as a top hurler is beyond me. Not just on yesterdays performance. He can't keep his head, you need to be cool to win all Irelands these days. Incredibly enjoyable game and even though I was shouting for Limerick I do feel bad for Waterford, I was there last weekend and the people were A 1 and they really really wanted it this year. I know there are a few over confident pricks supporting them but they are in the minority, this is a tough one to take. Do Limerick have a chance against KK? Hard to say although the way they commited themselves yesterday was unreal and their full back and full forward line is mighty impressive. Would love to see them beat the cats, hopefully they'll be as ready for them as they were for Waterford.

Agree with all that
Fantastic game and a really good Championship
When they re-ran some of the many Waterford wides last night on the Sunday game it brought it home to me that this was not gonna be there day no matter what
In fact, the goal prowess sometimes disguised the fact that they hit a lot of wides all Championship ( i'm open to correction on this)

I have a sneaky feeling Limerick could catch Waterford. I'd prefer to see a blah KK final but Limerick were impressive against Clare and I think Moran could be the man to quiten McGrath. Still in saying that Limerick's midfield is brutal.
Now if I had only put my money where my mouth was.
I have very little pity for Waterford. I met a few of their supporters before the drawn game with Cork on my travels & they were cocky as fuck. Ok so they beat Cork eventually but it was with more than a hint of good fortune.

I think it was Big Dan who refused to shake hands....
Unbelievable game.....heart attack stuff. Delighted Limerick won.
That'll surely give KK something to worry about
No it wasnt, he seemed to be shaking their hands and talking to them and wishing them well

How they're going to come back from this deafeat is beyond me. They were so, so poor yesterday.
I hope to fuck that Limerick put it up to KK and don't get wiped.

Good luck Limerick. Way too much talk of Waterford not deserving it. They played shit. Grand but as I said already they have beaten the past five years champions in a matter of six months. I hope they bounce back from this and provide plenty more rivalary for us! COME ON LIMERICK!

Delighted that limerick are in the final, have some loyalties there as half of my blood line is form there, nice to give them another chance after those finals against offaly and wexford.
wish them all the best.
This has been consistent with their performance against cork aswell, on both days, they have bad shooting while under pressure.
Wasted no time getting on the bandwagon there. Fair play to ya.

Waterford seemed to think that they had done the hard work last week and they only needed to show up yesterday.
Bad mistake, as we've learned to our cost down the years. Being favourites doesn't suit Cork, and didn't suit Waterford yesterday.

That was going around about Liverpool a few years ago, and well you know it.
(and they have already won two cups this year, the national league and the Munster Championship, which is like the year that Liverpool won those mickey mouse cups)
So, my learned friend, no soup for you!

Good luck to Limerick. Richie Bennis is a joy to listen to. I hate all these over serious managers and players who never look happy when they win because they're showing how serious they are about the next game. Bennis is great and the whole country will be going for them in the final.
Would be a shame if KK beat the shite out of them. Theres this big battle royal in Munster for the whole summer and if KK come along and defeat the battle weary victors of the tougher side of the championship it'll be hard to take. Albeit absolutely fair, the onus is on the minnows of Leinster to put it up to KK rather than complaining that KK have an easy ride.

Listen, the same people saying KK will walk away with this AI are the same people who said Waterford would walk away with yesterday.
Remember Limericks 1st outing this year, captain sent off and a mighty comeback, same people saying that was their big game and they'd never match that intensity again.
If they can raise to the same level on the 2nd then KK will have a problem, although they won't hit half those wides. Talk of a whitewash is a bit ignorant imo.
Also, on this "deservedness" of the Waterford team, how do they deserve success more than Lmk?? limerick have had as much heartbreak as any county in the last 20 years.
Also I apologise for my comment yesterday, I was steaming and just out of a pub full of Blahs, who were talking about their hotel accomodation for the final and their superiority over the rebels all morning, and crying at 6. I also had tears in my eyes, but for a completely different reason!

Chalk it down. Everyone was disappointed we lost to Waterford but nobody would have begruded them an All Ireland title. Personally I think KK will be dog wide of Limerick in the final and be ready. I can imagine Cody roaring at them for then next two weeks putting the fear of God into them.

From my perspective (Limerick) all the talk about teams deserving results is complete bull.
In the 90's we had what some see as our best team ever.
Back in 94 we played against offally having not won since 73. We went into the game the favourites and threw away the game in the last five minutes thus we didn't deserve it.
In 96 we went in hot favourites against a hard hurling wexford. Wexford went down to 14 men after a few minutes. The problem was that we (not unlike waterford) thought that some cosmic hurling god would turn up and gift us the karma we surely deserved, he didn't.
And due to this some of our players failed to turn up on the day and we duely lost.
These were all unbelievably heart breaking but in life you usually get what you deserve.
Remember a one off game doesn't have a memory.

True. Cork weren't given much of a chance in 99. Had a young team with a number of U-21 stars, not all that unlike Limerick at the moment (forgetting for the moment that Limericks U-21 success is a few years ago now).
Poor low scoring game on a wet day. But we won and have built on it.
Limerick at least can have a crack at the title. We'll see what happens in September.

We will indeed.
Like that Cork team, I have a feeling that if we can somehow get over the line on the 2nd of september we could see a few golden years of a team that has the potential (and only that at the moment) of taking the mantel of our best ever.
In the 90's we got out of munster and only had Antrim to deal with. We have had to do it the hard way this time.
I dont know how i'm going to cope for three weeks.. I wish it was on tomorrow.

