Read recently Webster had to pay £650,000 to Hearts.

He hasn't exactly set the heather alight at Wigan and I very much doubt he's made 650k in the year he's been at Wigan so did it really pay off?

would it not be the case that potential suitors would give him the compensation? either over the table or under it.

What's the point in Wigan signing him then. They could have bought him for the same price, probably even less as he'd only a year left on his contract.

Webster must pay it, I don't think he thought it would cost that much

is the compensation the player has to pay directly related to his value on the transfer market? for example if rooney wanted to invoke the ruling with 2 years left on his contract, would they make him pay his value on the transfer market (eg. £25m)?

the article isn't very forthcoming with details on the ruling, like who decides the compensation etc. i can see this leading to some serious tapping up.

He buys out his contract I imagine. I don't know where the £650k came from though, I very much doubt Webster was on anything near that kind of cash. Maybe FIFA/UEFA attempting to prevent such a rule.
