View Full Version : Golf: 2nd major of the year: U.S OPEN. OH BABY

ok it doesnt start for another week, but who cares, it the 2nd major of the year and it's on sky sports!!!!!!!!!!! yahooooooooooo
ahhhhh the u.s open. the organizers if this tournament want to bring to you the best players in the world. they say they dont want to punish the players, but they do. the U.S.G.A love hard course, and they love making them hard.
look at this
http://www.usopen.com/photos/gallery/church_pews/index.html
thats a punishment in it's self
so the players are reading to rock n roll, no matter what the u.s.g.a has done to the course.
after last year's melt down for mickelson, he appears to have come back strong, but the problem here is that he appears to have hurt his wrist, will it be better in time the u.s open???? a lot has changed for mickelson since that horrid finish at the u.s open, but he wasnt t he only one to have a collapse, but his was the messiest. after that heartbreak, he wasnt seen much. a tournament here and ryder cup disaster there. only picking up a half a point, it would have been a big story if it wasnt for the other players simply sucking and the europeans being awesome but after that he vanished, well i think the ryder cup was a bit of a hinderious at the time to be honest. but he vanished. people thought it would take years for him to get over this, and in truth for the first couple of tournaments mickelson didnt look right at all. then came the pebble beach he won, then came a new swing coach, butch harmon and 3 weeks into this wonderful partner ship, a win at the players. gotta give the man credit, he has come back. but we'll see at the u.s open. cause he's got competition, ala tiger woods.
tiger woods on the other hand has a lickle problem in the fact that baby number 1 is due within the next month, they clearly didnt plan this one down at all. but a baby is a baby and it shall be born. but tiger is tiger and he can block these things out. his game is getting there, he didnt have a bad tournament, he got very close to winning on sunday he was only 5 shots behind, but he was never gonna win. tiger will want to prove to the world that his disasterious display at the masters was just a on tournament thing. he's won 3 times this year. Buick Invitational, World Golf Championships-CA Championship, Wachovia Championship. which is fairly impressive, tiger thrives on competition, so the fact that mickelson has teamed up with harmon will have him chomping at the bits, he will want to prove to the world that mickelson is no match for tiger and his mental game.
these two will have thier epic battle and no doupt when this tournament arrives in 2 weeks time, the press are gonna have a field day. but we gotta remember the little guys here as well.
furyk, while he is number 3 in the world he's been consistant, 4 top tens a 2nd and a 3rd, but will he win a major this year, i dont know. he was on fire last year and we still havent seen any fire in him since.
also, retief goosen, although he's currently 11th in the world, outside the top ten in lord only knows how long, i've a feeling, hardly no one is talking about him. it's a hard course to play and this guy trives on the hard courses, shinnecock being one very tough course and he had mickelson down his neck, the whole tournament.
adam scott why for the love of god is this guy in the top 4???? ok, he's won a couple of tournaments, but he's still very much green. he's young yet, he's a bit like garcia who is destined to win a major soon anyway, but the both of them are no quite there yet.
stenson, *sigh* after his masters tournament, i dont have so much confidence in him to win this, but then again he might, i think the british might just be his best bet. after all, he still hasnt worked out the masters green yet and to be honest i should have thought of that, when i put a 30 euro bet on him
harrington, recently won the irish open, so he is on form at the moment. he is our european number 1 player at the moment. and he is due a win in a major and came very close last year, i've just got a feeling he could do it.
donald, casey these two are so good, but when it comes to majors there not quite there yet, but there day will come.
sabbatini is another player who won recently and after his comments about tiger, he might just have to step his game up and prove and that tiger is beatable. but at the moment, he should keep his mouth shut.
the masters champ zach johnson is another person on form, he won the AT&T CLASSIC a couple of weeks back. i would be happy for the guy. just leave the god stuff in church. it's not for the golf course.
these are my stand out players for the moment. to be honest, casey, donald, scott, garcia, furyk and stenson would be my sleepers.
sadly mcginley and clarke didnt get through the qualifiers in surrey last weekend, and to be honest, it's not a surprize, wasnt expecting them to anyway.
so, lets hope for a great u.s open. not only on the course, but off it as well, as i'm sure the papers will be looking for mrs woods and her baby bump