There was certainly plenty of quality hurling played on Sunday. It wasn't a lucky once off, but my biggest fear is that after a season of top notch games, we'll have a one sided final. There's nothing like going to a final and being witness to a cracking game.
So Santa. All I want for September is a great hurling final with end to end play, great scores, goals, the lead changing hands right up to the finish and and Limerick victory. Thats not too much to ask, is it??

Thank you Waterford, you

THERE was a fashion one time for the presentation of honours to sportsmen on the basis of perceived special merit rather than actual results. Dorando Pietri, who collapsed within sight of the finishing line in the 1908 London Olympic marathon and lost out to Bloomingdales employee John Hayes (whose parents hailed from Tipperary), received an enormous trophy for his efforts instead of a gold medal.
And in 1953 the Galway County Board presented a special set of medals to their hurling team following a narrow defeat by Cork in the All-Ireland final and a couple of post-match attacks on Christy Ring in The Gresham and Barry's Hotel, Ring having broken the jaw of the Tribesmen's captain Mickey Burke during the match.
Perhaps the GAA should take a lesson from history and mint a set of medals for the Waterford hurlWithout the Decies the championship would have been as miserable as the weather
ers in recognition of the service they have done the Association these past couple of months. Because Waterford have done nothing less than single-handedly rescue the hurling championship.
On the other side of the draw from the Decies, Kilkenny have reached the final without playing a single Munster team. Their path to the decider has involved two virtual walkovers against woeful Wexford, another against Offaly and a scarcely more difficult encounter with a confused Galway outfit during which Brian Cody's men only got going in the closing minutes and still came out on top by 10 points.
We still don't know how good Kilkenny are after an All-Ireland semi-final which looked about as demanding as an early season Walsh Cup match. And, if their exertions of the past couple of weeks render Waterford liable to be caught on the hop today by Limerick, Kilkenny could end up winning the easiest All-Ireland of modern times. Once more the integrity of the championship is in Waterford's hands.
And not for the first time. Had Ken McGrath's cohorts not engineered that last gasp equaliser against Cork in the drawn game, the Munster champions would have been eliminated from the championship having lost just one match, by a team which had already lost twice. There's surely something wrong there. Waterford's fighting spirit saved the GAA's blushes.
They have also saved us from another Cork-Kilkenny final. Three of the last four deciders have been between the big two, the first time there's been a sequence of such monotony since Cork and Dublin met in the 1941, 1943 and 1944 deciders. There's never in the history of hurling been identical final pairings four years out of five. But there would have been only for Waterford.
Without the Decies the championship would have been as miserable as the weather. And their contribution hasn't merely been a negative one, though in saving us from tedium, inequity and oligarchy it is praiseworthy enough in itself. They have emerged as probably the most beloved team in Gaelic games since Ger Loughnane's boys from nowhere went all the way in 1995.
Individually there is something uniquely compelling about Dan Shanahan's run of goals, about John Mullane's single-minded focus, about Eoin Kelly's struggles with his form, about Ken McGrath's power, Tony Browne's drive, Paul Flynn's knack to come up with the telling contribution at the vital time, about the Brick and the Bull.
Every Waterford game is a thriller because they do not have the defensive solidity to ever be sure they've done enough. There is a hectic feel about their play, an off the cuff quality which makes them the hurling equivalent of tight-rope walkers doing tricks high above the ground without a net. Sometimes it's almost too nerve wracking to watch. Almost, because if you look away for a second you'll miss something.
It's interesting, too, to see how little mention there's been of Justin McCarthy this season. The accepted narrative when Waterford broke through in 2002 was of a managerial genius getting the best out of limited players. But somewhere along the line the story has changed. This year the players have taken ownership.
There's something refreshing about Waterford's seat of the pants approach. For the past few seasons we've heard so much about the attention to detail, the avoidance of mistakes, the careful calculation which a championship campaign entails. A Celtic Tiger-loving media coterie listened to Cork's corporate speak and found it good. The kind of clichés spouted at early morning breakfast briefings in hotel conference rooms found their way into the sporting lexicon. No higher praise could be offered to a player than the suggestion that he'd probably do very well in business. Because hurling, it seemed, was business by other means.
They have tattooes and dodgy dentistry and grew up on city housing estates
Waterford don't fit into that mould. They are, by and large, unmistakably working class. Their key figures are factory workers and tradesmen. They have tattooes and dodgy dentistry and grew up on city housing estates. And that strikes a chord with the lads all over the country whose working day begins with a jump out of the van at eight in the morning to load up on breakfast rolls, and the others who are getting off shift work at the same time.
There are more of them out there than David McWilliams might have you believe. And the GAA belongs to them no less than to the computer programmer, the bank official, the teacher and the self-employed businessman.
The Decies don't know the marketing department clichés. They're old fashioned that way. They hurl hard, they take their belts, they get on with it. They have no interest in talking up their victories, in persuading the world they've found a new way to approach the game. That's their world and they're happy with it.
Today dawns with Waterford just two steps from heaven. Chances are they won't need any specially minted medals come September. But whatever happens, they've got one title under their belt already; Saviours Of The Hurling Championship.
Go Decies.
