Douglas Golf Club voted last night overwhelmingly in favour of accepting a €171 million deal to move their course to Carr’s Hill from the present site in Douglas/Mahon making way for a massive housing project to be undertaken by Castlelands Developments.
Strangely planning permission has not been granted to rezone the area for housing but Castlelands seem confident they can over turn this. With the views of Douglas Estuary I’d imagine houses on land there would sell at a premium.
Bit of a shame all the green spaces are being soaked up in the city. A similar thing is happening in Bishopstown. If we had a decent public transport system maybe a lot of these developments could take place further outside the city.
As it stands ordinary Corkonians can’t access the land owned by Douglas Golf Course anyway so maybe it doesn’t matter…although I do like when you’re driving along the link and you can see the green up on the hill.
As long as Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael are in power developers will always have the muscle to get what they want.
