Experts (read; old Corkonians) say that the outer path of the Lough is 1 mile around.
My little legs have been barrelling around it and I don't reckon it's more than 1 of those kilometer yolks.
Can anyone say for sure?

I used to run around it the odd time, it definitely feels less then a mile anyway. Maybe its because all the swans were keeping me distracted and I did'nt notice the distance. I would seriously doubt its a mile around though.

It's about two thirds of a mile, I've heard, and that feels about right to me.

A council webpage (http://www.corkcorp.ie/news/archive/2004/lights_lough.shtml) declares the outer path to be exactly 1 mile, but I'm not willing to believe that off the cuff.
However, another far more reliable source (http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/flat/flat23.htm), also gives the circumference as 1 mile.
I'm going to have to get a pedometer for my next power-walk around to find out for sure.

It's only a mile if you go anti-clockwise.

1.1 km on the outer path.

Why is this thread in current affairs anyway?
Is it because the Lough is only three quarters of a mile if you run around it with the currents, but over a mile if you run around it against the currents?

Yeah, but how deep is the Lough? I heard a story that 'twas the site of an old castle where the king was holding a banquet for his daughter's wedding but she left the tap running and hence the Lough was created. Tis only a pisheog though.

Eh, I put it in here because the description mentioned infrastructure and I figured that was close enough...
Glimmerman, could this (http://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/celt/flat/flat23.htm) be the story you're referring to? It has the ring of truth to my ears...

If you trace the outer lap of the lough with Google Earth it comes in at .68 of a mile. The inner ring is just under a kilometer.
5 laps of the lough will give you 3 and a half miles.
As a resident of the area, tis a great ol' spot to go for a jog. Ducks are funny :)

That Google Earth feature is dog handy. Good work, mushypeas - you should be a surveyor.

It is not deep at all. I ended up in there one night after a few beers and I could stand all the way out to the island.
