City Theatre Dublin presents an exciting new Irish play by Waterford playwright Alec McAllister based on the life of footballer Roy Keane.
The World Premiere will take place at the Half Moon Theatre Cork on 8th May 2007 at 8.30pm.
So who is Roy Keane? This captivating new play imagines the world as viewed through the eyes of Ireland’s most controversial sports figure. Often humorous, Keane surveys where he’s at with a wry twinkle in his eye. Set during Christmas 2005 just prior to his move to Celtic, this is Keane laid bare - living at the centre of a myth while attempting to deflect the excesses of adulation and hatred. His engaging humanity and his own uncertainty coupled with his wry detachment and brutal self awareness get him through this crucial period in his career while the ghosts of Saipan still haunt ...
Alec McAllister is a native of Waterford who has written for The Sunday Tribune & The Irish Times. He was twice shortlisted for The Hennessy Cognac New Irish Writing Award. This is his first work for theatre.
The pivotal role of ROY KEANE is played by Cork man Myles Horgan - recently seen in the Ken Loach hit movie - THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY. Myles has made the role his own infusing it with the dynamic energy of this enigmatic sportsman, but also instilling a self deprecating humour which belies the stereotypes. Directed By leading Waterford Theatre Director and Author Jim Nolan - “ROY- A footballers tale” is set to become the definitive theatre show about one of Irelands greatest sports figures
