Went to school with a fella for years who supported Everton. We became good buddies and the whole Everton connection made it easier to find common ground etc. Then in the 1996/97 season, the fucker decided he would be a Utd fan from there on. Gave me his Everton top n' all. I felt utterly betrayed. Funnily enough we didnt really get on very well after that. Even his brother who also supports Everton lost the plot with him. I saw him there at the weekend when i was home, I was walking through Mahon Point and there he was with his Utd top on.....the dirty fecker. Nothing against Utd fans, just cant stand turncoats. Does anyone else know a turncoat? lets see how prevelant this problem is.

my cousins used to support Liverpool around the time when United beat them in the '96 Cup Final. One of them is 3 years younger than me the other is 7. During the Treble season 1 started to support United & the other Chelsea. Since then I dont discuss English soccer with them.

I don't remember any turncoats.

I remember a lot of guys who were Liverpool fans who switched off until they won the Champions League a couple of years back. I remember another who supported Newcastle fiercely 10 years ago who doesn't seem to be into football at all now too.

..two brothers of mine, one a bit older, one a bit younger, followed Liverpool and Arsenal respectively from about the ages of about 4 or 5 in the late seventies up to about the ages of 18 or so and then both switched allegiances.
Both had been over to a few matches at Highbury etc and didn't really fancy it. The Liverpool older brother switched to Leeds when they were in division two around about 1989, ..which was a fuckin disaster for me as Liverpool had all those leagues through childhood and then when he switched to a lower league side they got promoted and robbed us of the league in '92!!! ..ha.

The younger one switched from Arsenal, to having Arsenal and Sunderland, and then to just Sunderland for the last ten to fifteen years.

so there you two actual cases of fans downgrading their clubs.

ive followed arsenal since i was 5/6. through the "dark ages".
there was a time i followed cork city more and would pick turners cross or bishopstown over a trip to highbury/watch game on tv.
Ill be a gooner till i die, even if they expired.
I do watch sunderland a lot since keane took them over.
Ill watch anyone. im hoping its an all england champions league final so i wont have to root for any1 as an english club will win it regardless.

Im hardcore arsenal but i did celebrate utds champions league win in 99. I did celebrate the pools win in 2005.

Arsenal fan 1st, footie fan close 2nd.

whats worse, turncoats or those who encourage others to do so?

I'd forgive any primary school kid for changing colours but it tails off fairly rapidly after that. I know a few who followed kind of obscure teams and they'd nearly always have a sort of sneaky "second" team that they seemed to like watching even if they'd never admit it.

The singularly worst thing I've ever heard was a lad who got married there recently and cause her and her family were all dyed in the wool Evertonians, he switched from Liverpool on the quiet. I don't think her lot even know.

Jesus like, I've been in the situation of actual cultural differences before and found myself unwilling to budge cause herself was being a bossy bitch about it. When you see that sort of sycophant about, kind of puts in perspective the sort of eunuchs some men have become these days.

I don't think that's a problem.

I've long combined a support of Chelsea and Cork City and in recent years I've added Feyenoord to the list too. So long as the teams aren't going to come into regular contact with each other, it's not much different from supporting Munster and West Ham.

That doesn't even begin to address the title of the thread.

yes it does

most of the stories in this thread will start with 'i started following 'some english team' when i was 5/6/7/8 and ive never changed cos i'm 'some english team' till i die, but there was this fella in the class and he changed when he was 12 cos 'some other english team' won the treble that year. i mean.. what a loser.. and now he still wears the jersey

how many times had you seen 'your team' or even been in engurland when you were a youngfella? probably never.. therefore how could you possibly pick a team to support other than you father/peer pressure etc making your mind up for you? also, no matter what you claim you can never experience the feeling i had when city won the league vs derry at the cross.. what a night in the shed when OUR team won the league

btw,, i realise there are guys on here who are half spanish/english or whatever but you get my drift

Ehm, Cork also play hurling you know? I've experienced exactly what you describe.

Seeing as I'm from a rabid GAA head family, I essentially have as little in common with Cork City as I do with Manchester Utd. There's intercounty Waterford hurlers I'd have more in common with that Cork City if you want to really stretch it.

Anyway, I seem to remember John Caulfield (fairly sure it was him) explaining that Cork City were "a southside team" and as a northsider they'd never be his team.