This is probably the hardest major to call in recent times. Mickelson's injury is a problem for him because he'll be going in 'cold'. Usually he plays the week before a major.
I say its hard to call but Tiger will be there or thereabouts. The guy doesn't need to take driver off the tee in any tournament such is the ability throughout his game but as the others will be using driver less also, Tiger has a significant advantage.
The Europeans hav'nt won this event since 1970 I believe. Who do I see breaking the trend? The only 2 for me are Harrington & Donald. Donald isn't a big hitter but his iron play for me is up there with the top 5. Also his temperment appears in good shape. As for Harrington, his play around the greens recently has been top notch from what I've seen. If he can avoid the wild approach shots he has a real chance.
My outsider tip is Sean O'Hair. Led at Sawgrass after 54 holes before the infamous 17th tripped him up. For me that hole dented a very impressive showing & I dont think he'll be affected too much. Also this tournament has thrown up some surprise champions in the shape of Campbell, Jones and even Goosen's 1st success.
Tips for the week, Harrington & O'Hair.

a follow up.
Who's hot, Who's not
WHO'S HOT JIM FURYK A Pittsburgh native, was born to win at Oakmont, where he finished 26th on his US Open debut in '94. A winner at Olympia Fields in 2003 and second at Winged Foot last year, Furyk is the essential US Open player, consistently accurate off the tee and incredibly disciplined mentally.
ZACH JOHNSON
Proved in the Masters that he not only has the game to win Majors but also the composure. Celebrity has been thrust upon him since Augusta with a street being named after him in Cedar Rapids and a day dedicated to him in Iowa. Yet his game and his resolve remain the same.
TIGER WOODS
Simply cannot be left out of the equation. Tiger's phenomenal short game has helped him establish the all-time lowest scoring average (71.26) at the US Open. However, his wayward driving could be a worry at Oakmont.
PÁDRAIG HARRINGTON
He is one of golf's best all-rounders. He's Europe's Furyk, without the quirky swing. After his fifth place at Winged Foot, Harrington has the self-belief to see it through this week. He must putt up to his usual standard on viciously slick and contoured greens he compares to those "in the early days at Stackstown."
WHO'S NOT
PHIL MICKELSON
Has been struggling with a wrist injury. It ruled him out of Memorial and Memphis and limited him to just one practice round so far in US Open week. They say "beware the injured golfer" but Lefty doesn't seem like the kind of guy who copes well with adversity. Played only nine holes in yesterday's practice round
ERNIE ELS
Was crowned Champion at Oakmont in 1994 and at Congressional in '97. He's one of the best all-time in this arena, second only to Woods on the list of only five with a sub-72 US Open average. Yet the 'Big Easy' was bearded by the Tiger and has yet to regain the easy optimism of his youth.
RETIEF GOOSEN
Proved with his second US Open victory at Shinnecock Hills in 2004 that, on his day, he's in a league of his own when it comes to putting on lightning quick greens. Yet from tee to green, his game is not at the same level as it was in '01 at Southern Hills or Shinnecock.
ADAM SCOTT
The 26-year-old is a brilliant prospect. He also showed class when giving up a seat home on a private jet to join fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy for a few beers after Winged Foot. Yet that final round implosion in Memphis last week can't be good for his confidence.

It was 40/1 at Paddy Powers yesterday. Not a hope in hell though imho. Usually 3 under leads after round 1. 1 under after round 2 and 2 or 3 over wins it outright. This is tougher than most us open courses. Last year 4 over won it depends on wind and stuff but wouldn't be surprised if it was around the same this year or ever worse. Keep your money in your pockets about that padraig under par bet. He could feasibly win the us open and you will prob still lose that bet.

 damn it, forgot to do the under par thing, but did put a 10 euro bet each way on harrington. he was at 25/1. tiger was 3/1, stenson was at 40/1

i wouldnt be shocked if mickelson withdrew here. he went from tee to bunker, to rough. to rough by the green. and he could be on his way to making a bogey here. no one would blame him for withdrawing,

Fair play to Cabrera. Almost left it slip in the end but deserved it for his play earlier in the round and especially recovering from a 76 on Saturday!!
Btw, I was amazed to hear that Tiger has still NEVER won a major that he hasn't led going into the last day. I guess the image a lot of us have of Tiger charging through on Sunday to win the majors is a myth. Happened again yesterday. -AmadeusDC-

yeah hes something like 0/29 or something he hasnt lead going into the final round but 12/12 when he has.
fair play to cabrera though, deserved it in the end but was really interesting to hear he was still disappointed even though he had just won his 1st major, happy he had beaten the best golfers in the world but disappointed because the course had beaten him.
was on furyk from the start, certainly got value for money from him but ultimately his 17th hole cost him last night.
