Celebrity election canidates - is it a good idea?

So far we have
Graham Geraghty to contest election for FG
John O Mahony to contest election for FG
Frank McNamara to contest election for PDs
John O Leary for FF

Any word from Dana?

Sean Óg was thinking about running for Sinn Fein before. He'd walk it too I'd say. Its all about an image (first time round anyway) and he's got it all.

He couldnt do it and play club and county hurling at the same time though.

He also considered an offer from Fine Gael. Ideology must count for a lot.

Hardly Celebrities:lol!:

I'd give vote to Seán Óg though, he's a nice guy and that goes for a lot.

I'd prefer to vote for someone who had some vision of how they would like the country and city to look in the future.

Having met a number of the TDs from around Cork, I can say that Danny Wallace, Bernard Allen and John Dennehy are all nice guys, but none would inspire me to vote for them.

I'd actually prefer to vote for someone like Mick Barry who does have an agenda he'd like to see realised (even if I am in no way a Socialist) than someone who is just nice.

Its tempting to vote for personalities but I always go with parties unless I think somebody's a prick. I personally dont like Deirdre Clune for example so I wont vote FG. I'd like to vote for a more left wing government without voting Sinn Fein but Labour seem to have compromised everything.

Mairéad McGuinness who is running for FG in Louth is a celebrity journalist, who used to present 'Ear to the Ground' on the telly.
BTW those rumours about Seán Óg running, were just that, rumours. He never declared any interest in running, but the various parties like to put these rumours around for their own benefit. They clearly think that some people think "Oh if Seán Óg is thinking of running for them, they must be worth voting for!"

There are a few around alright. Tom Parlon and the guy who used to be Wexford Hurling manager are in the Dail.

The current Mayo football manager is a candidate for FG in Mayo.

I suppose Pat Cox started as a celebrity candidate.

There is though a difference between someone who started as a current affairs journalist or in charge of the IFA and someone whose only success is on the sporting field.