That wasn't so many years ago. He seemed to be suggesting it'd be like Man City fans all going and following Utd if City ceased to be.

Thought Rockmount (and the other local sides up that way) would have been the choice of most northsiders? Open to correction obviously.

hold up now.. youre shifting the sticks.. literally! we were talikng soccer a few mins ago

for me the ultimate sporting accolade would be to line out for cork in a hurling all-ireland in front of a packed croker.. nothing else would come close

if you have experienced the gaa thing then i dont need to try explain why utd/liverpool etc couldnt possibly evoke the same emotion in an irishman

I cant boy! I live in Sale and work in Old Trafford. I really couldnt. I have the good fortune to be a complete Everton nut...much to my good lady's lament.

On another note, I was at home over Easter and sat in watching the Makims play Southampton with my dad. Jesus you'd think it was Cork in the All Ireland final. Keano can do no wrong in my dads eyes now, He's a self confessed Liverpool, Utd, Reading, Sunderland fan. In other words he follows any tema with a hint of Irishness/Cork about it. Although funnily enough he draws the line at Celtic.

Followed Man Utd since 1978 and Cork City since their inception in 84.

Unluckily for me...my entire school years never coincided with a Utd title....I was nearly 20 and in my second year in College before we managed to win it in 93....
It was similar back then...the hardcore fans were easy to identify, whatever their allegiance...all the rest seemed to support Liverpool. There will always be that element...the bandwagoners who will attach themselves to a club in the position of eminence at that period of time...some great Liverpool sides back then it has to be said....although I could never admit that at the time to my schoolmates....there was myself and one other fella in the entire Primary school who followed Utd (twas a small school school though)

Mind you the odd cup win through the 80's kept us going.....amazing how important the FA cup once was....even beating Brighton in 83 :)
Best of all was the 85 final...Whiteside's winner...class !!!!!

Mine is practically identical to that

Liverpool ruled but it's made most of the last two decades sweeter

I was a fan of Cork City from their inception but had many years where i didn't go out (The Bishopstown era)

Started going back the odd time about 3 or 4 years ago but work got in the way, but this year i've made a commitment to go to all Friday homes when in Cork

As others have said, i wish more people would try it out and give them a chance, it's great down there

I remember years ago there was some promotion going on with whatever crowd we got our milk delivered from at home - CMP Dairies maybe - where if you collected enough bottle tops or something you could get a kit-bag in your favourite team's colours.

I was really young at the time, maybe about 6, & it was probably before I even realised that there was such a thing as club football. I was mad to get an Ireland one and when I came home one day I found a man utd kit-bag waiting for me, the ireland ones had sold out...I was raging...thinking back that was probably a major factor in me supporting Liverpool!

As much as I dislike Utd now it's still Liverpool first and ABU 2nd, not the other way around like some sad cases you'd come across.

The crux of this arises when your team are playing and beating the opposition will hand the title to your main rivals.

Do you still want your team to win regardless?

If so, you're a proper fan. If not, you're a wah.

I dunno, I think I'd be suspicious of anyone who changed clubs, particularly late in life.

St Peter, then a humble fisherman, is an avid fan of Bethsaida. Around about 8 BC (a Tuesday) he sees his team lose 8-0 at home. Leaving a pub later that night he is confronted by a Golgotha FC fan. Peter is mocked for his support but three times denies he supports Bethsaida. Instead he claims he's a neutral. It is not the only time in his life he will deny someone...

Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre is of PSG's most zealous supporters. Kicked out of the ground, shortly before half-time during a game against Lyon on September 1, 1793 due to possession of a guilliotine, he is enraged. Shaking his powdered wig at a steward he vows revenge. He is refused a refund. On his way home he meets Georges Danton, a Marseilles supporter. They spend the evening drinking absinth. Four days later, in possession of a beastly hangover and a Marseilles shirt, Robespierre unleashes The Terror. By the time it ends 40,000 people are dead.

In August 1939 the Fuhrer, a Rapid Vienna season ticket holder, is spotted in a FK Austria Wien jersey. On September 1 he invades Poland.

I could go on...
The list is long, the evidence irrefutable. Stalwart support of a team is the best indication of a man's character!
